Who Are The Dunkers?

During Early Colonial times in America, many immigrants were seeking religious freedom. One conservative group, The Dunkers ( German Baptist’s Brethren) were thankful to William Penn....thus they peacefully settled in Pennsylvania. Years later, migrated to other states.

My ancestors were old order brethren that migrated to Ohio from Pennsylvania and Virginia. Thank you for this video. It's nice to see. :)

Yes, Miami Ohio has a sizable population of Brethren Dunkards/ Old German Baptist that have Eastern Pennsylvania roots. There are 20 common Brethren family surnames..... I’d love to know their name.

@@heritagerelichunters9922 Gauvey, Miller, Kem, Eickoff, Coleman, Rittenhouse, and Gregg. That's some of them on my mom's side. Settled in Montgomery and Preble counties.

@@heritagerelichunters9922 we have a wonderful collection at the Brethren Heritage Center in Brookville, Ohio. It is a treasure trove for the long time German locals. So much information on families it is almost impossible to go through it all. :)

I rented a room in a house from an Old German Baptist Brethren LADY in 1967 in Modesto, CA. Her name was Alice Mae Haney. I remember her inviting me to some outdoor gathering that I remember to be something between a huge picnic and a Church service. I still remember 2 of the hymns they sang. I will always remember them.

My ancestors came exactly on that route, too. Pennsylvania, to the Shenandoah Valley, to Champaign Co. Ohio. Does anyone know what type of German they spoke? It stopped being passed down after WW1.

I’m a fellow dunker. My grandfather followed the religious beliefs. Paternal last name of whipp. We are out of Maryland

Many Brethren Dunkers did move on into Maryland. The most famous meetinghouse is at the Antietam Battlefield

From the late 1800's on, Dunkards splintered into groups with different levels of conservatism. The Progressive and Church of the Brethren are assimilated. The Drunkard Brethren are somewhat conservative, and the German Baptist Brethren (the original name) are still very traditional and plain. A few Brethren groups still use horse and buggies.

Its actually more accurate to refer to the mennonites and amish as denominations vs religion because as a whole they are all a branch of Christianity. There actually is an old order german baptist church in Covington, Ohio and surrounding areas that uses horse and buggy’s.

Your point is well taken. Amish, Mennonites, Hutterites and Dunkards have many varying Orders.... thus lifestyles are often different within each branch.

Hello from Chambersburg, Pa. I was church of brethren myself my whole life, now Mennonite. There is some misinformation of the dunkers here in Franklin County Pa in the beginning of your video. I’d love to chat and give you some more accurate information on our beliefs. Maiden name was Martin ☺️

@@heritagerelichunters9922 same here in IN. I was raised in the Grace Brethren Church in Northern IN. Most of my Family came From PA as Brethren also. We all were trine immersed, observed the Love feast & foot washing etc I enjoyed your video.

We have a plain ogbb meetinghouse that I attend, we still dress in black and white on Sundays with our black hats, and we wear the plain garb as most plain churches today but we are more conservative on it, there are 2 major splits, the old confrence does not have internet (us) and the new conference uses internet, and before you ask I am not a baptized member of the meeting house yet so I have internet I'm a convert

My grandmother's people were dunkers. They were from Illinois. No one has ever heard of them. I was brought up Southern Baptist and converted to Roman Catholic as a young adult after becoming serious about my faith as a teenager.
