Carlos Ghosn was a businessman with a cult-like following. Credited with turning around the fortunes of several major auto companies, he was showered with awards, flattering profiles and even appeared on a Lebanese stamp. However, Ghosn is now in the limelight for a different reason - as a fugitive. CNBC’s Nessa Anwar walks us through what has happened so far.

Japan is a VERY VERY conservative society. There's a legit historical reason why foreign CEO's don't take the top job of Japanese companies. World is not entirely surprised that this happened to Carlos. This was orchestrated to kick him out of the CEO role. He had become very powerful. Everything else is just noise. If Japan can get a face-saving alternative, they would not even pursue the case against him anymore. Remember when the Vice Chairman of Softbank (Nikesh Arora, ex Google President) faced allegations of unethical behavior (news reports surfaced suddenly)? Nikesh was supposed to be the successor to Masayoshi Son. Once Nikesh resigned & left Softbank, everything was cool. Carlos did not back down to the political pressures & he paid the price for it!

The reason Carlos was arrested and charged was to remove him as CEO from Nissan and Mitsubishi -there is no question about that. The fact that they never managed to convict him or even bring him to trial despite 2 years holding him and the CFO without ANY communications indicates a lack of proof even with abundant if not all the evidence. What IS true is that Carlos G. exercised heavy control of all three companies and was paid more than other auto CEOs. There was plenty of embarrassing spending for a CEO that cut spending on all other employees, but Carlos's spending on himself pales compared to how much Nissan waists on unnecessary employees that needed to be cut. Carlos G. was arrested, but Japan is now the source of embarrassment. How can Japan be a major industrial power when it has a two bit kangaroo court for a legal system? Who would want to live or work there if they can be abducted by the government for no reason and left to rot? The root of the problem at Nissan (Japan?) is they have no respect for ownership.

@skyak Actually, he had already retired from Nissan. He was asked to remain on the Board of Directors. He wasn't CEO anymore when he was arrested. He now wishes he had retired completely and not agreed to remain on the board. This is Japanese corporate style - take someone out instead of disagree with them. Nissan just wanted to remain autonomous. Nissan didn't have voting rights, only Renault did. That is why this happened. Ghosn didn't do anything wrong. He got back stabbed by the very guys whose signature is required on all financials - even those he was arrested for. This case stinks.

Just for fun... Remember when Japan treated him like a living God after he saved the company, launched the Nissan GTR program, made Nissan successful in Racing at home and worldwide? People hated him from the start at Nissan because employees were promoted for their seniority not talent or dedication. Employees with good ideas were not encouraged to share them, in meetings, seniors employees just talked when asked a question and just said yes or sorry. When someone had a good idea... If he had a boss who listens, the boss would be the only one to get credit and the employee would never be seen as someone worth keeping or promoting.

Reminds me of when Captain Schettino capsized his cruise ship, and then claimed he “fell into a lifeboat” by accident. Or when Captain Yiannis Avranas’ ship, The Oceanos, began sinking, and he along with the crew secretly abandoned ship WITHOUT sounding the alarms for the rest of the passengers. He later claimed “it doesn’t matter when I say abandon ship, abandon is for everybody. If they want to stay, they can stay.” People in power, who damage the trust of their positions, just reinforce the stereotype that absolute power, corrupts, absolutely.

It's a great country overall with good people. it's just the justice system that's skewed, like many people already stated in the comments prosecutors don't pursue cases unless they believe they can win. Also most Japanese companies still believe in lifetime employment so when a foreign man takes control and starts laying people off, you can bet many people were shocked and felt wronged

Bruh all I gotta say is I dont care if hes guilty or not but Japan's court system is terrible. Just go watch the video about how judges would not overturn a verdict even if evidence was found that proves that undoubtedly a person is innocent, because the system isnt supposed to be wrong. And also no matter if they never find more proof once they bring a case against you they will continue to come at you until something sticks.
