When U.S. veteran and dystopian filmmaker David Crowley began his project "Gray State", he had no idea that it would become a five-year obsession, dragging his family in too. But by Christmas 2014, the project looked doomed to fail. Soon after... he and his family were found dead.

I once read one of the biggest reasons why family annihilators do what they do, is so that the family will not bear witness to their failures. It fits this case perfectly

The case not getting lots of media attention might be more to do with the media not wanting to talk about the potential for troops to come home with severe mental health issues, and being a threat to their loved ones or the general public. I imagine they would want to sweep that under the rug.

I think it’s more likely there is no rhyme or reason which cases spark a wildfire in the media. There are tons of cases on this channel that I can’t believe weren’t a big deal and then you got shit like Jodi Arias and I’m shocked that the media spent so much time on that case considering how non-interesting it is? In short, there is no cover up and it has nothing to do with a guy being an ex soldier. Hell, I never even heard of that mother and daughter who killed their entire family with anti-freeze until I saw a KZfaq about it.

I have to admit I chuckled on hearing that some posit that the handwriting matches David's because they "chopped David's hand off and used it as a prop to frame him." Because, y'know, your handwriting style is literally contained within your hand. On a similar note, if you cut someone's tongue out and place it in your mouth you'll then talk exactly like them. Should also try getting yourself Ludwig van Beethoven's skeletal fingers and you'll become an instant master on the piano.

The lengths these conspiracy theorists will go to to make the story fit their narrative is insane! Yeah, the guy didn't flip and murder his family, there's no way that happened! Someone must have broke in, killed them all, hung out in the house for days, staged the whole scene, including cutting off body parts, because THE GOVERNMENT!!! Yes! That's it! Can't just be a sad tragedy and loss of life because of mental health problems, must be someone is out to get him!!

Yes. So yes. They need to make the help a mandatory part of the end of service. Most of my friends are vets, and they say the same as you. One guy put it that he didn't even realize when his thinking was off, because while serving in a combat zone, it was really best if you were that way. So he never sought any of the help available, and wasn't sure how to get it, because no one explained it to him. Now he gets a lot of therapy, and does pretty good, but that's because there's a church group here that walks veterans through the process.

@@Beefystew101 Humans live in society, they have to in order to survive. And societies need some kinds of structure and organisation in order to work or then it's a free-for-all of chaos and violence. Which is why since the dawn of time humans grouped up and had leaders (heck, it's a thing for most animals, not just humans.) The main issue is that governments aren't a just entity, they're made of humans. And humans are full of flaws. They're greedy, full of desires for power and profits, stubborn, controlled by their ambitions and emotions. On top of that, societies got bigger and bigger (due to the ambitions of the leaders), making it impossible to correctly listen and help everybody. Humans need to live in society in order to survive and prosper, but, ironically, living with other humans is also like shooting ourselves in the foot. There's no actual good solutions because humans can think, meaning we all develop different needs, desires and opinions. For wild animals it's easier to live in order and relative peace because they have a dominant-submissive relationship in their group.

Got to love the irony of a guy who proclaims himself "all about freedom" who restricts his wife's movements, her friendships and eventually her contact with her own, seriously ill mother and her entire family. It doesn't surprise me that after being forced into situations of violence and developing PTSD as a soldier, he developed a lot of issues with the idea of losing control of his life. The fear of loss of control probably influenced both his views on government as well as his abusive behavior.

I am an acquaintance of a family member of David's and we talked a bit about what happened after the documentary about what happened was aired on TV several years back. You'll have to watch it to get the family's thoughts on it and they've been largely silent because it's not something they want to keep getting dragged up in. They've tried to move on from it. They don't blame David, he needed help. Help that the US government refuses to give the families of Vets after they force people to commit war crimes or leave them to die in a foreign country. There isn't a grand conspiracy that ended their lives, but the government played the lead role in creating this tragedy. A lot of the comments show that people quite frankly don't understand PTSD, especially from war and are merely obsessed with making snide remarks about how "controlling" David was.

It's very sad how our government treats it's vets. I've had plenty of friends and family in the service. They don't get the help they need. However, it obviously isn't an excuse for murder if he did it. He should've sought help, unfortunately. It's so tragic, all around.

I really just want to say that not all of us who deal with PTSD are this dangerous to anyone besides ourselves. What this man did disgusts me, and has the potential to keep a lot of people who really need help away from it at all costs. If you think you need help, or a very close, personal friend or family member tells you that you might need help, at very least consider it. I beg you to consider it not just for the people around you, but because you owe it to yourself to live the best life you possibly can. It's the one time when being selfish will benefit everyone, yourself included. Be well, everyone.

Absolutely I have PTSD great you different reasons nothing to do with the military and war. I am honestly the least dangerous person unless you mess with my kids then I'll be the most dangerous person. The military does not help its soldiers returning from active duty with their mental status. I truly believe we should do more to help the veterans....I believe we should help them before giving money to other countries.. we need to help our own first!!!

Obviously I am a fan of True Crime (you're awesome, by the way) but I feel as though I failed here somehow. I was born in Owatonna, grew up in Minneapolis through the "Murderapolis" years, and continue to live in Minnesota to this day, and I NEVER heard about this one! With the particulars of the subject matter of the film; it does create a bit of reasonable doubt. On the other side of the coin is; the PTSD and controlling behaviors. Which, seems to have been the most likely scenario. But, some aren't ruling out MK Ultra programming. But, I'm certain those people are labeled, "Conspiracy Theorists" just like David and a lot of his supporters were/are.

I was in a relationship with a man with intense untreated psychosis and schizophrenia and let me tell you being in that energy 24/7 started to effect me so much I started to experience psychosis as well. So I can relate to this lady. This poor woman and her child.

Psychosis can be contagious. There are studies that prove this. It’s SO easy to get sucked into a paranoid and negative person’s world. The aftermath of covid has created many paranoid types who all feed off each other. I believe he killed his family and himself. This hits close to home because my mother has cancer and my sister's husband, who is also in the military, has isolated her and my nieces from everyone they were close to...we have not physically seen them in 3 years.

Sorry to hear that. I have haven’t seen my nephews who were raised in our house for a & a half year due to their mother’s delusions. They are my mums only grandchildren and it’s truly heart breaking. I miss them and dream about them from time to time and wake up feeling so sad. Sending you love 💖

Him returning stuff to his friends was a sign.... a lot of people who take their own lives will often pass off items before committing the act. It's so heartbreaking he took his wife and daughter's lives. He definitely suffered from PTSD... did anyone else notice the weird way "forever" was written on the post-it note? Foarevur????

David was suffering from PTSD and paranoia. The way he isolated his wife is CLASSIC abuser behavior. He was mentally ill and his experiences in tge military amplified his condition. Plus his PASSION project was rejected? He viewed himself as failure yet wanted to be LEADER of his family the HEAD of the household who wasn't providing for his family and he HAD to be the center of his wife's universe. She was ill as well living with Stockholm Syndrome. Sad!

I know a man who went from a totally adjusted, happy, family man to suicidal in just a month's time. He had invested heavily in what turned out to be an exit scam. When he realized he was financially ruined, he stopped sleeping for over a week - no sleep at all - and went mad with anxiety. All it takes is the right buttons to be pressed and anyone can go mad.

Narcissistic tendencies n actually being narcissistic are 2 different things. In fact everyone in the world has some sort of narcissistic tendency/ies. It’s very ignorant to say that he was a narcissist because narcissists are not like this. Yes he showed tendencies but that doesn’t mean he was a full narcissist. It seems to me that he was jus mentally broken n consumed by his work from all the stress n etc., n as the video states, he slowly was worn down day by day. Till eventually all that stress n negative thoughts caused him to make an impulsive decision n kill his whole family including himself. Please educate yourself n learn to say things that are true instead of wat u think might be true.

The thing that stands out to me the most is the fact that the dog survived. If this was meant to be a professional coverup, I don't see the dog living. Barking attracts way too much attention, alerts the family and neighbors, and if you get bitten, you might leave DNA behind.

@@jovancukic1290sadly, that would make sense, seen far to many cases where the abused partner/spouse says “I’m leaving” or “I want a divorce” and they get horrifically beaten and barely survive, or just killed. This is why I’ve always believed it’s much safer for the abused spouse to make an escape plan and do it quietly when it’s safe, because abusive men like David tend to get more and more violent.

I'm not in that situation but if I was I would find it hard to leave as it's simply my house, my mortgage, my everything & to get him to leave physically would be extremely difficult because he'd then know that you want to end the relationship. I've worked on movie sets and if you can't delegate and you mix in some mental health issues...you'll 100% have a nervous breakdown and/or find an addiction. Too many moving parts for one person. It can be extremely overwhelming when you've got money/time restraints/deadlines/location & equipment issues/delays that cost time/money. Mix *YEARS* of sleep deprivation, continuously pondering film issues, hyper-focusing on conspiracy ideas and it's literally a mental disaster waiting to happen. He may have seen this as a final hail-Mary to get eyeballs on his film. I'm surprised he lasted as long as he did. *It's a shame that his family had to be punished for his inability to reign in his obsession.* 😓

Good Lord. The lack of empathy and education when it comes to mental health is just astounding. My advice would be to spend less time in the KZfaq comment section and go out and volunteer with the mentally ill. We always need volunteers like myself and my sister. Then maybe people might have a better understanding. That's what we need. More educated people in the field and less knee jerk reactions from people with no experience.

I believe he had a mental break and killed his family. His odd behavior like writing on the walls was manic behavior. With his history, stress, pressure, issues with family, and paranoia, its the perfect recipe for what happened.

I was thinking his symptoms of depression, possible mania, and paranoia made him a contender for Schizoaffective Disorder. It's not an excuse, it's a possible explanation, that's all. People in other comments are arguing about it a lot. All we can do is theorize, and I'm okay with that. I guess other people aren't.

That's really sad considering it was just using it's survival instinct and lost it's owners too :( strange how the killer left the dog alone and strange it didn't whine/howl and alert people in the subsequent days. Strange neighbours didn't notice no one coming out for 3 weeks!

I think after experiencing a high level of stress and feelings of failure, it affected his mental health which led him to sacrifice himself and his family thinking that was the only way he had left to get his message out.

I hate that some people want to almost excuse his behavior because he was a vet and had PTSD. He sounds like a classic abuser to me, all the hallmarks of it, he just happened to also have PTSD. And it’s nothing new that people stay in these dangerous relationships until they’re killed. So sad

The diagnosis of PTSD isn't due to some rage, control or "negative" behaviour. The key diagnosis is a BIG change in themself. Example, someone who spent every day outside, socialising now remains locked in and vice versa. Someone who is violent, now hates blood or physical contact and again vice versa. These behaviours can change over time, negative and positive. I'm not sure if this man was officially diagnosed and I do not excuse his actions for one second. But if it was PTSD that in itself is a contradiction as to what you stated. It's by no means your fault, there should be more awarenes of this so hopefully it may save more lives and futures. Heart breaking what happened there. RIP to them all, especially the wife and child.

Too many people were already aware of the "conspiracy" theories he was putting into his movie for there to be a concern for him making it. I don't think anyone is to blame for their deaths but David, himself. He was so oppressive with his beautiful wife yet she seemed totally infatuated with him. Very sad situation. David had issues, and seems prior to the war, due to his control over his wife. Prayers for their families. TBH, I think this may have happened even without him working on the movie. Sadly, his wiring was a little tangled.

I got sucked into that world thinking he was murdered by the government. I have woken up since then and Im glad I got out before the former. No doubt in my mind that he definitely did it. I'm ex navy who helped start oef on oct 7th. In the past few years I have been diagnosed with PTSD. I'm glad I got pulled out of that kind of thinking. Mine is controlled by meds and weed, want to try microdosing shrooms to see if actually helps me.

In the 90s and early 2000, TV series were only filmed if the story wasn't good enough. He grew up with this stereotype. Nowadays TV series are really successful and more liked than a film.

Still, he supposedly was all about spreading this message that he considered so critical for all Americans to know about, and TV would have absolutely accomplished that, so I think his ego got the better of him. Although he also obviously had serious mental health issues that probably played a big role.

Here's hoping it promotes a legitimate discussion and not a flame/hate war. While I haven't scrolled extensively through the comments, I do find it interesting that everything I have seen has focused primarily on the latter part of the video and what he did (or potentially didn't) do. I've yet to see anything on the political side of things, which on the one hand is good, but 9 years later, this country has arguably gotten worse. I'm pretty much a pacifist myself-I say pretty much because I've honestly never been in a situation in my adult life where I've been tempted to use violence to solve it. I'd like to think that, even if we were in a "Purge" situation (the movie) or some other evil thing happened, I'd still not become violent towards others, but I don't honestly know. I don't condone violence though, and I have sworn an oath to myself to not pass the circle of violence, hate, racism, and fear on to the next generation. I may only be one individual, but it dies with me. Having said that though, I find myself more than a little scared because I do consider myself to be progressive when it comes to politics. I've had many a thought over the last few years... lets call it since 2016 or so... that we desperately need major reform in all areas of the political arena. Congress is far too old in my opinion, as is the Supreme Court, and heck, even Biden is too old to realistically run again. Then there's the corruption that is rampant throughout the system, money in politics, way too many judicial decisions that punish people differently for the same crime to reasonably say that there isn't a racial bias in the courts... I could go on. Further, I do believe that we SHOULD rise up against this corruption and restore the government to what it should be. To quote the Declaration of Independence: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.--That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, --That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security." I do not and will not condone violence, and we have shown in the past that changes can be made without resorting to bloodshed. Rosa Parks and Martin Luthor King Jr. are two individuals who come to mind that have done just that. It's just scary, hearing Adrian talk about David's political views and I'm like... we should have done that years ago. Again, I would emphasize doing it as non-violently as possible, ideally with no blood having to be shed at all.

Yeah. It was never easier. With algorythms serving you videos based on your preference, all it takes is one whacky one to have a whole list of collaborating ones.. You slip into echo chamber so easy.. From 2015-2018 I fell into imminant climate catastrophe, that predicted that by now, 2023 we would already have billions of ecological refugees.. Basicly the end of our civilisation. I still don't think we will pull it through, since Capitalism caused it and I don't see this all powerful economic system going anywhere. Also hoping that'll capitalism will solve the very same problem of suicidal trajectory, that capitalism caused is naive. Neither I see much chance of changing it. .. but at least I don't plan to panic before Article stays ice free during winter.. But, just imagine being absolutely convinced that you maybe have 5 more years of normal-ish world. It would be so easy to just take that as excuse to just give in to all your vices, and live it up.. That's when I found out that even though I have been OK with my own mortality and all those who I love, I was very much not OK with our world turning into Mad Max by 2050.. Also had enough common sense and knowledge to make a safer bet of trying to live like there could be 20-30 years more of "OK" world, rather then 5 and being wrong.. I do empethise with all the poor souls deep into doom, preppers and similar echo chambers.. That is no life to live.

This one reminds me a lot of Chris Benoit's case. Even now, 16 years after his crimes, there's tons of people who still mantain that he didn't do it and who keep coming up with increasingly convoluted theories on what really happened, mostly just so they can still support the man without carrying all the horrible stuff he did.

However, I completely understand why you hold this position, because it's the same position that New Jack held, as New Jack also had CTE and was a functional addict and yet he despises men who beat women owing to his violent upbringing and issues with authority and Paternal Father Figures. Because Adrian (the uploader of this very video) was unnecessarily soft on Benoit, as a matter of fact, Adrian was also unwarrantedly soft on McSkillet, who was a fucking murdering cunt who killed a mother and her child because he couldn't prey on people's problems with gambling anymore.

So... I'm a local. Literally live 5-9 minutes away from the family's house in a neighboring city, and I remember this case. I didn't expect to see this case covered, but I'm glad you did. It's definitely one of the ones that sticks to your mind, but I do remember that the local news didn't really cover it for long.

These kinds of cases are difficult to draw any conclusion on. If I was to guess, though? David and his family were struggling. He was internally dealing with military horror and failed film career. I think he snapped and ended it all together because of the aspects surrounding the case. Great video as always!
