Penn State misses out on Brandon Finney
While most of Penn State's recruiting news has been very good for the last week, head coach James Franklin and his staff suffered a defeat late Tuesday night. Four-star cornerback Brandon Finney from McDonogh committed to Oregon over the Nittany Lions in a very close recruiting battle. We'll discuss how missing Finney is a very clear trend for the team's recruiting efforts in 2025 and what it means for the program.
Host Greg Pickel will give his thoughts on the team's ability to pull regional recruits that become national targets during the show, and we'll give you a list of players left on the board that have the DNA to fix the problem for Penn State.
New NCAA Rules change the fabric of college football
The shackles are coming off of college football staff size after a landmark decision by the NCAA Tuesday night. On3 reporter Pete Nakos confirmed a long-held belief that the governing body would expand college football staff size to include any analyst or coach employed by the university. Now, staff like Penn State legend Dan Connor can provide hands-on instruction for players.
Will this give Penn State an advantage? Who does this help and hurt in the landscape of college football? We'll discuss.
However, the rule changes didn't end there. The NCAA changed portions of the recruiting calendar to reflect the modern realities of college football. In addition to critical losses in the class, Penn State has a unique collection of talent this year that defies recruiting or positional norms. NIL will destroy college football (if the portal doesn't do it first). Even minor league baseball players--who get paid about the same as the value of tuition, room, and board--can't freely transfer to wherever they want to go.

It's also getting to the show. Look how many baseball players on the SEC and ACC teams in the College World Series are from California, the Northeast, even Canada. Small programs are grooming players for the big programs. Would Paul Skenes have been the No. 1 pick at Air Force? No chance.

Just to be clear, the reason that they discuss things the way they do is because they're responsible journalists who don't say anything definitive without hard facts and NIL is intentionally opaque. Also, I'm not chalking up every loss to NIL. I don't think you could say that's the reason Michael Carroll chose Alabama for example. But it IS a factor for some players and some situations. I appreciate your frustration so hopefully I toed the line with a reasonable take here. -- T-Frank

@@bluewhiteillustratedvideo totally get that and respect it, but Penn state has a serious NIL problem and is losing battles because of it, and just omitting it from the report when we lose out on a kid because you can’t comment on specifics feels disingenuous.

It's a symptom of where this program has been. This has always been a big university that thinks small. We're now competing against stupid money. We have to evolve. We have no choice.
