@ataconazi8 жыл бұрын
Eh I don't think so. He's a fanastic composer in his own right, but if you're trying to call him a genius for this kind of musical dramatism with interwoven character and mood themes/foreshadowing using inversions/subtle hints it's not his invention. It's a clear extension of Richard Wagner's signature. RW is a true genius.
@hannahkillian6898 жыл бұрын
+VSM_Jailhouse Why can't they both be geniuses?
@ataconazi8 жыл бұрын
Because John Williams hasn't really done anything new or surprising. He just has really good melodies. Some of his stuff also happens to be plagiarized. You literally wouldn't have any music you had in the 20th century without Tristan Und Isolde. It's literally that important
@ianuus8 жыл бұрын
And of course RW is entirely innocent of plagiarism. Certainly not the Tristan chord, and certainly not from Berlioz. Also you're using literally not using "literally" literally.
@ataconazi8 жыл бұрын
to compare the plagiarism of JW (well known instances of straight lifting of material, without changing anything at all - see the beginning of part 2 of stravinsky's rite vs. JW dune sea) to RW's influences is asinine. To say the Tristan Chord itself is plagiarized shows a complete lack of understanding of what it means and how it used. By itself, it's just a half diminished 7th chord. Obviously a chord that has been used an uncountable number of times prior. The way it is used in the opera, 'resolving' to another half diminished 7th chord and never resolving to the tonic until 5 hours later is why the "tristan chord" became known as the "tristan chord"

Very interesting analysis! I love these kinds of videos and it's not far-fetched when you notice Williams has done this before, dating back to the Phantom Menace with the theme of the Emperor in the end credits track sung by choirs and Anakin's theme having hints of the Imperial March in it. Great video
@aza3ful18 жыл бұрын
+Alex Naveira Also if Anakin's theme has hints of Vader as a sign of things to come for the character, maybe that leaves Rey in the same boat, turning to the dark side somehow in the future?
@Teemums8 жыл бұрын
+Alex Naveira Yes! I'd be excited to hear in the future movies, that as Rey turned to the dark side, John Williams reveals the Darth Vader theme underneath Rey's theme.
@Teemums8 жыл бұрын
+Alex Naveira I also caught from the novelization of TFA a hint of the dark side (probably Snoke) calling to her already. In the book, after she has beaten Kylo Ren in the snowy forest, she hears a voice: "Kill him." She pretty much instantly refuses to listen to it though, but I was left thinking that Snoke could try to replace Kylo with her in the future.

I think this sort of analysis... in addition to someone's knowledge of the EU (like my own), you can clearly see that Disney is following the story of Jaina and Jacen very closely although they are mixing it up a bit with the relationships. Han's son is very clearly juxtaposed as Jacen... and the simple use of the name Ben, which was Luke's son in the EU, is something that gives fans (albeit not super obsessive fans like us) something to latch onto from previous films. They can easily remember that Ben was the name Obiwan went by on Tatooine. I wholly expect Rey to be revealed as Luke's daughter... I would be really excited to follow her story if that's the case. I feel it needs to be that way. Although it shouldn't be difficult, I feel just as taken by Rey's beauty and strength as I was by Leia's in the original trilogy.

So - here's my theory. The theme that is playing when Rey first meets Luke is not 'Luke's' theme or the theme associated with the light side of the force. It's the theme we first here when Rey is resisting Kylo Ren. I think it represents some sort of combined light/dark force that is very powerful and lies outside the traditional boundaries of light and dark. That's why Rey is so powerful. I think that this combined or 'whole force' first appeared when Luke was teaching Ben Solo. Unable to control the power of it, or stay away from the dark side of it, Luke banished himself knowing someday someone would emerge who was able to bring balance to this more powerful version of the force. That's Rey. He devised a way to be found that only Rey - or someone with her power - could uncover. Now she is there not to be trained by Luke, but to be his salvation and the salvation of the Jedi's. We hear Luke's theme when the light saber appears. That will be the instrument that will allow Luke and Rey to bring focus to this new power. Again, the light saber waiting to be found by the one who could use it. Rey. The force that is 'awakening' is more powerful than the force that is confined to either light or dark. I think were in for quite a ride!
@eusantis6 жыл бұрын
No. It confirms that she "is" the same Force that was within Anakin/Vader. But she is not the Grand Daughter. So the lack of bloodline. There is something even deeper in her. So the things revelated about Rey in the VIII have all the sense.

There is a certain irony in that Palpatine’s theme is dark and ominous, fitting his role in the story. And yet, his granddaughter has a theme that’s quite beautiful, and almost sad, pensive. She’s in inverse of her grandfather. He is all powerful, in control of everything (seemingly) and she lives alone scrapping junk to survive.
@Gilmaru8 жыл бұрын
Even if this is on purpose, it could mean different things. It could imply for example that she has the potential to become a new "Vader" (a forshadowing perhaps?). But I think her theme resembles Yoda's and Luke's theme much more than Vader's (in Luke's case it points in the same direction).
@sanadamakie8 жыл бұрын
It could also be possible that, since Anakin's now a Force Ghost, it could be a hint of his actual, Force presence around Rey, especially since you mentioned that the motif pops up whenever she was alone or in remembrance of her family.

SPOILERS (With a possible theory spoilers as well) ________________________ ________________________ ________________________ ________________________ ________________________ I am 99% certain that she is Luke's daughter, there is a possibility that she could also be Han and Leia's daughter but I just don't think that's true, but who knows. Anyways here are the things that I picked up that could point to the fact that she is Luke's daughter: - On the poster Rey is holding her staff parallel to Kylo holding his saber. This could either be an indication of them being the 2 main rivals or the fact that they both have Skywalker blood. - She was left on Jakku at a very young age on a desert planet. Anakin was born on Tatooine a desert planet. Luke was taken to Tatooine to be protected from his father and the Empire. Rey, most likely, was left on Jakku to be protected from possibly her cousin Kylo Ren (Who turned against her father and destroyed everything that Luke had built when he was creating a new generation of Jedi) , the Knights of Ren and the remnants of the Empire, now known as the First Order. Rey and Luke have quite a similar story so that is something worth thinking about. - Obvious one, when Rey was in Maz's castle, the Skywalker lightsaber called to HER, not to Finn who used it or anyone else, but her specifically, and the fact that she heard Luke's, Obi-Wan's and Yoda's voices also just further proves that point. - When Rey get's the lightsaber just as she is about to fight Kylo, part of the Skywalker theme plays. I doubt John Williams would have just randomly played the Skywalker theme then without any meaning. - The way Luke looks at Rey at the very end is very interesting, it's really hard to say what the meaning of that ending is but I am just pointing it out for those who have some theories.

But it's called "The Force Motif" not "Luke's Motif". And there's the theory about Rey being the reincarnated Chosen One (aka not just reincarnated Anakin...bigger than that). In which case this video pointing out the links between "The Force Motif", "Vader Cadence" and "Scavenger/Rey's Motif" could likewise be used to lend some creedence to the idea that she is the new convergence in the Force, like Anakin was...the living embodiment of the Force for this next era, as Anakin was from Episodes 1-6. The theory is here: www.reddit.com/r/starwarsspeculation/comments/3x5iqm/tfa_spoilers_theory_about_the_chosen_one_prophecy/ And it's completely captured my imagination. Been adding some ideas to it across KZfaq videos but haven't collected. I'd love to copy and paste and share for anyone curious.

I'm now starting to think she isn't Luke's daughter... rather, she is Luke's "Sister" (if you want to call her that). In some way, shape, or form she is the product of Vader. She could have been created in a lab somewhere and her backstory before Jakku could unfold during eps 8 and 9.. Sure, it's a stretch, but it's interesting. I actually heard it too when listening to the sound track. Also in Luke's theme at the end of the movie there's a mysterious sounding intro but you can also hear a piece of Vader's theme in it before it turns into the original Luke's theme! I thought that was cool and could be hinting at Luke's emotional state (more than likely conflicted)

the only thing that gets me, though, is when Snoke asks Kylo if he has felt the awakening, the only person in the story so far to have had any sort of "awakening" is Finn. The force baby theory is basically Rey is another one like anakin a miracle baby made by the force. Making her vader's half sister.
@josephrobichaud28527 жыл бұрын
I agree with this to an extent since yoda claims "a prophecy that misread, may have been"....in my opinion, the force will always try to balance itself, just like nature....when it sways too far in one direction, it takes steps to recreate the balance. (Anakin born at the height of the jedi order, Rey born as Luke trained a new order of jedi etc)after the events of ROTS we are left in balance (2 jedi 2 sith) at the end of ROTJ we are left with ONE (grey) jedi...though grey jedi is no longer a canon term, we can all agree that luke was able to use the dark side to defeat vader but not give into it thus creating balance in one being....and once Luke started the new order, balance was lost since he was not training padawans to use both sides in balance within one self and one that order was destroyed by Kylo Ren, the dark side now has the upper hand...still out of balance. Welcome Rey. Who in similar fassion to Luke, is shown to use aggression (dark side) to defeat Kylo Ren at the end of TFA showing that like Luke, she (and probably Kylo by the end of the trilogy) can live in balance within themselves and thus creating balance in the force.

Very interesting. What's missing from the analysis, is the critical point that the force theme is also equally well known and often named Ben kenobi's theme. She is somehow anakin or vaders manifestation in the galaxy,as the return or RENaissance of the chosen one of the force.But this time around, to do things right and finish the job he was destined to do- Kill the plague that is causing the imbalance. Before,brushing this off as crazy, consider the BIG canon subplot of qui-gon,yoda,kenobi learning apotheosis (transcending mortality as beings of light with the force), and anakin following them later. If apotheosis is canon, why not reverse-apotheosis? Star Wars is basically the most famous retelling of the classic recurring myth of the Chosen one's BIRTH, DEATH (or fall to darkness of hell) and rebirth for redemption.

Yes, that is the more likely story (there would be a lot of holes in the story on how Han & Leia wouldn't know) but it's nice to speculate... :)

Interesting analysis. I wish I was better with music so I could do some similar investigation. I wouldn't be surprised at all if the music was also a clue, but I'm wondering if other characters have their own unique themes. These similarities you observe might not indicate "family" but might indicate "force sensitive" or "similarity of outlook/struggles". I'm pretty sure Rey has no connection to Yoda, except in terms of educational lineage. (Yoda taught Luke, Luke will teach Rey.) Or possibly, the themes could indicate which side of the Force guides them, since we have some indication that Rey is primarily light side, but is a little touched by darkness in the scene where she fights Kylo Ren in the snow on Starkiller Base. Your thoughts?

You should have included JarJar's love theme - it becomes obvious that Rey is Yoda and JarJar's offspring.

I think she is Luke's daughter, the movie was made as stated similar to "the Return of the Jedi" with that of two family members fighting against each other, and her tears at the end of the movie is like that of a daughter reunited with her father because why would she cry to some stranger?

kurzackd I personally have always been a fan of a wild theory that both Rey and Ben/Kylo were created by Snoke by manipulating midi-chlorians like Sidious did with Anakin. Making Kylo and Rey estranged “twins” which explains their connection.

John Williams has said before that he doesn't like to read scripts for the movies he composes scores for. He prefers to watch the film and compose to that, so that he can be surprised by the twists and turns of the storyline and then reflect that surprise into the music he writes. With that attitude, I doubt he knows who Rey is, in terms of her history and family. I think that the similarities between Rey's Theme and the Force Theme (particularly the part of the finale that combines the two) is intended to show similarities between their characters. I don't think this is in the sense of saying 'she is definitely Luke's daughter/a Skywalker'. I think it's open to interpretation. It could be setting her up as a new hero with no blood-ties to the Skywalkers. I don't know...but I definitely don't think John Williams is hiding secret clues in the score.

+Rori Tudor That's very true - he didn't know about Vader in Episode V, and I wonder if Vader would have had a stronger musical identity in IV if Williams had known. Look at what he did in Episode I, where there weren't many secrets. But there is always a chance that Williams knows something about Rey - and the Imperial March does have an unexpectedly strong (and seemingly uncalled for?) presence in the score. I'm going to keep digging!

Wouldn't Han know if he had a missing daughter? Hadn't thought about a younger, conflicted Ben Solo hiding his own cousin after killing off the other trainees as he wouldn't be completely in the control of the Dark Side; not fully Kylo Ren, yet. Loss of a daughter could have been exactly what would push Luke into retreat.

Ah, leitmotifs. Williams knows how to use them, and doesn't do so without a reason, like all great composers.

Luke and Obiwan were devout Jedi. NO BABES which means no babies which means she cant be a daughter or granddaughter. the vader theme is present because she is Anakin/ Vader reincarnated to fix the mess he made the first time around. That's the best theory I've heard and after thinking about the movie and how she just destroys Kylo Ren with no training and has that crazy reaction to Anakins light saber, and has visions like Anakin did.... Im all in on it.
@jeffsterner228 жыл бұрын
This is not technical at all...but listen to a anakin vs obi-wan from revenge of the with soundtrack, it stars at 8 seconds and plays throughout....and listen for it in Maz's Counsel from the force awakens soundtrack...it!s in-between 1:40-1:50...sounds like a subtle hint to me...in the movie, it stars right after Rey says she doesn't want any part of it after the discovery of the light saber
@Sraye8 жыл бұрын
+Jeffrey Sterner ... That, combined with young and old Obi-wan voices appearing in her Force vision. This is adding fuel to the Rey is a Kenobi theory. Plot twist - Rey ... is the daughter of Luke Skywalker and a female Kenobi whom Obi-wan fathered during his hermit life. I.e. Obi-wan's granddaughter, and Luke's daughter, because Luke took Obi-wan's daughter for his wife.. It's a small galaxy after all. Then again, who said Obi-wan was the only child. There probably is a Kenobi family out there in the galaxy with a long line of Kenobis. Obi-wan was taken to be trained as a Jedi, but he could have other siblings, who had children, and they became Force sensitive later and one of them finds her way to become Luke's wife and she has a child.
@jeffsterner228 жыл бұрын
One quick edit...it's probably more like 1:35 - 1:50 in Maz's Counsel...and it's actually after Maz tells Rey that "whoever" she's waiting for on Jakku is never coming back

To my ear it sounds more like trying to prove your own initial hypothesis. However, you are right: John Williams does know who Rey is and Rey's theme as leitmotif must already expose this. I believe Rey's theme and thus Rey the character is derived from the few mysterious tones of the desert hermit Ben Kenobi, just before he becomes a jedi Obi Wan Kenobi again. I am not a composer, so you refute this. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/lZiFi91hltHaaIU.html

You say 0:44 sounds like Vader's Theme? It sounds a whole lot more like the _Schindler's List_ soundtrack. Is that supposed to mean Rey is secretly a Jew? A lot of Williams pieces sound similar to other pieces he wrote, you're grasping for straws a bit I think. So do you guys thoroughly listen to John Williams music? The themes of Force Awakens sound like very basic background notes compared to Williams's real stuff. Unfortunately the industry doesn't care as much about inspiring good music in its composers these days, including Disney. Rey's theme was _decent_ but everyone shouldn't hype JW when he's already the best composer, at least I know of, show some actual judgment and standards please? Seeing the genius in every single moment of his music is grasping for straws when we know for a fact a lot of people could compose his more background-like pieces with ease. It is his perfectly orchestrated amazing moments that truly baffle us and aren't reconstructable: E.T., Star Wars IV and V, Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park, Harry Potter, Superman, and many of his pieces which are tremendously catchy.

+MalachiCo0 This seems like the most likely explanation. The fact it can sound so similar to the imperial march simply by being sped up a little, plus the fact that TFA borrowed so directly from ep4 which lends credence to the alleged leaks.

Ben Solos is also similar to Vaders. And Williams did state in an interview it was fine purposely. He know exactly what he is doing. I don't think she's reincarnated, but the granddaughter of vader
