In this video, we talk about the life and death of the skateboard magazine. How is it that the magazine was the gatekeeper to all of skateboarding or decades only to crumble in the 2000's. We take a look at the cost breakdown of a magazine, how they make their money, the skateboard video, and how they had to compete with social media and the internet.

In the 80's & 90's A Skate magazine was the only Affordable Media, they were tough, easily shared, could be rolled up and shoved in the glove box or staked on a shelf neatly and treated as an Investment. It was also an era where We had all grown up getting every ounce of info from book format, and so the unaffordable & Difficult to get VHS was still kind of "Junk food".

Transworld skateboard magazines were a thing of beauty. The lush and vivid colors, the detailed photos, the articles, in the sheer thickness of the magazine! I was beyond excited when I would receive them in the mail back in the late 90s and early 2000s. Wish I could go back in time.

Loved 411 VM. When I broke my ankle in 2000 and had surgery, my roommates made me an 8 hour 411 VM VHS so I could just put it in and be set for at least 8 hours without bothering them to go grab another movie from upstairs or something 😂 watched that thing at least 15 times in it’s entirety

Great to see R.A.D. (Read and Destroy) get pictured. That mag was awesome. Living in the UK Thrasher and Transworld were a bit too disconnected from our scene. Over here we were 1-2yrs behind what was going on in the US.

Next one on video mags? Man I used to check my mailbox twice a day for a new 411 when I was a kid. Miss that stuff so hard

I've got Thrashers 15th anniversary copy with the cover signed by Jake Phelps..it's also got various other signatures in the mag..I got it signed at the comp at Wembley called G97.

Sidewalk, for one of their final print outings, ganged-up the last few issues, and published them as a very thick "coffee-table" style tome. It's well worth tracking down, if you want to see where Sidewalk was at the end; and, its also a very stylish and well-crafted memento of a by-gone time.

I remember May 1992 when Questionable dropped. Kelly Bird said "dude, you'll wanna quit skateboarding after watching it". Such a rad Summer!

I own exactly one copy of Big Brother, the started fizzling right around when I started skating in the very late 90s, and were not easy to get copies of up in Canada at the best of times.
