Jesus is highly critical of the Scribes and the Pharisees. But of what are these to groups guilty?

Interesting video. This is the first time I have seen this presented with empathy, so that's admirable. The only thing I'd like to say (as an Orthodox Jew) is that while one is certainly free to accept this view of the Pharisees (as being unhelpful to their constituents), this definitely does not accurately portray the Rabbinical approach as recorded in Jewish sources from the same time. The _Pirke Avot_ comes to mind, which is a collection of sayings made by the Pharisees about morals, ethics, and wisdom. To offer just one example, Chapter 1:5 says, _"Yossei the son of Yochanan of Jerusalem would say: Let your home be wide open, and let the poor be members of your household."_ There is a bit of a discrepancy in the record. I would even argue that Jesus may have been influenced by their worldview. Of course Christians believe that Jesus is God (which means that you believe that he is right), so how you deal with the fact that the Pharisees tended towards compassion in contrast to his portrayal is a Christian issue. There are six chapters in the _Pirke Avot,_ and you can read them all here: www.chabad.org/library/article_cdo/aid/2165/jewish/Chapter-One.htm This is a short lecture by an Orthodox Jew (Dr. Abramson) about the identity of the Pharisees, Sadducees, and Zealots: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/o91mhZiUvpbahX0.html

Actually the standard is perfection. We all miss that mark, we all can reach that standard by faith in Jesus death and resurrection. So He is right there is no higher standard ,but we all must believe the gospel. faith in the death and resurrect of Christ saves us. 😇

That burden has become much for me Father. Specifically thoughts like the bulk of the people I know and talk to everyday are likely to go to hell because they are fornicators. Also the thought of the apocalypse is extremely distressing to me. When the gospel was written the world would not have seemed like much of a place to live. Children were lost so frequently, next year your harvest may fail and you would end up either dying of hunger or selling yourself into slavery. Having been to India and seen how chaotic it still is, I realize how much progress humans have made over the centuries. In Christianity, it seems like none of the things we do on earth matter that much.

Jesus also said no one to be called father... Why did you take that title.
@fr.williamnicholas955

Jesus said call no one on earth YOUR father. Then he proceeded to use the same word when he said "that is why a man leaves his FATHER and mother" and later when he says you must "hate your FATHER and mother". So does Jesus contradict himself? If so, he's not much of a Messiah or Son of God, is he! I did not take on the title of YOUR Father. People do not address me as MY Father or THEIR Father. They just call me "Father". The Bible was not written yesterday. It was not written in English, and it was not written by fundamentalists.

And Michas said: Stay with me, and be unto me a father and a priest, and I will give thee every year ten pieces of silver, and a double suit of apparel, and thy victuals. Judges 17, 10 Even if you had ten thousand guardians in Christ, you do not have many fathers, for in Christ Jesus I became your father through the gospel. 1 Corinthians 4, 15 Dr. Scott Hahn tells us that in the Old Testament the priesthood can be divided into two periods: the patriarchal and the Levitical. The patriarchal period is covered in the Book of Genesis while the Levitical period begins in Exodus. These two periods differ significantly. "Patriarchal religion was firmly based on the natural family order, most especially the authority handed down from the father to the son - ideally the firstborn - often in the form of the 'blessing'." (See Genesis 27.) There is no separate priestly institution or caste as there is from the time of Moses, as well as no temple and prescribed sacrifice. "The patriarchs themselves build altars and present offerings at places and at times of their own choosing (See Gen 4:3-4; 8:20-21; 12:7-8). Fathers are empowered as priests by nature." Dr. Hahn continues: "There are vestments associated with the office. When Rebekah took the garments of Esau, her firstborn, and gave them to Jacob, she was symbolically transferring the priestly office (Gen 27:15). We see the same priestly significance, a generation later, in the 'long robe' Jacob gave to his son Joseph" (See Gen 37:3-4). Thus, fatherhood is the original basis for the priesthood. "The very meaning of priesthood goes back to the father of the family - his representative role, spiritual authority, and religious service... priesthood belonged to fathers and their 'blessed' sons." On the other hand, the Levitical priesthood "became a hereditary office reserved to the cultural elite. And the home was no longer the primary place of priesthood and sacrifice." (Signs of Life: 40 Catholic Customs and Their Biblical Roots: Doubleday, 2009). Still, when a Levitical priest comes knocking at Micah's door, he pleads, "Stay with me, and be to me a father and a priest" (Jdgs. 17:10). Thus, when Paul says, "I became your father through the gospel," he is referring to himself as being a priest. The community of believers in Corinth is his sons and daughters and heirs to the kingdom of heaven. Not unlike Paul, his successors in the Catholic Church - through the Sacrament of Holy Orders - are fathers and priests by their role of representing Christ, their spiritual authority, and religious service: the preaching of the gospel and ministration of the sacraments (notably the Sacrament of Holy Eucharist) for the family in the house of God which is the Church.

About Sanhedrin..The Pharisees were the led by the rabbis and Sanhedrin (rabbinical supreme court). The word "Pharisees" comes from the Hebrew word perushim, "separatists." There are various views as to the etymology of this word. One explanation is that they separated themselves from the follies and pleasure of the world. Another is that they were careful to maintain ritual purity, and separated themselves from those who did not strictly observe these laws.The Sadducees rejected the Oral Torah and the leadership of the rabbis. Many of them were rich priests and they took control of the priesthood, sometimes buying their way into the office of High Priest. Those who wanted to befriend the Romans were mostly Sadducees.And Sanhedrin IS BACK!!
