For years, Jeff Gordon was the "king of the road" in NASCAR. But now that the four-time champ is long retired, who has taken the crown as the best road course racer in NASCAR?
From V8 Supercars star Shane van Gisbergen to Cup Series regulars Tyler Reddick, Kyle Larson and Chase Elliott, there's no shortage of drivers who are good and turning left and right in stock cars. But only one driver can be the best.
In this clip from the O'Reilly Auto Parts Pit Reporters, NASCAR.com's Zach Sturniolo and SiriusXM's Davey Segal give their take on the best road racers in NASCAR and Davey says the best might be someone you don't immediately think of when it comes to road courses. Number 1 Road Course Driver. SVG 🏆 Best Street Course Driver. SVG🏆 Why SVG! His braking and cornering is next level compared to anyone else. In his interviews he sometimes explains how he would attack and ride the corners, looking ahead and setting himself up for the next. His race craft is next to none. When I listen to other Drivers they don't break it down like Shane. What the car is doing and studying each Driver and how to get more speed out of a car that is mediocre. My vote is SVG NZ and sister country AUSTRALIA 🥝🥝🩴🩴

SVGs race craft is above anything I've seen in 50 years of watching any and all motorsport. I'm Aussie, so technically duty bound to pick an Aussie when against or compared to our Kiwi brothers. Its not even close!

Based upon what? He’s got one win, a city street race that only he had some kind of experience with. How about we see him win 4-5 races on the other road courses before we anoint him as the best in the cup series? If he does it, great. He’ll get the credit. But as of right now, show me don’t tell me. That’s like annointing Carlos Alcaraz as better than Federer, Nadal or Djokovic in tennis after only one or two grand slams. Nobody would do that!

@@verbalkint4052 Based upon 30 years of racing virtually everything and winning, based on he's one of the most adaptable racers on the planet, based on his insane tyre management. It seems you guys just don't care about his past , or are just ignorant to the facts. He's one of the best car set up guys racing world wide, this seems to be known to everyone but our American friends.....2 wins on street courses and a debut win in Chicago last year, as well as a couple of top ten finishes on ovals, something he's not used to, just like the car, totally different to anything he's ever raced, and he goes out and wins anyway. No luck what so ever, all talent, as you'll continue to see. Wait until he gets into NASCAR, those cars are more like what he's used to racing down under.....

It's how good the car is on the day. It doesn't matter as there are so many variables that effects the outcome...mainly getting wrecked towards the end and especially after yellows then those restarts

SVG's car wasn't the best on Saturday though.. he had broken or failing steering on his car from the start of the 2nd stage.

Based upon what? Your biased opinion? As of right now, there is literally no comparable metric to base that uneducated opinion upon. He’s won ONE cup race. ONE. At a track nobody had ever run before in the circuit and that he had the most experience in (in terms of street racing). We get it. SVG is a super talented driver. But you fan boys are going into fantasy land with these statements positioned as facts. Predicting and projecting his career path in the sport is one thing, but that’s not what any of you guys are doing in this comments thread. You guys are making statements that cannot be backup by any concrete evidence or real accomplishments in NASCAR. Not only is the above true, the guy only has TWO wins in the freaking Xfinity series. In 14 starts. That’s not exactly setting the circuit on fire.

Neither has SVG. You’re making up your own reality. He’s run 5 races in the cup series and has ONE win. On a track he had advantages over everyone in the field since none of them have SVG’s street experience. Good, great, grand, wonderful. He’s the best street car racer in the circuit. But he hasn’t won a race anywhere else in the cup series, including the other road course races. If and when he does start piling up wins there, then you have something to back up the talk. Until then, it’s a bunch of smoke-filled coffee house crap. Didn’t Kyle Larson just drop down to Xfinity and win a road course race? There are lots of cup series drivers that could drop down and win those races most the time. See Kyle Busch. Martin Truex won 3 out of 5 at Sonoma and Larson has now won 2 of the past 4 there. In the cup series. Circling back to the point, let’s actually see SVG dominant and win some races before declaring him King. Because to this point, he isn’t.

@@verbalkint4052 So Salty, he won at Portland and he won at Senoma, and he won his first ever drive last year, In cars he sits on the opposite side of, completely different to anything else he's ever driven, with No prior experience, and he wins, wait till he gets used to the cars.....🤣🤣 He's special, one of the best wheel men on the planet, one of the best setup drivers as well. He was able to use full throttle 13% more than any other driver on the weekend, you wonder why we KNOW he's so good ?

@@verbalkint4052 you’re just picking your stats to try and make yourself look good. If you actually knew what was going on, you would know that at the Indy Road course SVG had a throttle body problem with his car and he couldn’t get to full throttle without it tearing the tyres apart. In that race he still finished top 10 despite this and also being sick as a dog from the night before. Then in Kota he had a car that was falling apart everywhere. The dash was flicking between pages and caused him to speed in pitlane so he copped the penalty, and then the thing dropped the gear so he was racing without gear I think. It’s all of a sudden NASCAR worried about him so they keep giving him cars with mechanical issues so that he doesn’t show them up.

Please come back in a year or two if/when that doesn’t happen. We all know you won’t, except, maybe, to offer excuses why it didn’t happen. It’s always easy to make bold, unfounded claims then show up to gloat if your dart actually sticks and to disappear completely when it doesn’t stick. There’s literally no evidence to support what you’re predicting. None. One win in the cup series on a street course nobody had ever run before and that really only SVG had any real experience in is not proof of impending domination on road courses or anywhere else.

I can play that game too. If Kyle Larson raced super cars full time in NZ and Australia - he’d hardly ever lose a race. Just like he did racing full time on dirt in 2020 when he won close to 50 races that season. Prove me wrong. You can’t. But my statement is just as ridiculous as yours.

The top Cup drivers will have road and street courses sorted for next year. SVG racing style and car data will be analysed in everyway by competing drivers and crew chiefs. I want SVG to be sucessful next year but its not going to be easy. Perhaps he could throw some feints into shifting, cornering and braking in the next road course races to throw the stats jockeys off his scent. Racing is so much fun.

@@MickH60So your admitting SVG being a incredible ROAD RACER has nothing to do with being a KEE WEE and its just that he has spent most of his life turning left and right that gives him a clear advantage..? Don’t get me wrong SVG will be a force to wreckn with but if he was born here in the USA on ovals and not road courses we might see a different racer..? 🏁🇺🇸
