The beauty of t e l e p a t h, in my opinion, is that he has become to the vaporwave genre what Picasso or Dali sort of were to the visual art. He doesn't roll with taking you into a certain atmosphere, providing you with some sort of context or giving you a pre-packaged idea of what his music is really about. He gifts you with a carefully edited, mellow and melodic, but vague and overly long song and leaves you to make your own peace with it. What you feel about the song is what the song is about. Whatever perception you are ready to give to the song is the meaning the song has. The songs themselves are chaotic, with so much heavy chorus that you can literally hear notes that rang 5 seconds ago. Their lyrics are muffled, bordering on unlistenable. The album covers are mostly abstract art, with an occasional asian woman popping here and there. But they still manage to evoke a deeper meaning, because of the way they are composed and presented. The songs are really about nothing, but at the same time about everything. And the only thing that limits them is your imagination.

I remember the first time I listened to telepath, It was 1 Am and I was reading a website future timeline that has predictions stretching far into the future. It was the most surreal experience for some reason, reading about the worlds technology developing to be unrecognisable while these chill tones played. Since then he’s been a standard listen for me, pure class

t e l e p a t h ‘s music did wonders for me while studying at the library on-campus late into the night when barely anyone was around… it was a very surreal experience, it really does make you lose track of time and personally helped me focus a lot better. Those are good memories.

I love listening to t e l e p a t h テレパシー能力者's music. Whether it's his solo albums or his collab albums, he's one of the many important figureheads in the Vaporwave genre. As stated in the video, he pretty much brings something unique to the genre and is widely praised and recognized for this. He is most likely aware of this and prefers to remain anonymous whilst doing what he loves and allow the listeners to immerse themselves into his dreamscape of sound. I would expect nothing less from the individual themselves.

Ooo boy ... once again, where to start =D 1) Precedent - I have repeatedly stated that there is nothing new under the sun and there is often a precedent to what has been done before. This is not to take anything away from what he has done (far from it). But knowing what has come before can often better explain what is happening now (and can even open "new doors" so to speak). In this case, the one artist I think can be described as being a good precedent for t e l e p a t h is Steve Roach. He started in the early 1980s being influenced heavily by artists like Tangerine Dream and Vangelis. But, as the story goes, a near-fatal motorcycle accident helped defined his own sound and approach for the rest of his music-making. This is first shown in his 1984 album Structures from Silence, where it was an effort to bring a listener to that state he had sensed, which was very likely the "frozen in the moment" and "life flashing before the eyes". Later on, a journey in Australia would inform his sound again with the 1988 album Dreamtime Return and incorporate ethno-tribal sounds. (His peer and sometime mentor, Michael Stearns, also has a similar journey and result. He is best known for working with Ron Fricke on the music for Chronos, Baraka and Samsara). Steve Roach is insanely prolific - putting out as many as five or so albums a year - and has become one of those singular artists within the ambient realm. To sum up, even if he never heard of Steve Roach, I cannot help but hear the unspoken similarities between the two. In a way, I think both of them reached very similar conclusions about the power of music, which leads to ... 2) Music as meditation - All meditative practices have two essential components: concentration and mindfulness. The concentration comes from focusing on one task and one task only: breathing, mantra/chant, image, even music. By concentrating on one thing, you begin to be mindful of everything else around you, which means having enough awareness of that thing's existence but not too much as to lose focus. Maybe it's because I'm getting more and more interested in this, both personally and creatively, but I am seeing music as both a means of meditation and a way to illustrate it. In other words, it's an avenue upon which any listener can take and experience. I wouldn't be surprised if this is t e l e p a t h's goal. There is certainly demonstrations of this in the music itself: the long lengths (something else Roach has been known to do), the gradual changes and sonic drifts, the evocative imagery, the use of Japanese, etc. 3) Anonymity and creativity - I can only speak for myself. And for me, I make no mystery about making music and where to get it. While I use a moniker, I make no secret who is behind it. At the same time, the plus side of using one is to create that distance to where you are just listening to the music and not getting fixated on the person making it. At the same time, there is no mistaking who is making this. One thing I hear pretty often whenever I get feedback or a response to my own music is: "I can hear you" or "That's definitely you". Honestly, if it was 100% confirmed who he really is, I don't think that would take away from the aura of it *because* the music is so well-constructed. Take Pink Floyd for instance. Now, more than back then, it's very clear who the members were and generally what roles they play. And I do note this when I listen to their albums. But even with that knowledge, I still hear and respond to the music, and that is what should matter in the end. This is also how I "separate the art from the artist" for it's the music that creates the experience, not so much the musician. As Vangelis famously said once, "I function as a channel from which music emerges from the chaos of noise". Conclusion - there is certainly a lot *I* can say about t e l e p a t h and there are still some gaps in the discography. (And don't get me started on the mammoth task of dealing with Virtual Dream Plaza.). All in all, I'd say his reputation is well-earned and I'm glad he makes the music he does. In a way, he's the deep soul of the scene, a nice reminder that when the memes have faded and the novelty is gone, what truly remains is what matters. And that is beautiful. P.S. I still stand by ロストエデンへのパス [The Path to Lost Eden]. In fact, t e l e p a t h's side is a nice "short intro" to his sound and approach as well as refinement of his craft at that point.

Just stumbled onto this channel. Really good stuff. I do feel like T e l e p a t h is important because he shows online music production is really one of the last fields where you can exist in total anonymity, but still be influential. Only letting your art speak for you. Something detached enough to still have a personality, but not show who's behind the mask.

Your description of t e l e p a t h’s music in terms of its very slowly and gradually changing structures (leading you to only realize minutes later that something has changed) is brilliant and it reminds me so much of what I love about early Philip Glass pieces from the 60s, such as “Music In Twelve Parts” or “Music With Changing Parts” (and other “minimalist” composers of that era who did similar things). I wonder if t e l e p a t h was influenced/inspired by that sort of thing at all …

Considering I have 3 albums by 2814 on the way you can say I like the ambient side of vaporwave. Telepath is so good to just put on and calm your brain. I struggle with feeling like my brain is overactive and the ambience of the tracks helps get my brain on one track. I think that's why I like music in general, but lyrical music can effect that line of thought and change emotions. I considered going on a diatribe about the beauty of humans and our ingrained connection to music but I realized most have probably already heard the spiel.

t e l e p a t h is an absolute genius. I didn't truly understand how special his treatment of samples was until I listened to one of his mastepieces (一见钟情 - 虚拟梦想广场) and compared it to Internet Club's \ 空气+空间 ///. These two songs use the same fundamental sample, but while Internet Club created a nice and glitchy vaporwave song, t e l e p a t h managed to turn that same sample into one of the most beautiful and trascendental pieces of music I have ever heard. I cry almost every time I listen to 一见钟情 (around the time when it hits the 13 minute mark), it's almost unbelievable to me that it was created from the same sample as the Internet Club song. I don't mean to say that Internet Club is bad (they are a fantastic and groundbreaking artist in their own right), but I just wanted to highlight how amazing t e l e p a t h is when it comes to create hypnotic, dreamlike soundscapes. Great video as always Pad, although I think you could have highlighted t e l e p a t h's obsession with the topic of love, since I think it's one of the most important aspects of his discography.

Only really understood t e l e p a t h after listening to all of VDP for long hours on the train to and from work. Being from a metal background, I've found it very hard trying to explain to friends the appeal and aesthetic of VW. I've even wanted to bring elements of the aesthetic of VW over to my metal projects because it's 90% of what I listen to. I will always love and appreciate the anonymous aspect of the genre and understand completely artists who take this approach when confronted with an industry which chews up and spits out so many forgettable artists.

broo ever since I started listening to vaporwave I've wondered a lot about telepath and who would they be, this was the video I didn't know I was expecting. It's kind of contradictory that this genre is driven forward by an embracing of technology and retrofuturistic stuff yet telepath doesn't abide by the rules of this virtual world, and that makes it even more cool. Have you heard about bodyline? He's one of my favourite vaporwave artists and I wonder what do people think of his music.

Interstellar Love is one of the best things i've got the pleasure to hear, the very opposite of a ear rape. Telepata é foda!

i fall asleep underneath my birth of a new day tapestry every night for peaceful, ambient dreams (this sounds like a joke but it's really not lol). also i'm in love with the telecrew design, I'm super stoked to get mine in the mail

So basically, the way you described it, it's a similar premise to minimalist composition (Phillip Glass, Terry Riley, Steve Reich, etc.). Gradual, undetectable changes through repetition over an elongated period of time.

This is interesting and I ordered the FFV1 yesterday and when I was done with my purchase it was sold out. Also Pad what did you think of the extra 400 white copies that the had for sale as a contingency ? Those did not sell as fast but when I got up this morning they were gone. Truly as desired album and man I can't wait for it to get here. Thank you pad for making me aware of this and the other facets vaporwave.

FFV1 is going to be so so good I can't wait for all of us to get it...and im happy my video made more people aware of it, not only do the artists and label deserve the recognition but its going to charity which is great,

I'm curious how better will sound on this release compared to your copy of hit vibes? Will make that noted when you get to a review of the album?

I saw t e l e p a t h at Electronicon last night. I was so excited to see him and to see who he is, but he wore a mask on stage. I thought of this video, the music was amazing though.

how to telepath: step 1 - loop a sample like a regular vaporwave song step 2 - slow down to 30 minutes step 3 - put 5 overdoses of both reverb and phaser done
