The title alone gets a thumbs up for the video. I think that bikes for most people took a wrong turn when they became race-only machines for race-only personalities with race-only bodies and race-day pocketbooks.

Back in the 1970's I rode vintage steel bikes everywhere here in Canada and on all kinds of surfaces. That's all we had back then. Did the job. If you were lucky you had decent tires that would help with avoiding punctures. Thank for this view of your beautiful area.

I love my mid 1980's Trek 400! We have graded dirt canal roads here and that old bike is right at home on them.

Beautiful! I love my 1990 Miyata Triple Cross for my gravel rides. Built it up with Tiagra 4700 groupset and newer wheels with 40mm Schwalbe G-One tires, it's comfy and nice :)

I ride MTBs... & every time I ride the bike park, there is always at least 1 person with a fancy, broken carbon fiber frame. Never seen anyone brake a steel or aluminium frame on the trails.

ride an 87 peugeot triathlon that probably had 600 original miles on it when I bought it. Only thing replaced non period correct is tires and tubes. It is BEAUTIFUL to ride. mavic, 105, chromoly, original slotted shoes. A weird and wonderful challenge and experience.

Thank you for sharing this video... 3 days ago i picked up my first ever vintage bike... its a Steel Frame Centurion Team Leader bike... from what i can gather it was built in May 1988.. May i add, it is also my very first Down Tube Friction Shifter experience... I was wondering where i could ride this bike since i live on a group of volcanic islands in the middle on the South Pacific Ocean, but after seeing what you and your frineds do i am seriously contemplating making this bike my go to bike... I will place 700 x 28 or 30 puncture proof tires on the bike and see how that goes... Thanks again for this

Bianchi, Motobecane, Fuji, Panasonic, Peugeot and the bike that started it all - 1971 Raleigh Gran Prix (all original) vintage steel hang in my bike cave. Love them, ride them - though mostly just look at the Raleigh remembering what it felt like to be ten years old, on a bike out of earshot of my mom on my way to get ice cream.

So encouraging, I found a good motorcycle deal riding my vintage Bianchi out to the last road in the county, I may make it my Holiday Bike for that O/O°

Love Stuarts Alpina. It brings back so many great memories of living in Jo'berg. I bought my first ever 'proper' bike which was an Alpina with 105 groupset from Westdene Cycles. I used to ride everyday to work from Florida Glen to Edenvale on that bike. Hardly any traffic in those days and used to greet Wally Hayward most mornings as he jogged by in Bedford Biew. Im now sitting freezing my ass in UK and miss those days cruising through Yeoville and Hillbrow. Still very regularly riding some nice classic bikes though!l!

Despite me having owned every bike possible, the best bikes I have ever ridden were a Basso Loto with Oria tubing and an Eddie Merckx Strata OS.

Hi, I am sitting on my sofa in Surrey, UK feeling very nostalgic. I left SA 21 years ago and seeing that Peugeot Mirage and Clasique made me remember lusting after them in Westville Cycles KZN. My parents had a Hanson tandem, and Alpina’s were always very cool. My dad had a Peugeot Galaxy which took pride of place in his bar. I suspect it was a rebranded Vitus or Alan... Do you have any knowledge on Benino bikes? I had a blue and white one, my 13th birthday present I think it had Tange steel tubing and Shimano Sante which I assume was quite low end, I got my dads hand me down 105 groupset when he upgraded his with internal cable brake levers. I would love to know some history on them. I thought at the time it was an Italian bike but I suspect it was just an Italian sounding name. So nice to see those bikes are being cared for. I am still riding and think bicycles are one of man’s greatest inventions - It’s hard to be in a bad mood after a couple of hours riding a bicycle. You earned a new subscriber

Exactly what l use my old miyata for too anywhere and everywhere ,also have room for bigger than the 38x700c l use now !! l use modern components and get the best of both worlds l think :) PS l have rim brakes too

Cool . Yes, all I have are old or "vintage" steel bikes. We have two 1987 bright yellow Schwinn touring Paramounts (another for my wife) from the Waterford, Wisconsin factory that are both three by 7's (one is converted from a 3x6). Both are made from Columbus tubing. We think those were the last of the Paramount touring frames ever made before the Paramount factory started focusing on racing frames only. I have a 1983 Mondia 2x6 with Reynolds 531 tubing. By far my prettiest frame. I have a Bianchi Osprey 3x7 steel bike for fishing and gravel. I have a Schwinn Paramount Series 50 Mt Bike from 1994 with Prestige tubing. And lastly, I have a Team Marin from 2000 made of Columbus Zona tubing. (My wife also has a 1970's-'80's red Celo Europa 2x6 of Columbus tubing.) The bikes I ride regularly all have fork tube extensions (or Zoom stems on the older bikes with quill type headsets) with 4 inch riser bars to raise up the handle bars for my arthritic neck. All of these bikes are mounted with Mt. bike break levers and shifters as well because being up so high puts my hand farther away from the old down tube shifters. So having them on the handle bars is safer and more efficient. Go vintage steel.---!

I still ride 70s, 80s, 90s steel bikes. Tried carbon for 25 yrs and 8 broken frames. Glad I kept the old fleet. In 2015 I added a Ritchey Road Logic . Has that well made steel ride. 2 yrs ago added a steel Salsa for gravel. I have 2 aluminum gravel and cross bikes. No more carbon. It stays indoors on a trainer . When it breaks I have less chance of getting hurt Steel is real. The modern carbon shapes are ugly to me. Ride on!

Great video. I.love vintage bikes. I bought a Benotto vintage this year. It has no innertubes so flat worries..glued on..i love this bike..took it into a bike shop...he said sell it ..you cant switch wheels get a new cassette gears or get part for anything that breaks. Sad

1983 Biachi Limited......Ishiwata 022, Suntour Cyclone GT2, SR, Araya, Dia-Compe.......23 pounds and it's pretty.......it's older than most riders I meet.

I have a 1980 Fuji - was about $400.00 when I bought it. Still have it - just can't let it go. I needed to get rid of stuff for a big move from New Jersey to New Mexico - was thinking of giving the bike away, but after watching this video I'm glad I didn't. Great to see guys my age (you're all a bit younger than me, tho - haha) riding well-cared for vintage bikes. 10 or 12 gears is tough on up hills - but we all did it alot when that was all we had. Thanks for the ride!!! I subscribed.

Rebuilt my 1984 Miyata 710 with new Shimano 105 components. Man, does it ride nice - I’ve put about 1500 km on it so far. All road, though. Not sure what tires I could fit on it for gravel.

I wish I still had my 1977 Ferdi Kessels 531,Reynolds TDF road racing bike frame #32. It was campy and cinelli components and had a 39.5 inch wheelbase. It rode like a dream. On a positive note I did recently get given a Vitus 792 mark I race frame like Sean Kelly raced on back in the 70's. The frame angles and wheel base look to be almost identical to my Kessels frame. I wonder what it will ride like since it's aluminium ? Anyone have experience with one?

I ride vintage steel bikes and yes they are less stiff thus more comfy for long rides ON ROADS (pavement, dirt roads or cobbles)....but I still can't see the point of it discrediting gravel bikes (because I own one too). Just because one of the riders had a tech issue on his bike , that also surely happens on vintage bikes; that's just unfair...for what it's worth, any gravel rider could laugh at roadies having a pinch flat or slipping on mud! First main reason is that though vintage steel bikes can offer more comfort but these bikes can't have wider tires - wider tires with less pressure (40psi) could offer more comfort than a 25c (90psi) road bike tires. Second, just like any roadie, you can't ride those skinny tires on skinny rims on rougher terrain as any well setup gravel bike could. Surely, you'd get a pinch flat early on. Your video only showed you riding easy roads...try the woods and see if your vintage bikes could better a gravel bike. Third, and maybe the best advantage of a gravel bike would be the wider and more aggressive tires which are great for muddy sections, single tracks and grassy terrain. The disc brakes could offer more stopping power and control on slippery sections where I know very well that any road bike would fail...I know because I've ridden them. I love both type of bikes but roadies are limited to easy roads...gravel bikes are more flexible. This video may be great in all it's aspect but I guess you're just being biased. It's always better to have an open mind before we comment on anything.

Out of interest how does an old steel vintage bike compare with a gravel bike for sturdiness? I’d get a vintage bike for my daily commute if I knew for sure it would handle the ups and downs on curbs. Thanks 🙏
