Are you a specialist, generalist, or something else altogether? A designer, musician and entrepreneur who builds his own instruments, Haig Armen demystifies the debate on their value, and through a brief history of instrument creation and an alluring performance with the audience, emphasizes the underestimated value in being a polymath.
Armen's research explores the intersection of design and programming, focusing on data visualization, gestural interfaces and music technology. He works in design-led entrepreneurship and creating new musical instruments using emerging technologies. He has led the Interaction Design Major at Emily Carr University of Art + Design, designed interactive work for CBC, BMW, Chanel & Nokia, and received international design awards including Webby Awards, Prix Italia and Art Director’s Club of New York as a producer of CBC Radio 3′s online magazine. Haig Armen is a Professor and Designer living in Vancouver, Canada. For the last 6 years Haig has lead the Interaction Design Major at Emily Carr University of Art + Design. His research explores the intersection of design and programming, focusing on data visualization, gestural interfaces and music technology. His most recent efforts are in design-led entrepreneurship and creating new musical instruments using emerging technologies.
Haig's background is in music and architecture with an extensive career as a professional musician and composer. Over the past two decades Haig has designed interactive work for prestigious clients like CBC, BMW, Chanel & Nokia. As a producer of CBC Radio 3′s groundbreaking online magazine during 2001-2005, Haig has received international design awards including Webby Awards, Prix Italia and Art Director’s Club of New York. It feels weird, but this video really speaks to me, I thought I was just weird constantly learning and focusing on the same 4-5 things I am interested in, instead of 1 thing specialized on.

A polymath is no title you can give yourself. People call you a polymath. If some persons call themselves a polymath, it's very suspicious.

Not really. Ask a polymath what they do or what have they done? If they are aware of the word, somewhere in the answer will contain "..I am a bit of a polymath". It's short, and easy to understand.

So I enjoyed the beginning a lot and loved his music but because of this it bothers me all the more that he never even answered his intitial question of who the modern polymaths are, so this feels like clickbait to a very unfortunate degree. It should rather have been called something like ‘how dabblers are the drivers of music’s evolution’ or something.

Hi, and thanks for the comment. I'm sorry if it feels like clickbait. I merely ask the question and point to some reasons why Polymaths should be valued. I hope to have a more definitive answer one day.

The only place in American Society where the polymath is celebrated is in the entrepreneurial sector and by individuals (family and friends). Corporate America despises the polymath. I have been a polymath my entire life and I can tell you from personal experience and by axiomatic observation that American Society abhors and discourages the polymath. Think about this, a poly math will never be hired for being a polymath because it takes a polymath to interview a polymath.
