Who is the lineal champion of every weight-class in the UFC?
Who is the guy who beat the guy - whether they stayed in the promotion, or even moved up in weight.
For example, the newer weight-classes - flyweight, bantamweight, and featherweight - these have very simple and short paths to the modern lineal champ. And for this reason, I’m not doing the women’s divisions.

Made a hilariously simple mistake in not putting O'Malley in over Sterling. The video was made last week, honestly. I just for some reason totally blanked on Sterling having fought and lost. I watched that fight live, covered it on this channel. Big but simple L on my part. 😅 Also, I'm fully aware of what an actual lineal champ is - the definition I'm using is loose and just for fun. That's why i say 'kinda' makes him the lineal champ the first time. I'm sorry to see such a negative response to the use of the word 'lineal'. You guys are right, using the word in this way is not correct due its existing meaning with combat sports. But I felt it was loosely appropriate to give most viewers an idea of what the video + the concept itself was about. Cause overall, I think the concept is fun + worthwhile. Will keep pressing on. I haven't watched their vid, but it is a fun concept. It was fun to make too. People seem to respond quite negatively over the use of the word 'lineal', which I'm disappointed about but I get. Will do better. Personally, I like how the video turned out, aside from the obvious mistake on flyweight + bantamweight.

Not to nitpick but a pretty crucial part of a lineage at a weight class is that if a lineal champ moves up in weight and doesn't return then the lineage restarts at that division when the #1 and #2 contenders fight each other. That'd make the current flyweight champ the lineal champ. I see what you tried but it makes little sense because of this.

Only weird one I know is Jon Jones is technically the linear lightweight champ because BJ Penn lost to Machida, who lost to Shogun, who then lost to Jones

@nutmegriot209 maybe it stems from back when the UFC only had heavyweights and lightweights? The lineal titles may have been easier to track back then if there were only two divisions. Not sure though.

When a fighter retires undefeated, a new lineal champ is crowned when #1 and #2 fight each other. So for FW, that happened when Max and Volk fought. Also I'm pretty sure the lineage doesn't leave the weight class. Fights at different weigh classes don't count.

Crazy how this guy completely misunderstood what a lineal champion is... If someone leaves a weight class while lineal champion and loses, he lost in a difference weight class from the one he is lineal champion in... Therefore he is STILL lineal champion in that other division, and is so until either he fights and loses at that weight again, or retires and the #1 and #2 of that division fight.

Reading the comments I'm realizing mma fans seem to not understand how lineal championships work. Lineal championships are based off the man who beats the man and this can cause a lineal title to leave it's initial division. This is very common in boxing. This is why some combat sports fans don't like to use the lineal titles to determine who is the best.

In boxing, when Michael Spinx went up to heavyweight, the idea of a new lineage was created when the next top 2 contenders fought each other. Which meant that Michael spinx was considered lineal champion until Virgil Hill was given the title of lineal champion after defeating Henry Maske.

No not quite. That would be Jones because Francis ran from Dana's 8 million dollar offer. That means he surrendered the title.

@@EliteNugzyou have to beat the previous lineal champion to be the lineal champion. You don’t stop being the lineal champion because you left a promotion, it’s not an official title and you can’t strip someone of lineal status. That’s just not how it works lol

The best must fight the best and if you don't you're not champion anymore. Besides everyone knows Jon Jones is the greatest fighter in history and would beat any man alive.

If you want an actual good take on this. O’Malley won the lineage from Aljo, who took it from TJ Dillashaw, who took it from Cody who took it Cruz who is the OG champ. There were some switch ups with the belt but that’s the legit lineage.

If someone leaves a weight class and loses in another weight class, it doesn't mean that they lost their lineal title in the previous weight class. Cejudo is still 125 lineal champion until either he fights at 125 again and loses, or retires, allowing #1 and #2 of that division to fight for the lineal champion title. Your understanding of what a lineal champion is, is wrong. This whole video is a mess because of this. Scrap this and remake the video, research to understand what a lineal champion actually is and how the title is passed on.

this isn't how the lineal belt works in boxing. tyson fury is the lineal champ but for example lennox lewis retired as champion. since klitschko was the clear #1 when lennox retired, he became lineal champ without beating him. then, fury beat klitschko and remains unbeaten.

This video makes no sense. Lineal champ usually stays in the division its meant for. Conor KOing Aldo makes him lineal but he abandoned that title when he moved up and didn't defend. Aldo vs Holloway 1 was probably the reset of the lineal belt. Number 1 and number 2 facing off against each other creates a new lineage.

Interesting concept but clearly flawed. You cannot contest for a championship title of a weight class if both fighters do not make weight. It just doesn’t work. Machida cannot contest for the LW title unless he fights the champ making championship weight. Again, interesting/fun but deeply flawed concept.

I don't see why it would magically change in MMA when he's like this in boxing, kickboxing, Muay Thai, etc. It's the man who beats the man. That's why there are fight fans that don't like going by lineage, however other fight fans prefer going by lineage. But yes based off lineage Khabib is the Lineal featherweight champ because again it's the lineage.
