In this video we're comparing The Beatles and Siouxsie And The Banshees, and their renditions of Dear Prudence. We really feel that The Beatles will be a hard group to beat, but Siouxsie and company may be up to the task. Of course, we know The Beatles quite well, but we've never heard this one. The Banshees' version we know only ever so slightly more, so not very much. Please tell us who you think did it better. Enjoy!

For me, I adore them both equally. I heard Siouxie in my teens and loved it. Then when I found the White Album, I loved that. It was written for Mia Farrow’s shy sister, Prudence, at one of the India retreats that were popular then ❤ Donovan claims to have taught the Beatles finder-picking there, and the song Sexy Sadie from this album (Beatles) originated there. That’s a whole other story! Thanks for the shout out!

Theres a point during the Nocturne show, where Robert Smith has to retune his guitar between songs, it clearly takes too long for Siouxsie, who turns on him and says something like,"Cant you make it go out of tune any quicker"...he looks as if he wants the earth to open and swallow him whole. Its one of my favourite things ever, your mileage may vary.

Prudence was actually Prudence Farrow, Mia Farrow's sister. Both Farrow sisters were with the Beatles at the Maharishi's ashram in Rishikesh. Prudence wouldn't come out with the rest of the cool kids and socialize or meditate. She stayed in her room, and everybody was worried about her. As far as the audio, this was the first album where they got to use EMI's new 8-track recording console and tape machine at Abbey Road, so they were really indulging themselves in terms of making each track distinct from the other, rather than "bouncing" and combining tracks, like they had to do on Sgt Pepper.

When I first listened to the white album, as a teenager, Dear Prudence was not my favourite track on the album. It was only when I heard Siouxsie's cover 15 or so year's later that I revisited the original. So I like both...as different from each other. The only more extreme 'original and cover don't compare' I can think of is Gloria, Patti Smith vs Them (Van Morrison).

Though Siouxsie And The Banshees did a creditable job and I do like their version, I feel that the original has more warmth and atmosphere, while the cover has a certain cold detachment about it. If you want an original and cover combo where the cover is stylistically very different, try Neil Young's Helpless, covered by Yukihiro Takahashi (of Yellow Magic Orchestra) with joint vocals and guitar by Bill Nelson (of Be Bop Deluxe).

Siouxsie version is solid, but I think they needed to not try to be so faithful to the original. Even the way the syllables of the words are sung. In cases like that, The Beatles' version is always the best. All the 1980s production techniques just make it sound less personal and more manufactured. I like it, but there's no mood to it because it's so synthesized.

Siouxsie's take on "Dear Prudence" was the biggest hit for the band reaching no.3 on the U.K. charts. Julian Lennon liked it & in "Lennon: A Tribute" Sean Ono Lennon even holds up a pic of Siouxsie (from a magazine) while doing his own rendition of the song. Now you should compare The Beatles & Siouxsie's renditions of "Helter Skelter". Siouxsie drops an "F" bomb in her rendition (from the 1978 album "The Scream") & amazingly got away with it.

I'm familiar with both versions and I think the difference is that the Beatles recorded in 1968, but their version wouldn't have been out of place if it was released five years later wheras Siouxsie's version belongs in its time of the mid 80's and doesn't offer anything new. The album track was better than the single version which shows the level of brilliance offered by the White Album.

Agree that the Beatles changed the way albums were recorded, but you're way off suggesting that there's not much difference today. And the Beatles could share that distinction with a lot of figures throughout history; perhaps mentioning Phil Spector, Brian Wilson and Les Paul could balance things out, with a nod to pioneering hip hop artists. The Beatles worked with a great producer and some truly talented engineers like Emerick, Johns and the great Ken Scott. Meanwhile, Brian Wilson was matching or at times exceeding this triumvirate of talent on his own.

This is my #1 favorite song and while I like Siouxsie & the Banshees their version pales next to the Beatles original. On the later one the instrumentation doesn't change and the singing isn't Siouxsie's best effort, not like her earlier cover of 'Helter Skelter' which you should check out. The production on the Beatles' version is excellent, the song ebbs and flows, instruments drop in and out, climaxing with the electric guitar and piano. Paul's bass changes with each verse. The song fades in at the beginning with John's finger-picking and fades out with it at the end, like a cloud touching down and lifting off again, brilliant. Give a listen to the 'Deconstructing Dear Prudence' video to hear the separate instruments. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mtN-Zaed3eC3l40.html

To each his own as to preferences in music. There have been over 100 covers of Dear Prudence, which in itself tells you how loved the original by the Beatles is. What most of the covers do NOT capture is (IMO) a big part of what made the original so great. The sparse acoustic beginning, slowly adding more & more instruments & complexity leading to a crescendo....only to end with a reprise of the simple acoustic guitar.

Not only is the Beatles' original better, but it's more interesting as well. It takes a fairly simple verse-chorus-verse-chorus structure and constantly changes things up with the arrangement to make you pay attention. The Banshees' version is perfectly fine (one of the better Beatles covers, even) but it doesn't have the same build the original does. It kind of starts where the original climaxes, and then proceeds to drone on for its full duration, with Siouxsie drenching the music in (at the time) fashionable echo overload. The Banshees' version is dreamy and somewhat "aggressive", but the Beatles' original is childlike and bouncy. And those are different kinds of magic.

Good cover, but for me it does not come close to The Beatles version. This is one of my favorite songs from The Beatles so it will be very hard to beat from a cover.

Are you kidding me. It’s a masterpiece by the Beatles. Masterful vocals and harmony, guitar riffs that fit perfectly with some unexpected moves,. perfect bass parts, drums right on. A message of love. Takes you away. The essence of what music can do. Soughzie lost the whole essence of the song. It’s not an uptempo rock song. It is a message of love Their vocals don’t compare. The instrumentation is simplistic standard rock style. If the original didn’t exist it would be ok, but it totally misses the mark in comparison to the BEATLES.

I'm a huge Souxie Soux fan and always loved the Banshees, but I have to be honest and say that John, Paul, George and Ringo run away with this song. Purely my opinion but Souxie and the Banshees did this just for chart sales.

Iirc, the band was on tour when the single was released, and didn't know how successful it was until they returned to the UK.

@@Starburst_Candy isn't that the point of singles? And in fact, the entire music business? Didn't you want them to be successful? I'm not seeing the problem here.

@@Sandy-dd4le That depends on whether you want to stick to your principals or be like Adam and the ants and sell out completely. I was there at the punk scene when it was new and fresh, and I watched band after band sell out for the big money. Billy Idol in particular made millions from selling out. Yes that's just business, I know all about that , but sneaking in through the back door never seemed right to me. At least Adam Ant had the audacity to get out there and own it.

@@Starburst_Candy I'd say it was a lucky single, its not as if you could have predicted it from the chart positions of the previous ones, and for the most part the singles after this went back to the previous sales levels/chart positions. It didn't make them a household name or anything.
