Vishnu, the supreme being in the major hindu tradition and shaper of the universe. Side by side with Shiva the destroyer and Brahma the creator. With avatars you’ve heard of, but may have never known came from the supreme adjudicator of the Hindu pantheon. As the preserver and transformer of the universe he is directly tied to humanity and their development. Vishnu and his avatar Krishna play incredibly important roles within the shin megami tensei universe, but how much of his real world influence ties back to his character? Let’s discuss the keeper of cosmic order. The Hindu gods depiction in shin megami tensei has always been interesting to me and after playing smt 4 apocalypse I was immediately drawn to Krishna. In researching that Hindu god, I was plunged down a rabbit hole of researching the fundamental belief of Hinduism and their relation to not just the character in smt, but to Buddhism, and to the evolution of the human race. I hope you enjoy learning all about the preserver of our reality, even if he is preserving the Kali Yuga. With Krishna trying to end the world it came as quite the surprise that Vishnu was the preserver. Let's learn all about the Hindu god Vishnu together in this episode of smt lore.

Even though my family is mostly comprised of Kali and a few Shiva worshipers, Vishnu has always been my favorite god to read about. There’s a dizzying amount of stories that vary from region to region which used to really frustrate me as a kid because I wanted to find out what was canon lol. Now I’ve learned to appreciate the unique variations and what they have to offer. Anyways, great video and looking forward to more!

@@GoProGamer447 The dungeon crawling thing is an interesting part of JRPG history. Megami Tensei came about during the time JRPGs were basically split between being inspired by Ultima or Wizardry, but the Wizardry style became niche after the success of Dragon Quest and FF.

@@Tony4You Vishnu could see protag as a disruption to remove. For example, if Vishnu had a prominent role in a hypothetical SMT V on the Destroy Throne path he could be like yo destruction is Shiva job gtfo, for law route he could be like maintenance is union work no scabs!

I absolutely love the battle against Vishnu-Flynn in SMTIV-A. I love Hindu aesthetics in general they really were just like "yeah our creator deities have a shit-ton of arms and weird skin colors and they have other-worldly drip."

Actually their multiple arms shows their multiple responsibilities as a deity. Vishnu has 4 arms each of which are knowledge, authority, kindness and power or something along those lines, either ways they represent 4 qualities of a king and so Vishnu is considered as the king of kings. As for otherworldly drip, I'm sorry to say only Vishnu has that but hey there is a ton of cool stuff in hindu myths.

@@gottesurteil3201 chakravartin itself as a word means ''ideal ruler'' but it applies to anything, in his true form, Vishnu has infinite arms, I believe this form is called Vishwaroop or Virat Roop, Vishnu showed this form only to one person called Arjuna but another person called Sanjaya also saw it since he had divine eyes. Apparently one needed to be worthy enough for Vishnu to let them even know he has such a form and Vishnu had to gift them divine eyes to be able to see it. According to Arjuna's description ''With Vishnu's head in the center, each side of his head had the head of another auspicious deity, each worthy of worship with infinite arms that each possess a different quality and an item showcasing that quality, it is marvelous to see the lord in this form but oh supreme soul, Vishnu, I can't help but feel afraid as well, do revert to your form as my friend Krishna. This is the humble request of your devotee.'' Chakravartin as a character is partly fictional but partly real since it's inspired from Buddha but Buddha is also an avatar of Vishnu but as a term Chakravartin is used to refer to an ''ideal king''.

Vishnu also appears as the loading screen in the first Persona game and is also one of the strongest Personas within said game (although under the name Ashura in the English version). ... Matt from the Super Gaming Brothers also made a funny running gag within their Persona 1 let's play speaking as Vishnu during the loading screens with an Indian accent.

SMT4A's Krishna has been a nameless presence in Japan for a long time. And when Buddhism was introduced to Japan, he was worshiped by people as Mahakala. However, in 1595, Mahakala was sealed as Krishna, due to a fight with Flynn's previous life, a young man. The sealed place is of course Kanda-no-Yashiro, but Kanda-no-Yashiro is also a shrine that enshrines Ohkuninushi. Ohkuninushi is also a god identified with Mahakala in Shinto-Buddhism syncretism. I watched this episode and thought SMT4A's Krishna had a great setting. (This episode is published as a short story in the SMT4A official setting material book)

@@Tony4You Narasimha isn't portrayed as intelligent but more as a father, vishnu took a whole avatar just for saving 1 devotee who was a demon by birth, clearly shows vishnu's undiscriminating love and primal rage targeted to the person who harms his devotee.

@@mythicalsoulz4709 in all his forms Krishna is intelligent. And nobody knows Krishna's intelligence. The demon Hiranyakasipu was trying to kill his very own son Prahlada, because he was a devotee of Visnu while simply his Father was a demon tyrant controlling the entire universe, making attempts to kill his son but all attempts failed and resulted in Hiranyakasipu's timely death from Narasimha jumping out of a pillar, and started playing with Hiranyakasipu like a Lion that keeps it's prey between its nails before it finally decides to annihilate and devour it.

@@Tony4You correction: Kalki, and yes you are right, Kalki's main role is saving the good to start the new age. Kalki is indeed like Shiva but with more accuracy but the thing is Shiva has been there all along doing his job, Kalki doesn't take over it, he supports it since the realm of destruction is still under Shiva, remember that Vishnu's role is being the preserver and how can you preserve what is necessary if you can't remove what is unnecessary?

Hinduism isn't actually a polytheistic religion We hindus actually believe in one single God (Ishwar), there is no Vishnu or Shiva, there is only one God that we see as different beings, but it's actually just different aspects of Ishwar.

Outside the ones Tony4You referenced, the tales get increasingly apocryphal, I have found. Chronologically, Indra seems to appear in the Vedas long before Vishnu worship took off, so my bias would be to assume not. Then again, some scholars tracked Krishna to two separate tribes, with no reference to Vishnu for centuries. It's a twisty set of tales, I guess I'm saying.

@@rphb5870 by that logic all religions are pagan, they all have supernatural things going on. pagan means something going against conventional beliefs, Pagans believe in god but not in the religious form, they are close to atheists but not atheists, hinduism has pagans but isn't pagan itself.
