Sedge is the teacher. My dad could use a plane. I kept his #4. But planes, except for the edge planes, I mess up using them all the time, I do keep trying to learn. One days, I'll get one of those beautiful thin strips. Sandpaper attached to MDF or Melamine coated wood, is my choice for chisel sharpening. A good piece of MDF with some green honing past works as well.

Glad you like the plane! I've never seen the paper method for setting the blade. I'll be giving that a try. 🙌

A good example is a good example. Following your review I've just ordered the plane :) - thank you for sharing! I also took the opportunity to read specs of the tool , especially the blade. And I learned that they are made out of M2 HSS steel. That steel contains Molybdenum, Tungsten and Vanadium among the others, and as such shouldn't be sharpen or polished standard way. Standard aluminum oxide materials won't bite those alloy elements, they'll only eat softer steel around, leaving uneven grainy surface. So only diamond wheels or paste should be used for that purpose. The whole thing is well described in an excellent book "Knife Deburring - Science Behind the Lasting Razor Edge" by Dr. Vadim Kraichuk, who also runs YT channel Knife Grinders Australia. Couldn't recommend more (the pdf book is ~9CAD)! All the best! Stay sharp - insane sharp! D.

Thank you for the video, question: on the Tormek, at which angle did you sharpen the blade? Did you honed a micro bevel or just kept at 25? Thanks for all your great support
@sedgetool

25 degrees on the Tormek and did not put a micro bevel

Sedge we carpenters and joiners do not put our planes on the flat, my father 7 year apprenticeship 93 year old now drummed it in to me on the side you dull the blade, it pains me to see this sacrilege

Lie Nielsen all the way, these Chinese planes are all made by the same company and marketed under many brand names, they are hit and miss, sometimes they work well, other times not so much. Lie Nielsen is top dollar but you get what you pay for

I have both Lie Nielsen AND Veritas from Lee Valley - both being made in North America and very, very high quality. As to having multiple blades with a variety of angles…meh… Some of it is tool manufacturers telling you this so they can sell more stuff. I generally have two for bevel up; 22 ish and 35 ish because I sharpen freehand. For my bevel down, I have three No. 4’s. Two are pre war Stanley’s one set up to scrub and the other at 25 to 30 degrees for everyday work. My Lie Nielsen No. 4 and 4 1/2 are set up with a slight back bevel to give me a York pitch.

We are glad that the tools you like are working for you. We just want to support more people woodworking. We've heard a lot of feedback that many hobbyist makers and woodworkers face financial barriers to getting into woodworking or getting all the tools they need. We are proud to say that our tools perform and are at a price point that is more accessible to many people. While maybe some tools are made in the same factories in China and marketed certain ways, we are not. We are the first hand tool line by Timbecon and we are proud to say that we spent a lot of time researching and finding a manufacturer that has not made planes before but has experience making precise tools. This has resulted in a high quality tool that is simple, uncomplicated, and a pleasure to use.

@@melbournetoolcompany my bad, I thought it was another version of the quangsheng planes. With that being said, there are plenty of vintage planes available for people who can't afford the top end planes. I understand you're running a business using cheap Chinese labour, it's just a business model I don't agree with for many reasons.
