YOU COME AT THE KING, YOU BEST NOT MISS!!!
Hey everyone! With Radical Bowling's recent release of the Rattler, there was a lot of drama between the Radical/7-Brands fans and MOTIV Nation. The MOTIV folks were claiming that the Rattler was a copy of the incredibly successful Venom Shock. (And to be fair, some of the 7-brands people were egging it on a bit for sure).
So I thought it would be a good idea to do a comparison between these two lower differential balls, and while I was at it, I threw in the IQ Tour as well, because you can't talk about low diff balls without talking about the IQ Tour.
This video is the results of my comparison between these three bowling balls. Hope you like it! If you did, please LIKE and SUBSCRIBE - It really helps my small little channel out! :D

This actually makes a lot of sense. Look at the shape of the 3 cores. IMO, the Rattler core and Gear core look reaaaaaaaaaal close. So since the Shock cover is stronger, it's going to read the lane earlier than the Radical ball. Now, the IQ is a completely different shape, and if I may quote Mo, "Core shape dictates motion". So since the core is more of a lightbulb shape, making the core without that bottom flip block makes it high RG and more elliptical. So that bottom piece must make up for the volume of the core. When that starts to transition, you're going to see more of a rounded shape because not all the weight is closer to the center of the ball. Couple that with a Storm cover that is going to retain energy, you're going to get more flare. Great video! I can't wait to get my hands on a Shock in a few weeks.

As an owner of the VS, I can honestly say that your thoughts on it are absolutely true. My rev rate makes my Shock come in extremely hard in the backends and I have it sanded to 5000 grit. It's drilled 25x6x10 and even with that layout it doesn't help 😅. Been seriously considering replacing it with the Rattler since I've seen in other videos besides yours that its cover isn't as aggressive than the Shock and I believe it would seriously help me late in the game. Thanks for the complete breakdown on each ball. I'm sold on the Rattler now.

I have a hard and fast rule for pin-up layouts on symms: max distance from center of thumb to pin is 6.75", (90 degrees to the X-axis). This results in the lowest post drilling RG, highest diff, and highest intermediate diff for a given pin-pap distance. The dual angle system is excellent for measuring layouts, but the variation in spans among bowlers makes it difficult to specify the minimum effective, flare safe VAL angle for a given bowler. For my span and PAP, 33 degrees is max flare and I usually combine it with 3.75-4.25" pin-PAP for playing deep inside angles. Love your ball reviews. This channel is a hidden gem, and certainly one of the best on youtube.

Thanks very much - The last part of your comment means a lot to me, truly. It's hard for smaller channels like mine to leave its mark when surrounded by Touring Pros and pro shop guys who spend all day in bowling centers, people who are just interested in clickbait videos, and others who are more interested in making videos than they are in having something useful to say. Regarding the layout, putting the pin up that high is relatively new to me. I decided I'd try it out because I wasn't having much success with lower diff balls (I've went through 4 Venom Shock layouts and I'm on my third IQ Tour - the one from this video being the best one so far) because they didn't flare enough for my ball speed. But at the same time, if I just lower the pin to PAP distance, they'd either just flare too much and "flare-spin" down the lane and never corner, or sometimes just hook too early and die. I needed a way to get them to flare enough to recover, but also with the recovery being fast enough to make up for my ball speed. Slower bowling balls generally don't work too well for me, which presents its own set of problems, obviously. It's actually funny, this weekend I showed a video of me bowling to someone who hasn't seen me bowl in a decade and he said "wow, it's amazing how much slower you throw the ball now" - I'm like ARE YOU KIDDING ITS STILL TOO FAST hahaha

@@Swish710 Your delivery is definitely a good demonstration of the true ball characteristics. I will be sending my customers to your channel for doing their research. I tend to find the 4" range of pin-PAP to roll forward less and have a more controllable midlane than the 5" range. For example, I have two Hustles in my bag: one with the pin at 5.25" and the other 3.75". The shorter pin tends to have a more defined skid-hook-roll pattern (benchmark territory), and it corners much better from inside angles. The longer pin has worked well with surface when playing parallel on shorter light volume house shots and/or sport patterns. The Track Sensor is one of the most effective balls I have right now for longer high volume house shots. 60x3.75x33. Skids clean almost to the end of the pattern, flares 4+" on the backend, and hits like a truck on a 41' 26 unit house shot.
@Swish710
@Swish710 Жыл бұрын
@@byronfranek2706 that's pretty interesting because for me it's the opposite. Anything 5" or more gives me a much more defined breakpoint, I'm guessing because they flare less and save more energy, where anything less than that usually is rounder, probably due to the increased flare. Obviously, it depends on the specific ball characteristics, but my general rule for me personally has become if I want the ball to have a more defined breakpoint and roll more forward on the backend, I go over the middle finger which puts it at around 5 1/8, and if I want something that hooks more but is rounder, I go over the ring finger, which is about 4 3/4 or so. Anytime I drill anything around 3 3/4 pin to PAP, the ball just flare-spins the entire way down the lane and never actually hooks.

Fantastic video, outstanding work. I personally have thrown the IQ and Shock and both are great balls. With that said, I have never been able to carry inside 15 with either ball. To my eye the IQ shapes better than the Shock and the flare explains that, but both balls work. I could easily see both balls in same bag. To me the Rattler is more IQ than Shock, so you don’t need all three.

I enjoy your channel and love watching unbiased reviews on balls. Too many staffers and people being paid to hype up every release, rather get the unbiased true opinion! Keep up the great work! I just picked up a Venom Shock after being told I need a benchmark ball. I have been debating a layout to put on it but seeing as I am a lower speed bowler at about 15.5-17mph depending how dry it is and roughly 330 revs, I would think I probably want a longer Pin-Pap and a shorter val angle to help push the ball down lane more? Not sure if my thinking on this is correct, I was thinking maybe a 5" x 25 or 5" x 30? I don't want the ball to be too snappy on the back end but if the cover is that strong, I would guess with my speed/rev that a more rounded control/smooth layout will probably roll too early for me and have nothing on the backend. Does this sound about right to you?
@Swish710
@Swish710 Жыл бұрын
Longer Pin to PAP sounds good, but do keep in mind that a smaller VAL angle will put the pin up high, and the higher up a pin is, the more the ball will flare. More Flare = earlier and sharper hook. Less flare (pin lower) = later and smoother hook. You might have to change the box surface of the ball and put a little shine on it to make up for the higher pin (not saying 100% for sure, but just something to keep in the back of your mind, just in case). Also, thank you very much for the compliment, I appreciate that you like my channel. I should tell you though that I am now, in the time since I made this video, a Track Staffer. However, that will not change my video format. I'm not here to hype balls up. I just want to give information -- what a ball does, what types of bowlers might benefit from it, what types of lane conditions it might work better on. Still the same video format, I'll just only be doing videos for balls from the Brands of Brunswick. I do hope that won't turn you off the channel because I do think my video format is still different and unique. Because you are right - too many people out there want to tell you every single release is the best ever, balls are "special,: yada yada yada. I don't see that as my role or something I even want to do. I just want to give information and let people make their own decisions and judgments. Thanks for watching!

I don't generally deal in descriptors like "better" or "worse" - every ball is better for someone than another. I prefer to use more descriptive terms like "earlier" or "more angular" or things like that, so people get a better idea of what the characteristics and differences are from one ball to another, so it helps them pick the ball that is better for them. 😁

Remember, undrilled numbers mean nothing. Its the numbers after drilling. The only company that shows the drilled numbers is Radical. All 3 of those are great pieces. I thought your video was a very honest description of each. Great job.
@Swish710
@Swish710 Жыл бұрын
Thank you. And yes, I understand that drilled numbers are more important, but it's also not possible for any of us "regular people" to know what the drilled numbers are in the vast majority of cases. And while Radical lists drilled numbers, they only do so for a couple of "recommended" layouts. You and I both know that a *lot* of bowlers don't use those exact "recommended" layouts. I certainly don't, I'm guessing you don't either, and I'd guess that it's a majority of the time when you consider all bowlers and all pro shop operators. So obviously the drilled numbers are different and unknowable, because it's impossible to list drilled numbers for every single possible layout. The number of possible layouts is infinite. And that's not even to mention what if the bowler is using a ball from a different company that doesn't list drilled numbers. So while undrilled numbers are much less informative, they can at least give a bowler a starting point to get a feel for what the general characteristics of the core are. And that's better than nothing.

The red/green/black one from back in the day? I used to. That was definitely a while ago. Don't have it any more. I can give a comparison from memory if you want - it's a decent comparison, but I'd say the IQ Tour Nano had a bit more downlane motion. The RG was higher, and saved a little more energy. Plus don't underestimate how strong the cover on the Venom Shock is - that's a big part of why it's such a versatile ball. It is easily a counterpart to the Nano cover.

@Swish710
@Swish710 Жыл бұрын
The various ball manufacturers all create ball motion and desired reaction in different ways. Those "flip pucks" can increase differential and RG by drawing some of the density away from the center of the core, but it's not the only way to do so. I wouldn't consider it more special or effective when one company does their thing as opposed what another company does.

Maybe, but as you can see from the video here, the IQ isn't really that much weaker than the venom, just a little longer. You could lay it out weaker and that could work, but it might not. @@michaelkoch603 Unfortunately there are not very many of them right now at all. As a result, I tend to look for balls with covers that although not weak, are very clean through the first 40 feet of the lane. They save energy well. I think my favorites right now are the Track Paragon Hybrid and the Hammer 3-D Offset Attack. They have worked the best for me this league season and in tournaments. Neither of them are weak balls by any stretch of the imagination - both have a lot of hook and hitting power to be sure - but they are very clean and don't do anything unpredictable in the first 40 feet or so of the lane, which is what I'm looking for. Because lane conditions have so much more oil now than they used to, looking for weak cover/strong core probably isn't that viable right now anyway for most conditions. So clean cover/strong core is probably what I need to start focusing on more (unless I'm bowling on a longer pattern or one that has a ton of oil, of course).

Does putting a pin that high in general make a ball flare more? Or that’s based off your PAP?
@Swish710
@Swish710 3 ай бұрын
It's actually both. So for example, if you have two balls with a 5" pin to PAP, but on one the pin is way up in Narnia and the other the pin is below your fingers, the pin up ball will flare more. Drilling the ball with the pin up high increases the differential of the ball, which makes it flare more. Think of it as a tuning knob. You decide how much flare you want by pin to PAP, and then you tweak it by going higher for more flare, earlier hook and sharper backend, or going lower for less flare, later hook and smoother backend.

@@iceman5117 I'm not a pro bowler, but i like the idea of your 4th ball being symmetrical since you've already have two asymmetrical big balls with one of each solid and pearl. The spy being plastic bowl will be good for drylines and heavily transitioned. I haven't rolled the stinger yet, but it looks very interesting and I've been checking it out myself. Some of the decision about which ball to get depends on your reverie and if you're one-handed or two-handed and if you prefer a smoother rounder hook or a later more angular hook. The stinger looks a little bit cleaner and more anger and more reactive to the dry on the outside. The ocean vibe for me was best after I took a 4,000 grit Avalon pad to it. It's a smooth arching motion and doesn't overreact the dry very predictable. I haven't rolled this one either. But a lot of people like the rotor grip hustle Royal grip hustle bowling ball. Hustle camo and hustle wine are also for light to medium oil for half shots and I'm dryer house shots... There's really a lot of choices. There's even stuff like hyped, solid and hyped pearl. My biggest fear is going too weak. I'd like to start bowling tournaments, but at the moment I'm just bowling league, where this will be a second or third ball out of the bag during late night transition, either when I have a bunch of crankers on the other team burning up the line, or when the house lays it out short and dry, both situations where I would normally switch back to the hellcat and play up the middle. I'm afraid balls like the sensor and hustles may not be able to cover enough boards, where the scorpion sting, vibe, kinetic black ice, ripcord launch, etc would

Rattler looks like it just falls into pocket to me. A lot of radical balls kinda look like that hence my recent obsession and urge to buy em.

I found it a nice middle ground between the early and forward Venom Shock and the clean and round IQ Tour. Sometimes either of those two balls isn't right, but is close, and the Rattler has fit in well to make that reaction happen.

Hit the Rattler with a 2000 pad and it will raise some eyebrows. The cover is not weak.

I don't recall saying the cover was weak. Did I?

@@Swish710 I guess I inferred it because you said the Venom's cover is so much stronger.

@@cardinalcopium5088 Stronger is relative, right? For example, the Hammer Envy is stronger than the Cuda Powercor, but the Cuda is not weak by any means.

@@Swish710 funny thing is my Cuda is stronger than my Envy

@@cardinalcopium5088 I should probably rephrase that and say earlier, not stronger. If the ball is too early it can use energy too quickly and not cover as many boards. Strength is a vague term, and I should use it less.

You obviously don't know what the swing means, so instead of being insulting, maybe you should ask so you can learn something.
