When was the last time you take responsibility for the bad part of the education that you contributed? Well, don’t we all find it easy to point fingers? As an educator, Vongrathayuth came across many interesting things. One of which would be the surprise he has when he knows his students know more than what he teaches. Have we ever taken the time to ask how do children learn all that is not within the context of the textbook? Who has been educating them informally and non-formally? What about the things they know that bug us!? Do we have the right to blame? And more importantly, who to blame? As long as, Lifelong Learning remains a global concept, all stakeholders must be aware of their own influences in shaping the next generation. Who Broke Cambodia's Education? This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Some very good points. The summary of this talks pretty much boils down to the Cambodian education system is so bad that you have no choice but to do your best to help yourself. Teachers can't teach you everything you need to know, as they themselves are still students in one way or another. And in this age of technology that allows learning to be done from anywhere on anything, education should be more than just about being taught by a teacher, but about individuals being curious to learn and take the necessary steps to get that knowledge. Many online teachers are much more knowledgeable than classroom teachers and if you're a learner, you wouldn't limit yourself to just the classroom teachers.

Kudos! Nice speech. Education in Cambodia is tough to reform. But One thing we can do right now, can achieve within a year or two, is to focus on technical training for new technology in the manufacturing sector, for skilled labor, as the world is looking for a new place to produce goods outside of China, see Vietnam as an example. There’s no reason why we can’t train our people in this field for this upcoming opportunity right now.

Well done. Education is so much more than schooling. We must divert the energy we put into criticizing this baby toward nurturing this through any teething problems and nourish it and learn how to make it grow big and strong and worthy. But, also, we must care for it and all its brothers and sisters that are not schools but resources to education, curiosity, imagination, innovation. I have met teachers that care deeply, in state and fee paying schools; I have met teachers that are bitter, twisted angry and negative in state and fee paying schools. Don’t let schooling interfere with education.
