Hello friends and history lovers! And a very happy new year! Thank you so much for supporting my channel! New videos come out every Tuesday at noon! In 2020 my resolution is to create profile videos of 20 intriguing European Queens. 10 Queens regnant - that’s queens in their own right and 10 Queens consort - those who were married to Kings. I have an idea of the fascinating females I would like us to get to know better but I want to hear from you! Who are your favorite European queens, who would you like to learn more about and who are you not so interested in?

Anne of Cleves is my favorite. Hearing the story about how she couldn't speak English so she didn't know about how badly the court badmouthed her, and was proud of how far she came to get to where she was, totally broke my heart. I also love how she survived the longest out of all of them.

Sisi (Elisabeth of Austria) has always been interesting for me. Her life is like a modern take on tragic fairy tales except that the struggles were very real and it played out as it happened. From marrying the emperor Franz Joseph for his love for her, not just mere political reasons to her having to endure her literally evil mother-in-law, and eventually contracting psychosomatic/mental illness no doubt brought about by the strain and stress of a position that she married into. As much as her husband claims to love her he wasn't able to protect her from the controlling nature of his mother (who took their children away from her) and she was truly unprepared for the realities of being empress at least earlier in their marriage. Later though she developed her own liberal political stands and was accused of meddling in issues and advising her husband especially concerning the Italians and Hungarians. She was beautiful, well-loved for her free spirit and her sensitivity to the needs of her subjects (with only a lady-in-waiting, she would visit hospitals and charity wards unannounced and held hands with the dying, sent clothes for children in orphanages) yet obsessively vain and most probably mentally ill and the deaths of 2 of her children brought her bouts of melancholy and depression that she didn't recover from. It was believed that she was sick of the Viennese court and would be ill if she stayed too long despite her desire to stay for her children. This also separated her from her husband more often than he would like as he had to stay in Vienna for his duties. Near the end of her life she has fallen in love with travelling and all that was left between her and Franz are long affectionate letters in constant correspondence. She was also an author and wrote her self as Titania and Franz as Oberon (lol). She made a part of Achilleion (her palace in Corfu) to be his quarters but he was never able to visit. They're a classic example of 2 people who probably loved each other but led very different lives before their marriage and this caused them to not have much in common. She was free-spirited, raised by a hands-on mother and eccentric father while Franz was raised to become emperor. She didn't like doing public duties/official appearances and would sometimes refuse meeting other monarchs. They wanted different things in life and some historians believed Sisi always lamented to her older sister Nene (who was groomed to be Franz Joseph's bride before he decided he won't have anyone but Sisi) how her life would be a lot easier if Franz is not the emperor. It's just tragic imo.

I'm so thrilled that you mentioned Margrethe I of Denmark! She is seriously one of the most underrated women in history, and arguably one of the best female politicians the world has ever seen. I really hope that you end up choosing her. :) Beyond her, here are some other interesting Denmark related queens, whom I find quite fascinating, and can reccomend you reading up on: Emma of Normandy: Arguably one of the most powerful and important woman of the early medieval period, Emma was first married to Æthreled "The Unready" of England, and then, after his death, to his archrival Canute "The Great" of Denmark and England. He married her due to her experience with England and she made him disinherit his other son for her own children. Later, her son from her first marriage became king of England. Throughout the reigns of her husbands and children, she was a very powerful and important councillor, and she is unique in having a historical work made in her honor, the Encomium Emmae Reginae. She was quickwitted, an opportunist, and a medieval power woman. Margaret Fredkulla (The Peacemaker), queen of Denmark: Married to the passive King Niels of Denmark, it was in fact Margaret who ruled Denmark during her 30 year tenure as queen, where Denmark had a prosperous period of peace. She minted her own coins which bore her and her husbands names, with her name first. After her death, Denmark descended into a long period of instability which eventually led to civil war. Ingeborg of Denmark, queen of France: Married to Philip Augustus of France, their marriage caused quite a scandal, when he abandoned her after their wedding night. For 20 years, Philip abandoned her and remarried, while the pope excommunicated him for his actions against her. Eventually they reconciled, but their marriage and later difficulties set the tone for catholic divorce. To this day it shapes the catholic views on remarriage after divorce. Margaret Sambiria, queen of Denmark: Married to Erik IV of Denmark, Margaret is known as Margaret "burst-horse" in Denmark due to her strong personality and temper. She was the first female regent of Denmark, and ruled during the minority of her son, Erik V. She managed to hold Denmark together during a time of struggle between king and clergy, and while her husband's nephews tried to claim the Danish throne. She was also the official ruler of Estonia, which she received as a fief under the Danish crown. Philippa of England, queen of Denmark: Married to Erik VII of Denmark, she was queen during the Kalmar union, and was raised in Denmark by Queen Margrethe I alongside her husband. She learned well by Margrete and inherited her political skills far better than Erik did. A main part of why Erik was tolerated in Sweden was due to her immense popularity. She had most of her fiefs in Sweden, and after she died, King Erik lost most of his popularity and was deposed. She was one of the few rulers of Sweden from the Danish time who was actually popular in Sweden. Margaret of Denmark, queen of Scotland: Married to James III, she is the reason that Orkney and Shetland are part of Scotland, as they were her dowry, when she married King James. Her father, Christian I, could not afford her dowry so instead he pawned off the islands. Technically, they can still be reclaimed by Denmark or Norway if the mortgage is paid off. Historians has described her as a far better-suited ruler than her husband. Caroline Matilda of Great Britain, queen of Denmark-Norway: Married to the insane King Christian VII of Denmark-Norway, Caroline Matilda is best known for her affair with his physician Johan Friederich Struensee, who later became the de facto ruler of Denmark-Norway along with her. During their reign, Denmark-Norway advanced heavily along enlightenment ideas, but they were eventually deposed by Christian VII's stepmother, who returned the country to reactionary ways. Struensee was executed and Caroline Matilda was exiled, where she died a few years later. Her son Frederik VI eventually returned most of her reforms. Her life and affair is the basis for the Oscar-nominated "A Royal Affair".

I, too, was amazed and glad, that Margrete 1. made the list. She is indeed the most underrated Queen in history - and yet the most clever politician and formidable ruler. I could add - 1. Queen Elizabeth Habsburg - married to Christian 2. Put up with his mistress, Dyveke and her mother Sigbrit, who was the Kings adviser. When Chr. 2 was thrown from the throne and exciled, the Habsburg family offerrd her to "come home" - but she said: "My kingdom is where my King is.". She died young. 2. Louise Rasmussen - a balletgirl and commoner married to King Frederik 7. which caused a major scandal. She was the "Mette- Marit" of her time. She had an illegitimate son with the friend of the Crown Prince, Carl Berling (owner of the newspaper, Berlingske Tidende, which still exists.). His mother wouldn't let her son marry her - so she married their mutual friend, the crown prince (Fr. 7. ) instead.

i would just die of happiness if you ever got the chance to do Maria Leopoldina of Austria, who was the empress consort of Brazil. Her story is so sad and she was such an amazing woman. It also involves scandal and a very public affair of her husband, Pedro I of Portugal. It’s one of my favorite instances of the History of my country, Brazil. I think that portraying something outside of europe could be refreshing, maybe? I just LOVE your work!! thank you! ❤️ (also, if you ever by any chance need help translating from portuguese, i’m your gal!)

You all are incorrect. When she was Queen consort she was simply known as Her Majesty, the Queen but in later life was generally known as Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother.
