Our very own Pangolin Photo Host, Janine Krayer, joined this year’s line-up of speakers at the 2019 WILDSHOTS Wildlife Photography Symposium in Cape Town.
#wildlifephotography #naturephotography #photography
This video is a recreation of her talk, 'Who Dares Wins', which takes an inspiring look at why you need to take a risk to reap the optimum rewards when photographing in the field.
Janine explains her favourite techniques to employ when the situation, lighting and animal behaviour conspire to make getting an image that much more challenging.
We invite you to learn from the best, and be inspired! Enjoy!
Learn more about Pangolin Photo Safaris ► www.pangolinphoto.com/
Pangolin Photo Safaris operates in the Chobe, Northern Botswana throughout the year.
In our opinion, The Chobe National Park is the best year round wildlife photography destination in Africa - and that’s why we are based here.
All our game activities - on the Chobe River and on land within The Chobe National Park are hosted by the Pangolin Photo Hosts who feature in these films.
Whether you are a seasoned professional or absolute beginner, everyone is welcome at Pangolin Photo Safaris.
Janine is originally from Germany and has been with Pangolin Photo Safaris from 2013 having left the world of high finance for a life of adventure and beautiful imagery in Botswana.
Janine’s passion for wildlife and her keen eye for the finer details of her subjects has transformed her from a “happy snapper” to an award-winning photographer during her time in The Chobe and she now leads several expeditions to other iconic photo destinations further afield throughout the year along with her partner Guts.
Janine’s passion for photography is evident in her teaching style which takes her clients on a creative journey finding the perfect shooting methods that suits their technical and creative attributes.

Your text slides were excellent and beautifully done. The technical narrative was fully attention holding, with tips very appropriate for game drives or water rides. Then, there were those work of art photos. So many of mine superficially resemble yours, and I’m proud of some of them, but yours are beautiful. And, they kept coming for the whole video. It’s hard to get shots like yours but your advice should help folks get better than average results, even when they are there only for a few days. Thank you very much.

This is an excellent presentation that promotes more artistic wildlife photography by breaking out of the often too rigid Nature Photography conventions and “rules”. I very much enjoyed being with you on the Pangolin Hotel photo boat before heading out to the Pangolin Voyager for a five night sojourn. I did some high key photography with elephants and also benefited from taking close in shots of interesting parts of a animal. All too often Nature/Wildlife photography judges insist that the image must show the entire animal or it represents a missed shot.

Great video Janine. 5:05 that leopard image would benefit great for being shot at eye level, to remove much of the busy background directly behind the subject. Even a smaller aperture would deliver a pleasing image from a lower angle. I know this was likely shot from relatively high up in a vehicle so lowering the angle wasn't an option.

Thx for that video. I‘ll get in a low light and perhaps low contrast situation within a view weeks at bear watching in Sweden in forrests and I was afraid about ISo higher than 6400. After that vid I‘ll set the ISO limet to max. Now I‘ve got a idea about photographing as a art image. Lower shutterspeed for moving subjects in low light can help me to get greater images.

Super, thank you so much. Maybe you know the answer. If i want to create a lowkey image, expose to the right on the lightest part and post-process 3 stops under to get the lowkey image, do you know if a jury sees that as a not acceptable process? Thank you in advance, Ed van Loon

Wow 20k is pushing that iso I try stay under 10k I'm ok with. With a focal length between 500-700 mm that's a shutter speed of 1/1000+ I do shoot as low as 1/500 on a tripod but hand held the numbers are really on point up around 1/2000th Any lower and it's really difficult

When light is getting low like magic hour, throw on ND 3 or 6 for the slower shutter speeds 1/10. Practice whip pans on any subject and you will be amazed. Develop in black & white and crank up the contrast. Thks Janine, we always forget the art part with expensive gear, if it's not sharp wtf? Well if your banger is not sharp you fucked up, but don't ever delete that shot.... just change your habits in Lightroom and do some extreme experimentation.... results can often be slightly out of focus award winning images.

I just feel that I lose so much detail when I shoot at high ISO, i.e. 3200 and beyond. The noise just overwhelms the detail at that point.
