Lazy Dog Farm

2 жыл бұрын

Another busy day in the backyard garden has us trellising peppers, checking on our softneck garlic, and telling you about our fig trees that are now for sale.
We'll start by showing you how we do the Florida weave trellis on our peppers, and we'll also add some pine straw to make the weed battle a little easier this year. We'll pull a few of our softneck garlic heads to see if they're close to being ready and tell you what we did to get to that point.
And finally, we'll tell you about our fig tree project that's been years in the making. We have close to 100 trees amongst 8 different varieties and we're so excited to be able to share them with our great viewers!

It all looks great, nice job. Up here in Vermont I'll be starting seeds in soil blocks this weekend that won't see the outdoor until memorial day weekend. I tilled two plots last week, then next day four inches of heavy wet snow, had a tree come down into one of the plots crushing a critter fence. Flurries again this morning. The garlic looks awesome, keep the videos coming, you're providing inspiration and envy to us northerners.

Well, phooey!!! You cannot ship fig trees to Washington state. My neighbor gave me cuttings from his Desert King tree, but I was hoping to add a couple more varieties - love figs for jams and sauces! On the soft neck garlic - good job on mimicking the cold stratification requirement. FILAREE FARM and SQUARED ROOTS FARM are the two places where I get my garlic - have had good luck with both! Best wishes from Kate in Olympia, WA - 7:20 am, 4/26/2022.

Hey Travis. Tomatoes, peppers, garlic, and the fig trees are looking awesome. As a container gardener I’m a huge fan of mulching all of my plants. I know it’s not something you do a lot of but I’d be interested in seeing you do a comparison test between mulching and no mulching. Maybe take a couple of tomato plants and mulch them, then compare how they do when the weather gets hot down in south GA.

Still having issues keeping the dog out of the garden. The fig trees also look wonderful! Unfortunately I don’t live in any of the states you can ship the trees to. Perhaps another time if possible to ship farther west. Little kids sports is always a fun event. Looking good around there!! I was waiting for you to say it!! Alright Alright Alright!! You done great with that garlic! Oh no 😂 surely he ain’t picking through the grass in LaLa land during the game 😂😂😂sounds like our kids!! Do you pinch off blooms on the pepper plants allowing them to grow until they reach your desired size when you want them to set fruit? Pine straw will also help hold moisture around your plants especially when you all get real hot down there!! (Thought I’d add this next bit) Pine straw is not thought to drastically increase soil acidity, making it bad for anything except acid-loving plants. While it's true that plants don't grow well under pine trees, the reasons are not due to soil acidity alone. According to research by the University of New Hampshire Extension, pine needles do not make soils more acidic when used as mulch in gardens. These assumptions stem from the observation that there are usually no plants growing in a pine forest among pine needles left on the forest floor. A major contributing factor to growth suppression is the dense root network near the soil surface that competes with other plants for moisture and nutrients. The needles themselves create a blanket that suppresses weed growth, but this is a desirable characteristic for mulches. Pine Needle Tannins Pine straw might not be bad for gardens, but pine needles do contain acidic tannins that can have some effect initially. When used around flower beds, freshly harvested pine needles contain more tannins than aged pine needles. Expect temporary acidic increase until the tannins have leached out after a few weeks, at which point the acidity levels out to roughly the average acidity of rainwater. It's true that the soil in pine forests is slightly acidic. Consider, however, that this soil is blanketed with heavy applications of pine needles over the span of decades. It takes decades to change soil pH. Leaching Tannins From Pine Straw If you want to avoid any short-term change in soil acidity, particularly when using the pine straw around plants that like alkaline soil, choose aged pine straw that has had the tannins leached from it. Leave relatively fresh pine straw in a pile and rinse it with water, allow it to dry for a few days, then rinse it again, repeating this process for a few weeks before use. Another option is to use the pine straw only around acid-loving plants or to use it around acid-loving plants at first, moving it to other plants after it ages. Acid-loving plants include strawberries (Fragaria spp.), lupines (Lupinus × hybrida) and hydrangeas (Hydrangea spp.), which grow in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 3 through 10, 4 through 8, and 3 through 9, respectively. Evergreen trees and shrubs that do well in acid soil include juniper (Juniperus spp.), which grows in USDA zones 3 through 9, and spruce (Picea spp.), USDA zones 3 through 8. Garden Benefits of Pine Straw A major benefit of pine straw, an organic mulch, is the effect of the organic matter as it breaks down in the soil. While pine needles don't add nutrients to soil, they do increase soil porosity so oxygen can better reach the roots. The fluffy material does not become compacted or form a crust on the surface like other organic mulches, making it easy for water to penetrate the mulch and reach plant roots. Pine needles break down more slowly than other organic mulches, requiring only about 1 inch of replenished material annually. The needles lock together easily, which means that, when coupled with water penetration benefits, the mulch stays in plays and won't wash away even when used on slopes. Lowe's reports that professionals recommend applying pine straw annually as a mulch.

Just moving from one success story to another. Good to see that you've hooked up with Drip Depot, a solid outfit. They carry an emitter called an "adjustable mini bubbler 6" stake" that will let you custom control the irrigation rate specifically to each fig tree from zero to 31 GPH. I see that you have a spectrum of tree sizes in the orchard and each size will benefit from just the right amount of water and nutrients. Best of luck launching the new fig nursery venture. Because we love garlic and moved here from the north, elephant garlic is the fun 15% of our crop, the regular (hard and soft neck, good medicinal) garlic is 85%. ~2000 bulbs.

The 2 bulbs you pulled looked good and appeared to be a good size. You talking about your kids soccer game reminded me of my friends' kids T Ball game years ago. About halfway through the game, his kid was wandering around the fence in the outfield playing with the grass. By the end of the game 3 more kids were just playing in the dirt of the infield. Several years ago I planted some soft neck garlic and I did the stratification also. The only thing I didn't do was mulch with straw and my garlic didn't get as big a bulb as yours. I'm probably going to stick to the elephant garlic if I like the flavor, I planted my first elephant garlic in the fall and they are mulched somewhat. I have a wild garlic leek that reproduces itself and it has a strong garlic smell and taste. If you ever get it started in the shade it thrives without any help from.

Elephant garlic is definitely the easiest. I do think the straw helps though.

Great video as always! Well looks like I'm going to have to try another one of your crops. Those garlic look great! I never have done anything with the garlic that grows here. It always does fine when I don't pay it any attention much like those random tomatoes that grew last year lol. I will have to go back to your videos on the garlic to get ready for them this fall. I ordered my fig from starks this year. Just 1 tree cause we'll again I'm the only one who will eat them. But I do want to get at least 1 more variety. (20 trees later...)loving those yellow tags! I've got an idea for those I will share as soon as I try it out for myself to make sure it works! Also I thought about taking pics of the trees and editing underneath to label the varieties in case I lose a tag, I can go to my flash drive to remind me what was what. My agrothrive looks like it will be delivered today! Just in time. Oh BTW I'm the one who sends you posts on Instagram, like the carrot harvesting and that beautiful wreath of flowers (I still have yet to find out what they are). To each their own on what works right? Go Tyty!

I was wondering if you were going to do a Florida weave on your peppers. I have five different types of peppers and about 70 different plants and it's starting to look like I need to do it myself! Love those cherry tomato cages but they look a little on the pricey side, love those fig trees! I planted 2 and they are doing so good. I may need to try and grab a couple of your variety. was going to ask about straight run instead of weave, especially for bigger plants that are harder to weave around. but you went ahead and answered my question before i asked. seems you dont like your stick with loop. i think needs longer stick with another loop screwed into base of the other side of stick. sticky business :) watch out with those pine needles, as pine tree litter is somewhat alleopathic. it's not about ph but the VOCs.

I know that you refrigerated the soft neck garlic, but do you also store the elephant garlic in the fridge prior to planting? My elephant garlic grew and made decent bulbs, but so far has not formed individual cloves. We had an extremely warm December here in Texas and pretty mild winter overall, so I'm not sure if that has had a negative effect on my crop or not.
@LazyDogFarm
@LazyDogFarm 2 жыл бұрын
I've never put the elephant garlic in the fridge prior to planting and it's always made cloves. Now with the elephant garlic, a lot of times it will just look like one big bulb until it dries. Once it dries, you'll be able to distinguish that there are indeed individual cloves.

Hello Travis, coming to you from Pooler Georgia about 10 miles west of Savannah ga. I just harvested a 4x8 bed of softneck garlic on April 20, they were planted on December 1,2021 called ( inchelium red ) it’s a softneck variety in the artichoke family. It’s also referred to as a gourmet garlic, the absolute best tasting garlic I have ever grown. I normally harvest this variety in the first or second week of may, never have they produced this early. I’m going to chalk it up to the nature safe 8-5-5 and agrothrive bloom version.

Man, you have a nice looking garden. You would literally laugh if you saw a picture of my garden. I want to have a nice one, but the frickin weeds are killing me!!! They are everywhere and out of control. This year I sprayed roundup about ten days before I planted. It killed them all but then many more grew back! I have had 5 back surgeries with 2 fusions. 1 neck surgery fusion. And I have CRPS, which is extremely painful. I have to garden to survive, due to being on disability, but the weeds won this year. I gave up! I have 4 and 5 foot weeds right now. Going to seed and making a huge disaster. I am so very sad. Only thing that survived the weeds is the sweet corn, potatoes, one yellow squash, a few green beans, a few tomatoes, and a few onions. The weeds took over the all the beets, all the peppers, all of the lettuce,, all of the eggplant, all of the radishes, all the carrots, most of the tomatoes, most of the onions, most of the squash, most of the green beans What, if anything, can I spray on my garden to help with weeds that is safe?? You would literally laugh if you saw a picture of my garden.

I'm a Canadian who lives 10 minutes away from a very well established Mennonite population. I understand very much how they live; my grandmother was a Mennonite. I have a lot of Respect for their way of life, but I wouldn't want to live quite that lifestyle every day. But, I do get my meat, eggs & many veggies for winter through them. I do realize that we definitely don't know the truth about where & how Covid came from. Yes, I believe it was science that Shouldn't have happened that has unleashed a Dangerous "gain of function" into the natural world. & don't doubt that Big Pharma was involved. But, I willingly got my 1st 2 jabs & I'm still happy I did. I'm glad it's worked well for me ~ cuz I know a number who had reactions. All different of course. But, I also know 2 people who caught covid in the First round, before the vaccines. Both have terrible Long Covid symptoms. All the people I know got covid After getting 'the jab' are currently just fine. Most people in my area, have just been moderately or mildly ill from it. We were very fortunate. Cuz my son's in-laws, who's extended family lives in another province, suffered over 25 losses to the original covid in 2020, between the 2 families. But.. the Amish & Mennonite population are not incorrect to be wary of our medical systems. I'm wary of our medical systems.. lol.. It's just wise.. But, I've had some strange & whacky things happen in my health over my 60 years ~ I probably wouldn't still be here if I had not relied on my medical system.. & I assure you ~ my family is glad I "tried a New treatment".. cuz they are glad I'm still here.. And I'm glad your Amish population faired well through the pandemic. I know it was not so kind to our Mennonite population, especially the elders. They lost quite a few, in the 1st year; especially considering their % to the rest of us. My take away from Covid.. I'd mask again in a heartbeat ~ really, it took zero effort for me.. might not be perfect, especially in close extended contact, but I do believe they help slow the spread of many viruses. I'd happily stay away from most, or gather outside if possible when gathering with larger family & friends groups. We were already doing that kind of thing, long before Covid was a word ~ because we have nurses & ECEs in our mix. We just hadn't realized what a true benefit it was before covid. We just new that we didn't catch things after gatherings when we did this. Whether this was natural or man-made, this virus Killed a Lot of people, harmed the World's economy, & science gave Mother Nature quite a bonus to use against us in the future ... .. well, unless we manage to wipe us out 1st.. which is a definite possibility too. Thanks for the video.. interesting other side to consider.. & stay safe, enjoy the simple life in Amish country (that comes with an incredible amount of work, lol.. I do know how much effort growing our food really is & why I'd rather pay the people who grew my food..) 😊
