This dance is called the Lindy Hop. It started in the African-American communities in Harlem in the late 1920's. It was very popular during the swing era of the late 30's & early 40's. Lindy is a fusion of many dances but is mainly based on jazz, tap, breakaway & Charleston.

They guy in the overalls is Frankie Manning. After he quit dancing in the 50s, he worked more than 30 years at the NY post office. He was "rediscovered" in the 1980s and danced and taught Lindy Hop all over the world until he passed away in 2009 at the age of 95.

I show this to my 5th graders in my music classes when I teach them about swing when I teach a unit on Jazz. They love it! They try to do the Lindy Hop and the Jitterbug

'Hellzapoppin' was a stage show that was all comedy acts and dance troupes doing the most up-to-date stuff for the time. The film version is even crazier, with the film studio including cameo or guest appearances by most of their stars, including 'Frankenstein's monster'. It's well worth finding and watching.

In martial arts movies, often the actors and stunt performers in the combat sequences are fighting at a slower speed than their skills, because the cameras can't keep up and capture their movements and it looks 'unreslistic'. This is similar, my brain has trouble tracking everything that's happening because the speed and precision is phenomenal.

Yep. They didn't have any of the "fancy" recording equipment back then. You really had to get things right the first time or you had to do the whole thing over.

Puts us to total shame to think that our great-grandparents used to do the Lindy Hop! Way to go!

Hellzapoppin was a very special movie. I guess it was the first in "crazy" humour. No really history is told, just short weird stories linked or parallell. Although I am quite exactly double your age (!) this is far before my time, but I have understood that it was an influental movie also on comedy here in Sweden.

Sadly, when some of these movies were shown in the South, these scenes were cut from the movie.

This is real Black Culture, I miss it dearly, not crapping on today's Black Culture music scene and entertainment, but it's just that. It's subpar compared to this

Your video started about 1 minute late and you missed the whole gist of the scene. The white band members left the stage for a break and all the black help(maids, janitors, chefs, maintenance men etc.) took to the stage and one at a time picked up the white peoples instruments and extremely out did the white peoples playing and dancing. All the while the white people saw and watched in amazement from afar. Your video clip missed all that.
