Barbara, I'm laughing and crying here I'm so happy for you! I think sharing your journey reminded me that it is so easy to trap ourselves in a box of "this is me; this is my style". You discovered that you are so much deeper as an artist and a human being than you've ever realized. Again, through sharing your experience you have passed this valuable lesson on to all of us who love you and your art. Thank you! To everyone who should read this, you also are so much more than you know - we all need to break our own bonds and embrace the freedom of true creativity.

What you described is a wonderful explanation of change. It doesn’t feel good at times, is frustrating, and can be discouraging. I’m so glad you persevered and and had the courage to continue. What an awesome experience you shared with us about enjoying the journey and embracing change! Amazing transformation! I look forward to continuing to follow your creative journey.❤️🥰

I would absolutely love to see you finish this little journal, whether it's a phase, or an evolution, what matters is that it's sparking joy for you. I can feel that joy looking at the work you produced when your creativity was firing on all cylinders, versus the lack of joy from when you were struggling through a transitional phase. Change is hard for all of us, but I think even more so for us creative types, who go through a lot of emotional introspection in those periods of change. Adversity has an amazing way of pushing us beyond our comfort zones, and into breaking new creative barriers - it's a painful journey, but it's always interesting to see where that pain leads.

I've always been a fan of color. My favorite color is the rainbow, I refuse to choose. I've been surprised how much I love your neutral heavy vintage style. Now you're showing that neutral and neon can play together and it is so much fun.

Barbara, I love that you shared your journey from not liking bright colors to suddenly feeling compelled to use bright colors! I do not know how to explain why that story makes me so happy. From watching your videos I have a sense of your style, and I like it. It seems perfect for you. And yet, you have expanded (temporarily?) to include bright colors. Your art inspires me to accept my style and to understand that my style might change over time, and that is okay.

I am so deeply … thrilled … that you made the little colour journal. I nearly wept at the SIX layers of paint you used to cover what you did not like. It broke my heart to see you bury the blue. I started to beg you to stop and just turn the page. Paper is cheap. Art is never perfect. Tomorrow’s eyes will see it different 💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕 I am profoundly delighted and relieved and proud that you have bought neon colours to try out. Promise me you will MAKE MESSY PAPER ON PURPOSE!!! When you are done, turn the page. (Instagram has a messy may prompt-along that is pretty freeing). Yes I want to see more of this journal. And another one after that! 💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕

I love this video. I am so proud of you. As I was watching, I thought Oh no! She is letting her perfectionism rule the day! Then...you decided you wanted to learn different. Just think how much happiness and fun you would have robbed yourself of...if you had continued the former way of thinking. I appreciate that you were able to articulate this lesson to us through the video. You had to admit your hesitancy but blossomed in the end. I love the little grungy colorful journal. Your color mixed beautifully with your style. You did not compromise, you expanded!!! What a great message to all of us in our art journey. Staying the course, no matter what, could lead to burnout of your creative energy. You are renewed and fresh now. I love it!!! Thanks so much.

Hi Barbara, I love your work and your style, and I have watched a lot of your videos, you have inspired me many times, thank you 🤗 I remember once you were decluttering your art space, getting rid of materials you didn't feel were part of your style anymore. I think sometimes we might tend to put ourselves into a box, we are in our comfort zone and don't want to change. something similar to your epiphany happened to me a few months ago. I was using a palette very similar to yours with natural, neutral and muted colours, and sitting next to me my niece (4y.o.) was using all the brightest colours you can imagine at the same time. I liked her palette more than mine, I liked her energy and happiness choosing the colours while I was nervous and stuck. so I started playing with her: we were having so much FUN together. now I don't tell myself what my style is or should be anymore ~ I just use what makes me happy and don't care what others think of my art. I hope you can be happy with your art and your journey🙏 please keep on sharing your experience with us ❤ good luck! ✨⭐️☀️❤️💛💚💙💜🧡💖🌻🌺🌹🍀

Back in the day when I was a serious quilter, everything I did was in pastels. Bright colors did not belong in my stash and primary colors almost made me ill. We had a class one day where the teacher forced FORCED me to use fabric scraps to make a quilt block that were only bright, primary colors. It was so hard, but when finished, I absolutely loved it. My choices after that leaned to batiks. Oh boy do I love batiks - the more colorful the better. Now I'm transferring this colorful side of me to my Junk Journals. It is such a freeing experience and often takes someone else to do the prodding and pushing to discover the real you. Keep an open mind at all times to let that artist out! : P

Color! Coffee dye and color....it can be done. I loved the pop of the pink through the holes. One thing I like to do is paint around focal points, before tearing them out of what ever they are in/on, and then fussy tearing out the focal bits. It helps spread the color used in the journal, or IS the color in the journal. That might work for the inks that need to dry for a long time, do them up and have them ready. Thank you for sharing the experience!

Thank you Ms. Barbara for sharing your experience at the Art Journal Festival. I've not ever attended any workshops. However, watching you document your experiences has encouraged me to "expand my horizons" and discover Who Am I in my creativity. You are an inspiration and your tiny journal came out beautifully. So happy you've decided to incorporate bright colors in your creations. Like spices add flavor to foods, bright colors add just enough "zing" to your journal pages. 🥰😊🧡💚

I have found that I struggle with groups like this also. I can’t work in my regular style. I’m happy that you found a way to finish a journal. It is never a waste of time because it stretches our mind. Great job. Blessings from Canada 🇨🇦

Hello Barbara! Thanks for your video about journal art festival . The mini junk journal, multi-colored, you make is amazing. I lov'it! You are a very talented artist. Keep going with your passion and your style, now, with new colors! Be happy! Thank you for another wonderful inspiration! ❤️🇵🇹

Yes, of course I want to see you finish your gorgeous little journal! That is so awesome that you had a breakthrough at the festival, that this exactly what everyone hopes will happen when they put themselves with other, unfamiliar artists! Many of us have a fear of using colour, it’s like speaking loudly, especially introverts, we don’t like speaking loudly or drawing too much attention with vibrant colours. I think we love colour, we just aren’t confident using it. Glad you had an experience that has had an impact and made it worthwhile!👏🏼👏🏼💕🇨🇦

I love your little journal and would very much enjoy watching you create in it some more. I feel the same way about bright colors! I keep putting those bright bits and papers and paints aside thinking - "well, someday, but not today." I hope that I become inspired by your example to make the leap into brightness and happy colors. By the way, I love the music that is playing during your silent flip throughs.

Barbara: well, well, well! You finally discovered color again. I was waiting for this. Being a lot older than you with more experience, this is part of your artistic growth. I’m so pleased to be a part of watching you grow as an artist. You are a very talented woman and are doing master work already. There is no doubt in my mind, every time I see your videos, that you are destined to leave a legacy of art for the world to enjoy. What a wonderful experience for you. Carol from California

Oh Barbara, all the positive vibes of the festival come back when I watch your video. 🥰 I barely can find words to describe this experience. 🥰 Meeting so many wonderful souls, crafting together with you and trying things that were out of my comfort zone would probably the three things that I will keep in my mind. 🥰 I am so thankful for these days of inspiration, so much fun and friendship. Sending big hugs to all ladies! 🤗

I can't...nothing with neon colours, not even normal (stronger) pinks, yellows etc. I'm an introvert and all my senses get poked 😂 But to see this colours in what others are doing...is like being kid again. Yes, is somehow happiness. So do it, even if is for one week or one year. Is your art, if it makes you happy...this is it. I loved so much the backgrounds, but also the little journal. Can you imagine? Is only one in this universe, yours. Even if you will try to recreate the same one, you wouldn't be able. That's art. In all its variations. So, yes, you are an artist, you better believe it. And is not a betrayal of the vintage part of your art. Just another piece of a puzzle named Barbara, or how we know you, 49dragonflies. (And, a while ago, you purged all that bright colours supplies you had...🙃) ❤❤❤

Oh! Das muss eine tolle Erfahrung gewesen sein! Danke dass Du dein “Abenteuer” mit uns geteilt hast. As an artist you evolve, just as you go through phases in life. We can see that clearly happening here Barbara! I love vintage but these ‘flashy’ colours you’re playing with, are just wonderful. I love love love that booklett and would like to see more of it! Danke Barbara, du hast uns wieder inspiriert 🤗💖✨ 😘😘 aus Belgien ✨🌸

What a fantastic opportunity to grow with your art! Your experiments with vivid color opened a whole new vision for your journals. I will always love your journals, however, with the more muted colors. The museum was magnificent - I can only imagine the wonderful exhibits they must have there. Thank you for sharing your experience and feelings with us!
