I remember having this conversation with a buddy of mine when Angels and Airwaves formed. Really enjoyed their stuff but haven't listened to any of these guys in years, gonna have to reeexplore these guys. Great video to get a discussion going, never seen this channel before but really enjoyed the format, you earned a sub from me guys!

I just listened to most of Alkaline Trio’s latest album. That was my first time intentionally going out of my way to hear them, other than not realizing that they play ‘X’ song. While I could not get into the album, I agree with you. Matt being part of Blink got me curious about Alkaline Trio where I very likely would not have if he was not part of Blink. Matt’s cross pollination has given both bands more exposure.

I'm bummed I'll miss this live discussion, but alas I am teaching the youths art. I'll catch the replay. I think Skiba is by far a better artist and I personally connect a lot more with him, loved Blink 1-80- trio for what it was but happy everyone is back home respectively

Absolutely love your content!! Daily watcher and enjoyed your review of the new Green Day and Alkaline Trio albums! I completely agree, Matt Skiba to me has always been a better songwriter. There’s actually an old interview of Tom saying that he learned a lot from watching Alkaline Trio on warped tour and it inspired him to become a better song writer. 🤘

Gonna have a Sun (weekly Stream), Wed (the podcast w Rob) & Fri regular video drops (underground artist spotlight). And then of course whatever else I can come up with on Mon, Tue, and Thu with more documentary style vids, podcast guests, and album reviews. Really trying to make this a destination spot for the whole punk rock community

For me, Tom is the better song writer. But I also love AVA, and The Adventure is one of my Mount Rushmore songs for sure. Voyeur is also great tho lmao.

I'm a fan of both bands but so much more for alkaline trio. But when it comes to alkaline trio, dan Andriano is an absolute power house. My all time favorite living musician. So to compare the two bands equally you have to consider all members. Dan is so much superior to mark that there's absolutely so contest in my opinion. Matt came through for blink when they needed him to perform but for me it was weird, like watching your grandparents make out.

Tom’s voice was awesome before auto tune. Matt Skiba has a great voice that he possibly tore. Id rather listen to Matt Skiba live over Tom Delonge.

Depends on what’s being talked about. Who is the better player in Blink? Tom. Who’s the better player in Alk3? Matt. Who is the better guitar player? Matt. Who is the better musician? Matt. Who is the better songwriter? Tom. Who has the better voice? Both are great, except for the times when Tom didn’t really care.

I'd take any music Matt Skiba makes over Tom Delonge's music any time any day... but Tom was probably better at being in Blink 182. But I don't like Blink that much anyway 🤷🏻♂️

I think California & California Deluxe was okay. But it seemed very lazy at times. Between the original release and the deluxe version, there are about 7 or 8 tracks that have almost exactly the same intro riff. Overloaded with “nanana’s” and “woahh’s”. I just couldn’t take to it. It wasn’t an awful album, but it’s not something I’d place above anything Tom has ever been a part of.

You could take California Deluxe, cut it down to 12 tracks, and get a solid album.

Yeah the songs on the deluxe version are some fantastic songs. I still listen to last train home. California is a great album.

7:00 I don't think we'll ever know exactly how much Matt contributed to the writing of California or Nine. John Feldmann was a writer and the songs sounded like he was the main writer. I don't think Matt contributed much. It doesn't sound like him at all. Which is why they went to John in the first place.

I don't think we claimed Matt wrote a bunch of anything, did we? I never thought he had a huge part in writing any of those albums, if he did they'd be better I'd imagine

Blink Matt Era is about 10x better than the recent Blink Tom album. It just sounds way better and more enjoyable to listen to.

The latest Blink record sounds incredibly "forced". There's a spark that's missing. Tom sounds like he's trying desperately to fit back into the dynamic and trying too hard to "please" everyone, not only his bandmates but also fans that expect a certain sound. Me? My favourite version of Blink is the Blink that pushes the boundaries of who they are supposed to be creatively. Self Titled and Neighborhoods are the only Blink records I can revisit at any age and still love. Sure, the early stuff scratches the nostalgia itch. But songs like Asthenia, Stockholm, After Midnight or Ghost on The Dance Floor are absolutely timeless. At 30+ years of age, I don't need to be hearing boppy tunes about going to parties and making out with chicks, I want to see growth bundled up in melodies of raw emotion that I can actually relate to. Whatever Blink is doing on One More Time, whether it's trying to recapture a sense of youth, or appeal to a wider more mainstream audience, it's lost on me. I want these guys to get into a studio together and really push themselves beyond who they think they are, beyond who the mainstream audiences want them to be. Because that is where that "spark" happens. That is where greatness happens.

I am a huuuuuuge Matt Skiba fan and I love that man so much. I personally prefer his older voice (Good Mourning specifically is my favorite vocal performance from him) but I think he's better vocally overall than Tom. I do like Toms style of singing but it's not the best I've ever heard in that same style. Also Trio has the better lyrics for sure, way better than anything I've heard from Blink. I think Matt is a brilliant lyricist. I have a Trio tattoo with some lyrics from Bleeder because they mean so much to me, his words really speak to me. I like Tom and I do believe he's talented but he's no where near as talented as Matt. In my opinion hahaha

I also thought Mark was cooler then Tom, but when Mark is by himself, I don't like his music. I noticed Mark likes to repeat a hook over, and over, and over, and it drives me crazy.

i feel like in terms of writing, there is no correct answer. matt skiba is a better lyricist and the quality of the words he writes are incredible. however, tom is incredible at writing catchy songs and melodies that'll get trapped in your head, but his lyrics aren't as well thought out. so the answer to that question really depends on what you'd classify as good writing: something catchy or something meaningful?

I mean, Matt is superior in both categories. Flat out better lyricist and I think A3 songs are better musically by 5 miles. Even based on what Tom says about his own writing and Matt's influence on him. Of course a lot of this is just opinion, lol

Matt is such a better singer and Tom delonge can’t hold a note to save his life his voice is trash he uses auto tune live and on the record don’t like the auto tune and don’t like him as a front man he doesn’t jump or interact with the crowd

@@thepunkrockreview who Tom delonge is better live then Billie joe Armstrong no way in hell Billie Joe is the superior out of all three of them the energy he brings to concerts and he’s 51 and he still jumps and is such a entertainer and he doesn’t use auto tune live on his voice or in studio plus Billie joe is an amazing songwriter in my opinion he’s the best out of all three but Tom is definitely at the bottom and skiba in the middle I feel like I’m making valid points
