This video highlights the essence of the teaching and awakening of Ramana Maharshi. Meeting your physical death is an essential aspect of true Self-inquiry and is contained in the very intimate inquiry; Who dies? A few days before his death Ramana said, "They say that I am dieing, but where will I go? I am Here." My direct experience is this timeless statement of Sri Bhagavan is the absolute Truth. His presence is a visceral experience at Ramana Ashram in Tiruvannammalia India.
The video was originally produced by Premananda and includes a very insightful discussion with David Godman who is a prolific writer on the life and teaching of Ramana Maharshi. David has lived at Ramana Maharshi's Ashram in India for over thirty years. After years of research, interviews with devotees, and the many books he has written, David is considered to be one of the foremost authorities on the Life and Teaching of Sri Bhagavan Ramana Maharshi. The footage of Ramana combined with the perspective of both Premananda and David is powerful transmission of the purity and Grace of Ramana's teaching. The Tao Te Ching says, "He who knows does not speak, he who speaks does not know." It's true, and I believe that most or all of self realization is some sort of inborn intelligence or awareness that cannot be given, measured, or explained. It's a gift.

It isn't true at all. How would seekers become finders if the only people who could teach them were not able to speak about truth, not to mention attempt to lead them out of samsara and show them that they are the light? Plus where would the Upanishads come from?

A gift from whom? It can only be yourself...awareness...The true teacher will guide you with words pointing the intellect toward the source, the Self. The self then takes over [so to speak, because there is and was only the self forever] and the notion I am the doer is destroyed once and for all.

At the beginning, Premananda says that self-inquiry (Atma-vichara) is a "constant remembering" of the Self. Don't interpret this as meaning some sort of actual remembering, which is the thinking activity of remembering an event. Such objective or superficial remembering would do us no good at all. No, self-remembering really means self-abidance, that is, the direct experience of being aware of being aware. This is effortless and natural, and is much more intimate to our Self than mere thinking or remembering could ever be.

"effortless and natural"? hmmm... perhaps for those who belong to the 'one in a million' blessed few, mentioned in the Gita... Gurus would be out of business if it was so...

daisilu, Clearly, you haven't spent much time watching Mooji, Rupert Spira, or the many other nondual teachers who agree that true spirituality must be effortless and natural. Don't assume that just because some religions and teachings make a virtue out of difficulty, that difficulty is the most efficient spiritual path. It is not. And yes, many Gurus who don't understand the role of effortlessness deserve to be out of business, in my opinion. The Gita, along with many other ancient writings, makes it clear that the knowledge of the unlimited and effortless access to the Self is instantly available to everyone. Ramana Maharshi wanted everyone to realize that self-realization was not hard, and did not require any special talents. The proof is not intellectual, but based on your own experience. Just imagine someone asking you the question, "are you aware of being aware"? You might pause for a few seconds, scanning your current experience, but then seeing your own awareness you would reply "yes". If we are alive and awake, we are aware. It's that simple. From such a humble beginning many people have "dived within" to discover the fullness of their own pure consciousness, experienced with no obstacle whatsoever. You can find dozens of such self-realized people offering their own take on how it can be done effortlessly right here on KZfaq. For those who feel they need a technique, my nonprofit organization Natural Stress Relief (NSR) distributes an inexpensive course that will teach you how to experience the fourth state of consciousness (as described in the Bhagavad Gita and elsewhere) reliably, in three days. I have never known a sincere client to fail. And for those who feel that it is wrong to charge money for office expenses and such (I don't take a salary), just listen to nondual teachers here on KZfaq for free, and discover infinity within, one experience at a time. Just search for videos by Rupert Spira and Mooji to start, and then find the teacher you enjoy and relate to most.

i just flagged something in your statement that is obviously not true, considering the world around us [well, at least around me; perhaps you live in a different one...]. But if you considered necessary to respond this way then let me ask you some things from what you wrote: yes, true- i don't spend much time watching those you mention; do you? why? can you find the Self in youtube talks/chat or reading in books? You said it- "The proof is not intellectual, but based on your own experience." so how can you be in two places at once- on youtube and in yourself [unless you imply that youtube is part of the experience of self discovery...] David was heard quoting the Gita about 'one in a million' that truly makes it...; realizing the Self and "the knowledge of the unlimited and effortless access to the Self is instantly available to everyone" are two different things, aren't they? Just look around- how many people do you see interested in tapping into the the great offer of 'accessing the Self instantly, free of effort and unlimited'? Watch videos, find a youtube teacher, a technique, buy a course [yeah, inexpensive...]?! By making this recommendations you contradict your statement of 'effortless and natural', don't you see? Why would i need all those things if 'the infinity within' is so easily accessible?

The self is ALWAYS experienced because the self is all there is, even when you do not know that life is awareness the self. Many thousands of people know they are the self i.e are 'fully enlightened'. Ramana had a very pure mind and that is why he was so beautiful. Enlightenment is only the knowledge and conviction that the I is awareness. To say freedom/enlightenment is very, very rare is not only off putting but it is patently untrue. Out of billions of humans only a few will realize limitlessness i.e hundreds of thousands, not 10! There is a teaching tradition called Vedanta pramana that sets many, many people free each year.

There has not been one since Baghwan who has emanated Christ consciousness down to every nook and cranny of his existence. There have been teachers, workers of miracles and perhaps even those who have attained to the state he was in. However much many have tried to scoff and argue, Baghwan Maharshi's truth will stir the milk of the ego in such a way as to cause a boiling over effect into unfortunate renderings. For those who sense his truth, it is to remember that words themselves are only a manifestation of fear...

whether by effort or by mere one-time glimpse the process of complete One-pointedness of mind which naturally happens in deepsleep without consistent awareness (may be due attachment or objective ideology in waking state) should happen. patience, tolerance n faith in Guru is all that is needed while sitting in meditation daily for three hours at one stretch. 3 hrs is minimum.

Kieran Wilson Extremely misleading and this is the danger of listening to these people complicating the simplicity of the instruction by adding in their own half-baked ideas. The idea of a mind needing to be 'stilled through so-called spiritual practice for Self-enquiry to function well', as the character recommends at 1:40, is completely and utterly incorrect. The whole purpose of Self-enquiry is to discover there is no mind, there is no thought, nothing other than Self-enquiry is required. What would be the point of Self-enquiry if this mind was already still and no thoughts to enquire into and who exactly is this one who is supposed to be stilling the mind ??

+Cee Pee Phew, I'm exhausted just reading that !! Seriously though, I could be 10,000% sure but that makes no difference to you. If you are doing all this meditation practice, breath control or whatever, yet still have not discovered who you really are then dump the lot of it, it's of no value to you. Ramana's teaching is extremely simple, so simple and so clear that it seems too good to be true. So what do we do ? We meditate and do all manner of silly things in the hope that sparks will fly yet Ramana's simple instruction is to ask the equally simple question, Who am I ? Nothing particularly subtle about that at all. Ramana really never advocated 'spiritual practices', he recommended an investigation into your true nature, through Self-enquiry. Find out who you really are, that's all, end of story. Very very few will do this earnesly, even Ramana himself said as much, that very few who ever came to him were genuinely interested in Self-enquiry. Self-enquiry will become spontaneous if you are serious and the subtlety will come. Start by asking yourself who this one is who thinks he/she is meditating. Do this and listen to no one, not even me, this is 'Self-enquiry and requires very little from anyone. Dump everything I tell you too, it's meaningless chatter.
@cspace1234nz
@cspace1234nz 8 жыл бұрын
+Cee Pee Combine it with whatever you want, it's irrelevant. If you like sitting, sit, if you like to walk in a forest, build buildings, run around on a sports field, sell cars or climb trees. doesn't matter, you will do whatever you do no matter what, what 'happens' simply happens, none of it is relevant to either Self-enquiry or Self-realisation, no matter how much you try to convince yourself it is. And what is this business about a still mind ? A still mind is just another trick of the mind, one you will waste all your time and energy on, yet again, has nothing to do with Self-realisation. Sure, meditate if you wish but don't ever think for a moment it will give you what you think you want, I know untold people who have been meditating for 20, 30, even 50 years who still have not realised their True Self. If you like it that's great, you will do it, it's certainly good for health and well-being, but you should never kid yourself for a moment that any of it is useful at all for finding out who or what you really are. I know this is what different ones teach, but they are usually cashing in one way or other, not so credible. Ask yourself who it is who enjoys meditation and who it is who wants to know why it's not necessary. This is Self-enquiry. Who is it who has come up with this idea of 'enlightenment' ? What is enlightenment anyway, who would be enlightened if there was such a thing ? All these ideas are nothing but ideas you've picked up along the way and the surest way to get stuck is to give them value where there is none. Just find out who you are....'Who am I ??'
@cspace1234nz
@cspace1234nz 8 жыл бұрын
+Cee Pee What's a meaningless activity. who is to say ? I would say meditation is a meaningless activity, even though I too meditate and have done so for 25 years, I like it, but I like a lot of things, has nothing whatsoever to do with Self-realisation. Activity, life, is simply happening, it carries on regardless, who is it that would think they have any choice in these matters anyway, who is that one ? Find out.
@cspace1234nz
@cspace1234nz 8 жыл бұрын
+Cee Pee This is all just mental chatter, it's all meaningless. All this talk of mindfulness and meditation is of no value when it comes to Self-realisation and the nature of Reality. What do these things even mean other than being constantly changing ideas about something you imagine ? Where did you even pick up these silly ideas anyway ?? The thing is, if you are comfortable with what you're doing and all you really want is a 'better life' and feel you are where you need to be then stick with that and be happy, I mean, you could work up to 12 hours per day of meditation and even more of this mindfulness, practice pranayama four times every day and read more books, there is so much more you could do. Visit Arunachala, sit in Virupaksha Cave all day, do pradakshina. Ok so I'm joking, but this is what people do, they get very busy being all 'spiritual' and end up looking good and smelling good, and hey, if all you do really want is a better life then that will probably help, yet Ramana never recommended any of this for a genuine seeker of Truth, his instruction was extremely simple, that of Self enquiry, anywhere, any time, nothing special required. You don't have to sit in lotus, you don't have to sit at all, none of this physical stuff is relevant, simply ask 'Who am I ?' and follow that 'I' thought back to it's source. Search in the mind by quest of "who am I?" And this way reach the Heart. That moment come, The ego will fall down and in it's place The one 'I-I' will instantly appear. Yet this is not the ego but is found To be the blazing of the Absolute. RM It's that simple, nothing more is required.

Just what is self-inquiry? To me this sounds like an empty phrase. How can one inquire after the unfathomable self? One can inquire the answer to a history or philosophy question, but what is the meaning of self-inquiry?
@empathybringspeace5604
@empathybringspeace5604 8 жыл бұрын
Tom Blicharski Self Inquiry should not be mistaken as a philosophical question but a method based on awareness practice in which the practitioner is engaged in observing the ego mind which arises as thoughts, feelings, emotions, concepts, etc. This method of constant observation=self inquiry of ego self will lead to transcendence of ego mind and revealing substratum layer of ego mind called Consciousness because it is conscious of the whole psychological fabric of ego mind. This Consciousness is also referred to as big self or self beyond the ego I, or I-I. Please note the observer who initiates this process or observer who is engaged in the process of self inquiry is also transcended in the end because observer is in the domain of the ego. Ramana Maharishi has explained this by saying observer is like a piece of wood who burns all other pieces of wood (meaning thoughts etc), like in a burning pyre and finally even that piece of wood the observer is burned or dissolved in the pyre or process of self inquiry.Thus the observer or practitioner of self inquiry never reaches the truth of Consciousness but dissolves into the state of Consciousness. This practice is very similar to Buddhist practice of observing the mind in which the observer is also transcended. Krishna murti has said this beautifully, Consciousness is revealed "when observer becomes the Observed." Please also note Consciousness is second layer of mind. ego being first. Hinduism stops at Consciousness the second layer of mind while Buddhism goes further into Revealing Essence of mind which is called Shunyata=Emptyness or great Void and even further by revealing Nature of Mind which is Wakefulness=Buddhahood. Note the terms that are used Essence of mind and Nature of mind. Essence of mind is Shunyata. Nature of mind is wakefulness which is a chapter of teaching found in Dzogchen a chapter of teachings found in Nymgmapa Tibetan Buddhist teachings. Hope this is helpful. The journey needs to start with mindfulness or being in the now prior to initiating observation of self or ego mind. Groundwork for this journey is mindfulness.

The Right Arm of Hell After the first vision, Jesus and I went to a different part of hell. Jesus said, “These things you are seeing are the end times.” Another vision appeared before me. Jesus said, “We are in the right arm of hell.” We walked up a high, dry hill. At the top of the hill, I looked below and saw a swirling river. There were no pits of fire or demons or evil spirits, only the large river flowing between unseen banks. The banks of river were hidden in the darkness. Jesus and I walked closer to the river, and I saw that it was full of blood and fire. As I looked closer, I saw souls, each chained to another. The weight of the chains dragged them under the surface of the lake of fire. The souls in hell were in the fire of hell. I saw also that they were in the form of skeletons with misty-grey souls. “What is this?” I asked the Lord. “These are souls of the unbelievers and the ungodly. These were lovers of their own flesh more than lovers of God. They were men loving men, and women loving women, who would not repent and be saved from their sin. They enjoyed their life of sin and spurned My Salvation.” I stood beside Jesus and looked into the lake of fire. The fire began to roar like a great furnace, moving and devouring everything in its path. Soon it filled nearly the entire right of hell. The fire approached to within feet of us, but did not touch us. The river was burning everything in its path. I watched Jesus’ face, and it was sad and tender. He still had love and compassion for these lost souls written on His countenance. I began to cry and wished I could leave this place of torment, to go on was almost unbearable. I looked again at the souls in the fire. They were a fiery red, and their bones were fiery red, too. I heard their souls cry out in regret and sorrow. The Lord said, “This is their torment. Chain after chain, they are linked together. These desired the flesh of their own kind, men with men, and women with women, doing that which is unnatural. They led many young girls and young boys into acts of sin. They called it love, but in the end it was sin and death. “I know that many boys and girls, men and women were forced against their will to commit such atrocious acts-I know and will not hold this sin to their charge. Remember this tough,” said Jesus, “I know all things, and the persons who made these youths to sin have the greater punishment. I will judge righteously. To the sinner I say, ‘Repent, and I will have mercy. Call on Me and I will hear.’ “Time after time I called to these souls to repent and come unto Me. I would have forgiven them and cleansed them; and in My name they could have been set free. But they would not listen to Me. They wanted the lust of the flesh more than the love of the living God. Because I am holy, you must be holy. Touch not the unclean thing, and I will receive you.” said the Lord. I felt very sick as I looked at the souls in the lake of fire. “If only they had turned to Me before it was too late,” Jesus continued. “My Blood was shed so that everyone could come to Me. I gave My life that even the vilest of sinners might live.” Multitudes of souls went by in the river of flames. Over and under the waves of fire, they went, with no way out of burning in the lake of fire. I heard cries of regret as the bloody river flowed by us. We walked up a trail beside the river. In front of us, sitting on a hill, was a large woman. She swayed back and forth as though she was drunk. Written on her were the words, “Mystery Babylon.” I now knew the mother of abominations on the earth came from hell. An evil, powerful force emanated from her. I saw multitudes, peoples and tongues beneath her. She had seven heads and ten horns. In her was found the blood of the prophets, the saints and all that were slain upon the earth. “Come out from her and be separate,” said the Lord. “In her time she shall be destroyed.” We walked on past the evil woman with the horns on her head. Everything began to get dark. Now Jesus was the only light. We walked until we came to another hillside. In the distance I could see hot flames in the air. The atmosphere became oppressively hot. We went around the hill and came to a large door with slots cut in it. It was set into the side of the hill. A large chain was on the door, and flames raged from it. The door was also bolted with large locks. I wondered what it all meant. Jesus said to me, “Behind this doorway is the bottomless pit.” All at once, the dark figure of a man, attired in a long, dark cape, appeared in front of the door. His face looked to be very old and very tired. The skin of his face was pulled tightly against the bones of his skull. He looked to be a thousand years old. The flames behind the door reached higher until the door bulged from the pressure of the heat. “Dear Lord,” I said, “I’ll be glad when Satan is cast into the bottomless pit and all these evil things stop.” Jesus replied, “Come, hear what the Spirit is saying to the churches. The end is near, and I am calling sinners to repent and be saved.” Watch for the sign in Hollywood Genesis 19 Divine Revelation of Hell Mary K Baxter
