Uchinaan-guchi is the language spoken by the Uchinaanchu the indigenous people of the Ryukyu (dragon) islands. They have some common words that have been taken from the Japanese language however much of the language shares nothing nor sounds anything close to Japanese which makes me wonder why they call it a dialect? The American military used the language to their advantage during WWII because it made it easy to determine quickly whether or not the person was Japanese or a native of Okinawa 🧐

I'm happy too! My mother was born in Naha & she spoke Uchinaan-guchi as a first language which caused ridicule in school. I love everything about the island & I need to get back out there sometime soon.
