Among the annals of national anthems as a prelude to sporting events, few have topped the one delivered by Whitney Houston before Super Bowl XXV in 1991 in Tampa, Florida. A woman, her incredible voice, and the bare minimum of extraneous notes. Her rendition came at a particularly patriotic time, just after the onset of the Persian Gulf War, and was released as a single. It was re-released after the September 11th terrorist attacks. Houston donated all proceeds to charity. She ranks among the best of all-time because of the circumstances and ... that voice..
This video includes carefully synchronized closed caption (CC) so the audience can learn the words to this song.

Absolute chills. No one will touch this rendition. Not just because she sang with so much power, perfect pitch, great control and placement, but because she told a story. She sang the second verse with such a soft conviction. She didn’t just belt and scream the entire time. She used different areas of her voice to give a nuanced performance of a song that’s been done to hell. Stop comparing people to Whitney’s version. It isn’t fair. This transcends vocal talent. This is pure musicianship and an untouchable talent for understanding the details of the voice and the way one can enhance a story through their style of vocal.

@C 1922 This song was written as it is for a reason. People want to sing along to it. Whitney didnt add anything over the top extra. She didnt make it into an r&b or make it into a vocal show off. She didnt try to change the melody and it was a very smart move. No wonder it is the only version which made the charts and is not only mostly viewed on youtube and is by far considered the best version of the anthem. Thats go show what people want! artists sing to the people and have to think about the people and not about how well they can do the runs and how can I change it up so I can show of my vocals and use the most watched tv broadcast to their advantage.

There was no other version that reached top 10 like Whitney’s. Her version was also made so much money that she donated that to terrorist attack. So if you tell me, Stapleton’s version is only 2nd best after hers. The iconic and successful of Whitney’s version beat any other version. Her voice, her beauty, her smile, her facial expressions, her arms raised up in the air at the end, the orchestra, the jet fly over, I could go on and on. They should replay Whitney's performance before every super bowl. It will never get better then this.

TheBlakmajik78 agreed. But others - especially the 'I-love-so-and-so" and have not ability to listen critically will prefer others' versions. Clearly, they are neither singers, nor people who can see past their own personal preferences. That's why you have such vitriolic responses on sites these days. The under 30 crowd was not around when the REAL singers were singing, so their basis of comparison is pretty poor.
@kungfupandaswagkungfuupeng1392

Mcbrion1951 just because somebody is under 30 does not mean that we were not around for real singers. Luciano Pavarotti is one of the greatest singers of all time and i was around for him and Josh Groban Who has the best male Voice of the 21st century sang the song just as well as Whitney even though she did a phenomenal job. Just because you are older doesn't mean you no more about music either.
@mcbrion1951
@mcbrion1951 8 жыл бұрын
My apologies, Kung. I should have qualified that the people under 30 have not yet discovered music from the forties and fifties. and you're right just because somebody is older doesn't mean they know more about music. however, in my case I was a singer in a band so I do know more about music, although I appreciate and honor that you were absolutely correct that age is no indicator of having more knowledge. I think we can see that in the way our older leaders how are running the country! And most of them are around my age. So you're absolutely right and I shouldn't have generalized. Thank you for calling me on that.. I'll be much more careful about that in the future.
