Ever find yourself blurting things better kept to yourself? Visualizing multiple options for the future, or possible consequences? Planning details or solving problems? If so, you’re not alone.
Anne wants to live in a world where all people are recognized for their inherent value. As the Director of Lone Star’s new OLS® (Occupational & Life Skills) associate degree for adults with cognitive disabilities, Anne is able to turn her dream of that kind of world into reality, one student at a time. When she is not at work, you can find her enjoying the outdoors, walking, jogging, reading, and spending time with her grandchildren. Her latest project is learning to play tennis. She spends evenings and weekends hanging out at the courts with a bag full of tennis balls, serving to invisible players on the other side of the net.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

I approve of encouraging neurotypical people to gain a better understanding of executive dysfunction, but this is presented in a way that would arm those very common people who have concluded we're exaggerating "normal" problems to get attention, or to slack off. The same people who would push us straight over the brink of sanity claiming all the while they were only trying to help.

Debilitating mental disorders are not simple or easy to understand and treat. They produce on average 2-3 other co-morbid disorders. You're now dealing with a patient who has Aspergers, Depression, Social Anxiety, GAD and or ticks. These area all very common disorders that manifest in a unhealthy childhood brain as a result of a Primary disorder that doesn't get treated at a young age. Were learning now that ADHD and Aspergers are actually really common to have together, so have fun with that. Also make sure to just simply get over these disorders like she said in the video.

"When they are under stress"....what could be more stressful than being considered defective in school? The commonality seems to be slow processing. Processing like an accomplished artist, a perfectionist engineer, an inventor, an entrepreneur, a writer...I know IRL people who fit THOSE labels who were seen as "slow" in school. So many kids are labelled it is hard to escape the "othering" that schools do. Acceptance would be accommodation---we don't ask a blind child to "just look"--we find other ways for them. Woe to those who don't fit the mold.

I think the point was that we should be able to have empathy and understanding for people with executive dysfunction problems because they are a more extreme version of what everyone goes through at times.

She is basically saying that people with depression are just like me because I’ve seen a few sad movies. She is dumbing down the effects of EFD and comparing it to that one time she had an awkward conversation or that one time she didn’t finish a project. With EFD, that happens every time a project is assigned, or every conversation that they’re apart of. She just does not get it

I'm relieved to hear someone else say what I was thinking. Very unfortunate that this video is titled such that it appears when searching for help with EFD.

Matt Komaroski no, she’s not. She’s saying that you don’t have to have a disorder to struggle with executive functioning.

Hi everybody ,just wanted to give you my opinion. With menopause your executive functions start to decay and you can actually feel it while it's happening , kind of scary. Anxiety starts to kick in and it does a lot of damage too. It's a cocktail of adhd and hfa. Not fun at all. This is my experience

This talk aims to help people without executive function issues understand executive functioning and what happens when it is impaired. She uses chronic stress to illustrate what executive function impairment looks like to a limited extent. Her message would be better communicated if she had addressed the definitions with clearer examples, as well as the difference in severity between neurotypical brains and brains with executive function impairment.

I've been attempting the same thing and I came to conclusion that I need to find a term that better specifies this than "executive function." I don't have any problem with working memory, being distracted or even being disorganized. I have to gather immense willpower to even perform routine tasks like brushing teeth. I don't know if this falls under the term "depression" and I've been hoping to find people who struggle with something similar.

@@lidu6363 I'm struggling with the exact same thing and I was hoping this would be a good resource... did you end up finding anything else worth mentioning? It's such a struggle to find resources for EFD, especially if you have a severe case of it which it sounds like we both have. It's exhausting wanting to shower or eat or brush my teeth and being physically incapable of just...doing it.

@lidu very similar... accept i do have the disorganized thing... i want to, i can envision it but my brain takes over and i freeze. so i think it's brain issue and depression... maybe me not being able to create my life is what is causing the depression.

@Jenna i did a year course in DBT that helped, but now currently looking for therapist that specialize in ex function because no matter how much therapy i get if i can't get my actual day to day calendar, life building skills, work flow then i'm staying depressed... it's cycle i'm determined to break... i'm focusing on getting support to be able to follow through on "actions" repeatedly to create positive "habits" and by pass the whole thing! i want the "genius" part of all this to flourish and not be controlled by the negative influence this struggle has on my life.

It doesn't requite disability to have impaired executive functions , BUT if someone has these functions impaired for the majority of time, you can hardly say that he is under stress all the time . I dont really understand the point of this lecture.

I disagree with a lot of the people in the comment section. If you don't suffer from a disability, but suffer from mental health issues, you will know that executive functioning disorder affects you significantly, which is why I am glad that the video addressed this.

She should live with a house full of seriously handicapped Aspies for a month; who can't sleep, can't work, can't stop talking about their special interests, have such severe sensory issues that they can't be in the same room as anyone else, can only achieve one task a day....and so on and so on. That'll shut her up.

People with autism have much more debilitating difficulties with executive dysfunction than people with a normal brain. This video runs the risk of diminishing this, which is very bad.

Ellen Jamieson I agree. Or people who have bipolar disorder or something like that.
@DeladisKythera
@DeladisKythera 7 жыл бұрын
I don't know about Bipolar and Executive Dysfunction; bipolar is primarily classified as a mood disorder, whereas autism is closer to a learning disability/pervasive developmental disorder. I can only speak for myself as someone who has autism. It took me years to learn basic planning and daily organisational skills that most non-autistics take for granted.

Ellen Jamieson It effects people with ADHD and dislexia too.
@DeladisKythera
@DeladisKythera 7 жыл бұрын
YES, I am well aware of this Terec. The simple bracket of ''Autism'' covers a variety of disorders, such as ADHD, Tourettes, OCD, Sensory Processing Disorder, Dyspraxia and so on. I am not certain however that people with basic Dyslexia have the same pervasive problems with organising, planning, prioritising and executing tasks as those with actual autism; I do not think that is true. I have an autism diagnosis, and I have mixed in with that sensory processing disorder, the usual problems with executive dysfunction & social impairments, and OCD/high anxiety. I displayed Tourettes-like problems in my teens. My brother, who has the same genes, has Dyslexia. He has none of the other issues that I have. There may be crossovers, but they are not exactly the same. I was originally merely taking issue with the blanket statement that ''everyone has executive dysfunctioning problems'', which is deeply insulting to those who are so seriously impaired in this area so that they cannot have a normal life (possibly never). There needs to be clarity of categories here.

Aspergers/autistic person who can "pass" really well(though for a really whacky NT person, not really that normal haha) here. Watching this video I thought exactly the same as you, the problem with getting non-disabled people to compare small struggles in their lives with disabilities of different kinds is that they could easily jump to saying we should just "get over it". Which is deeply hurtful when for something like executive functioning it already feels like you can't make any excuses because people take it for granted. It's like the studies which showed that short periods of having abled people go through simulations of disabled life can actually be harmful towards disabled people and promote ableism. The very fact of living with something in your day to day life is what makes it so hard for abled people to understand, so until we can simulate for them the experience of living in a society which doesn't accommodate your needs any other such comparisons are unlikely to help anyone disabled.
