Before I say anything else, may I compliment the editor of this fascinating traversal of Miss Wang's development as a pianist, paralleling her growth as a concert performer, We see that along with her growth into being the consummate pianist she is today, there has been a parallel growth in the depth of her interpretations. All of this beautifully revealed in the pacing and very smooth merging of the component elements. Along with giving us almost unmatched performances she reminds us of the joy we should have when hearing good music - and she reminds us by displaying joy when creating her musical performances. None of the anguish or pain displayed by many pianists. Yes, she is serious when the music is serious, but she gives the wisp of a smile when the music is more frivolous. Thank you for creating this traversal of Miss Wang's musical pathway into the artist we know today

When this video was posted a little over a month ago, it was, and remains, a polished summary of Miss Wang's career to date. Certainly, it reflected one person's viewpoint, but an intelligent viewpoint which would find much approval. Of course, there can be other viewpoints, and for those who disagree with this assessment of Miss Wang's talents a civilized note expressing another viewpoint would be welcome. Sadly, for some unknown reason, this post, or, at least, some of the supporting comments, have attracted inappropriate and juvenile replies, comments mainly from the one person, but using several "nom de plumes" Such comments and exchanges, represent the lowest form of brainless scribblings, usually contributing nothing to the original content. I hope the latest entrant gets deleted, at which time this can be deleted (please) as it will no longer be serving any purpose - I hope.

I am confused about Yuja Wang, can someone care to explain to me. I do appreciate her playing very much, but I am not great at discerning fine classical music. For the most part I read positive comments about her musicianship. However, there is a small number who are critical of her - indeed VERY caustic, and usually with comments about her sartorial tastes thrown in. To me, I don't care how she dresses - I literally listen to music with my eyes closed. I want to know, is Yuja Wang a true talent, and that her detractors are so put off by her dressing that they could not see past that (or even some other reason, like jealousy). Or is Yuja Wang just an average concert pianist that has achieved fame through extraordinary showmanship. Thank you in advance for your insight.

In my opinion a performance includes the visual as much as the audio side. That said im not put of by her dressing style in the slightest. I do however see why some are so critical of it (being that classical music is a conservative genre) but i do not thing it should be so. Regarding her talent i think its quite obvious that she has nurtured her musical gift into near perfection

I have years of experience teaching History of Music. I have listened to dozens of first line pianists and maybe hundreds of accomplished professionals both live and through recordings during my entire life. My tastes have been always traditional and classical. In my opinion, Yuja Wang is one of a kind, like one of those 19th century virtuosos you've only known about through books. She's got an exhaustive control of the dinamics in every sigle note she plays. She takes the general public's breath away when playing presto and moves the connoisseurs to tears when playing adagio. She has the ability to make you dive into the spirit of every composer or style. She sounds clean and modern but at the same time warm and classical. She sounds academic but fresh. She's got the technical level of a piano contest winner but the depth and the inspiration of an old school master. She is full of terrific ideas and knows when and how to let you know. She pleases the most demanding audiences, orchestras and conductors with unsurpassing versions while trolling haters with her outfits. To me, she is live History of Music.

While she is technically astounding, I, at times, find her interpretations of Beethoven lacking. How do I know? For reference, punch in Valentina Lisitsa on your command line and listen to her play Beethoven. You can A-B them, and you'll clear hear the difference. (Yes, I know Valentina has ruined her personal reputation by tweeting horrific tweets about the Ukrainians and the Russian takeover of Crimea; but we are focusing on her musical skills here not her lack of humanity. )

Imagine if there were no television, no Internet with KZfaq, but only radio. If music fans, especially the male ones, could only hear and not see the Chinese woman, there would be no hysterical hype about this pianist who always exhibits a lot of naked flesh.. Another spurious point I had missed by you Hans; more con artist sexist/racist obsession. MANY artists, in live performances, are enhanced by their personal magnetism and charisma, some (unlike Ms. Wang) whose skills are not of the first rank. And part of that is appearance. That point of yours is typically irrelevant. As far as you stealing the late unlamented georgescancan/mariodisarli's bipolar monomania over 'sex sells': yup, it does. Has since Camille Moke showed a bit of ankle, and Liszt threw around his hair. If the artistic goods were not there, none would have/will last. But what did I say about posting? @antoniong1449

Well, I suppose the short answer is that she is busy enough with being a piano genius and that Western music is fascinating. The long answer is that Asian countries too have a fascinating tradition of music and instruments, it's only that in a world as culturally interconnected as today's she just chose piano. In my opinion, terms such as Western music, African rhythms, Orientalism (in the sense given by the French Impressionists), American syncopated music (in the sense given a century ago) have lost their original meaning for a long time, given that all them are spread and beloved all over the world.

Well, who is gong to keep traditional music alive? Isn't culture expressed in music, the same as language? Traditional Chinese music has a beauty all of its own. I have seen her many live many times. She is indeed a phenomenon. However, after seeing so many unbelievable performances, she has become such a show-off that I don’t bother to attend her concerts anymore. She played the most fantastic Hammerklavier sonata at Carnegie hall, leaving the audience breathless and moved by the breadth and profound power of Beethoven’s work…….then she ruined the whole thing by playing and encore. Really poor taste. She seems more interested in making her uncanny pianism the focus, not the music.

Imagine playing an encore! How incredulous 😂

The nerve of her to play an encore. She recently played the four Rachmaninov concertos over two concerts in Orlando. She had the unbelievable gall to play one encore after the first concert and THREE encores after the second. She is fabulous and without equal as far as I’m concerned.

@@thecatspajamas8918 I have seen that she played 4 or 5 concertos in one session, all of them in a different outfit, one more sexy and exiting than the other. As far as I am concerned she plays in a bikini sports top dropped on to the stage with a helicopter. And for all Grand piano lovers may the world be blessed with as many future baby piano players she wishes to bear. This is top sport of Olympic proportions. First see Yuja Wang play and then die. 🙏😇🌅🇹🇭🏖️🥰😎🍻🐥😍💋🍹🤩💫💥🌟💪💃🕺👸💐🌹🌺🌸💮🏵️🌻🌼🌾🌈🌅🌄🌠🌌🪐🌍🌎🌏 Bye bye for the nay-sayers

Luckily you don't have to attend any of her future concerts, and certainly don't have to tarnish your spectacular career by EVER visiting her performances on KZfaq.

The question: "Who is Yuja Wang"? is quickly answered: The worst-dressed musician of all time.

She dresses as she wants. Luckily she ignores these kinds of comments from simple-minded people who make judgments based on a person's clothes.

Poor Becker, so many successes for Yuja, so little intelligence from you. Sad to see you can't wait to pounce on video's of her with your sexist/racist German National Socialist agenda. I have fun engaging your trolls, kind of like 18th century people visiting Bedlam to laugh at the sad, mentally ill inmates. But-the first poster against your obsessive drivel here is correct; what possible real life value or relevance in 2023 does your crude and ignorant posting achieve? And what, by any stretch of a veracious imagination, does it have with the music itself and her incredible artistry in playing it? As is so well demonstrated here! 😉

@@Epinerf What a stupid comment, you devalue me even though you don't know me. Of course an artist cannot wear what she wants, a burka for example would be inappropriate and uncomfortable. But I am sure: Wang takes off more and more and puts on less and less fabric . I'm sure she will play naked soon.

@@beckerhanshermann8372 "What a stupid comment, you devalue me even though you don't know me."! Oh my, Hans/Karin/Max, we have all gotten to know you over the years of posting you monomaniacal/obsessive sexist/racist trolls over Yuja Wang! Do you really believe anyone is fooled or deluded by you? You keep alluding to her 'naked'; is it perhaps your frustration over not seeing her this way a root of your addictive behaviors? Sexually confused spirits would act that way...

And who is Becker Hans Herman to judge? Sometimes it is better to have people think ones self a fool than to open ones mouth and remove all doubt.
