I think my biggest gripe with graphic designers or online artists is they say stuff like don’t work for free but then their work is just not good. That same community got mad when people were using AI to make profile pictures because it was “taking away from their jobs” as if they were going to make something better than the AI. I think people have their priorities mixed right now and want to get paid for something that is either generic or not good.

Man I completely get the work for free concept. I’m a photographer as a side hustle and there is such a thing as paying your dues. Which in this industry means working for free to get the exposure and experiences. The paid work comes with time but the connections and experiences you get along the way are what is going to bring you to the forefront and make people want to use your services.

Your valuable skills aren't so valuable if nobody has recognized it, and it's never going to be recognized if you aren't somehow putting it out there for people to see. And as Maniac said, connections are key, your return on a project isn't always just what your cheque says, it could be new doors opened or long term relationships formed that will make up the difference in the future.
