Corwin and Julia go head-to-head in the latest World Junior debate about Canada's biggest World Junior rival. Russia won a lot in the past, but Team USA has recently become a powerhouse. Who do you think is Canada's biggest World Junior rival?

@@deebzfiremanable The NHL started going to the Olympics in 1998. Canada would have destroyed everyone before considering the best players in the league were Canadian in the 70's and 80's . Every country would have been basically useless in those times and its actually prob a good thing that the NHL didn't go because it would have made hockey look bad on the international scene considering only Canada was really good. The only competition back then for Canada would have been the USSR. She's not wrong about the USA being irrelevant before the 2000s in hockey

Hypothetical situation: Canada and Russia are playing in the gold medal game. Who are you cheering for?
@danreed2189
@danreed2189 3 жыл бұрын
If you asked the Canadian Junior players, "who would you rather beat, Russia or the US?" They would unanimously tell you, the US. Canadian kids (and adults) love to beat on the country they are closest to and most often linked to. Every Canadian I know (and I grew up in Calgary) hates to be thought of as "just like Americans." Hates it, and rightfully so. So they fight that "little brother" status with all their might. Some to the point of hate (I once had a job when I was in high school where a guy would not work with me when he found out I was American. That attitude, of course, is the exception, I loved growing up there). Also, to some extent, familiarity breeds contempt. That only works one way, though, because though most Canadians know a lot about the US, most Americans don't know diddly about Canada, and for the most part, they don't care. That attitude (fair or not) is insulting to many Canadians. Now Canada has always been THE hockey country in the world. Canadians for the most part, love hockey. Many of them identify with it. They consider it "their sport." So, beating the US in anything is always nice, but it is essential for hockey. Thus, the rivalry and it works both ways. Because Canada is considered the home of hockey, the US wants to beat Canada more than any other country. That and the fact that Canadians are particularly arrogant when it comes to "their" sport. That may or may not be the player's perception, but it is the Canadian media's perception. I've heard it said many times that Canadians are usually considered the nicest people in the world, and I would agree.....except when it comes to hockey. Canada's #1 rival is the US and vice versa.

The idea that Finland are Canada's 'rivals' is laughable, not because Finland aren't a better test than Russia or America, but because there's absolutely no animosity between the countries. A rivalry isn't about talent, if that were the case, every year the WJC final would be a 'rivalry' game.
@RoyalMela
@RoyalMela 3 жыл бұрын
True. Finns always want to beat Sweden, and most of the times we do. Canada has always been the "big and bad" but we do play very similar style of hockey, with of course way smaller talent pool. It's always great to beat Canada, but we Finns don't think Canada as our rival. More like the biggest challenge ahead. It might be a good luck charm to us, since every time we beat Canada in playoffs, we win the title. That happened in 2019 and 2016 in the first round, and 2014 semifinals. Even in legendary Piestany 1987 Finland tied Canada in group stage and also 1992 Finland won 3-2 in group stage game. Maybe some in Canada think Finland is a rival because our big major victories over Canada in important games? Last eight tournaments it's been Canada three times as champions, Finland three times, USA twice.

Here are the last 7 Canada-Finland matchups... - 2012 Bronze - Canada 4-0 - 2014 Semifinal - Finland 5-1 - 2015 Preliminary - Canada 4-1 - 2016 Quarterfinal - Finland 6-5 - 2018 Preliminary - Canada 4-2 - 2019 Quarterfinal - Finland 2-1 OT - 2020 Semifinal - Canada 5-0 They've gone back and forth beating each other. Also, other than that bronze medal game, whoever won Canada vs Finland won gold. - 2021 Preliminary - ???

But I don't really even care when we lose to them, if they beat us its always a deserved win. Against the US and especially Russia they play dirty as hell which makes losing to them actually suck. So nah. That's not a rivalry. Thats just luck. 1. Russia 2. USA 3. Finland 4. Sweden. Sweden use to be in front of Finland due to the 2006 Olympics, but they've really underperformed since then. So I guess one could say Finland is climbing. But still nowhere close to the US and Russia.

In 2011 canada was up 3-0 & absoloutly blew it. In 2015 canada almost blew a 5-1 lead (i think) & in 2012 russia almost blew a 6-1 lead in the semis. Dont forget about the bronze match in 2013 when russia taunted canadas bench when they won in overtime. You just dont see that in games vs the USA

For real, it's Russia: Corwin's biggest point is that Russia hasn't won the tournament in 10 years, USA has. America has won once after Russia's last win, and has made the finals I believe twice more in that decade span. Hockey isn't the same anymore where Canada just dominates, if you get to the final, you have a shot at gold. Not to mention, only one of the US teams gold came against Canada in the finals in the last decade, but guess who Canada has played in the final three times in the same span? Russia

@@seancosgrove1 for the same reason they don't have shootouts in the nhl playoffs. A shootout becomes a battle of 1v1 between the goalie and the shooter making it no longer a team game.

@noah3760 noah3760 Still faulty logic. Teams agree to the rules before playing the tournament. Team USA won based on the rules in play at the time. I'm not saying that that shootout isn't silly, but choosing one instance and not all instances doesn't make sense.
