One of the thing that occurs to me about the plot "we assumed this person was a supervillain but we're confused because it turns out they are really nice" is it indicates to me that not only is this show written for children and people who think like children, but it's giving them role models who think like children and doesn't want its audience to ever advance beyond being children. What adult reasons "this person can't possibly be up to something; they're nice!"? What does "nice" even mean? What a superficial way of assessing someone's capability of doing harm is seeing how "nice" they are! It's almost like they're aware they are chatacters in a melodramatic tv show. It's almost like "We thought he was a baddie but then we heard him laugh and it wasn't maniacal, so we ruled it out!"
@WhosViews8 күн бұрын
Yes indeed. They have watered much down and character is one. They/RTD seem to feel tha children must be wrapped in cotton wool. Another huge difference between PROPER WHO and this version. Whatever it is.

I get what you're saying, but I took it more as a joke against the cliche that when the cameras are off behind the scenes they're unpleasant. Which happens a lot with TV villains.

What kind of villain feels the need to use a portmanteau or anagram to hint at the villain's return? How does that help the villain's plan at all? Makes the villain look either foolish or crazy...

EXACTLY! Minions may play with this crap, but SUTEKH????
@markpostgate25519 күн бұрын
It's clearly inspired by "Dracula AD1972" in which Dracula, having been resurrected hundred years later decides to use the pseudonym Johnny Alucard. It was dumb then and it's dumb now! The Riddler can do this; that's his schtick and either he secretly wants to be caught because he is actually proud of his crimes (because his motivation is vengeful and he sees it as "justice") and/or he wants to laud it over the stupidity of his enemies at failing to solve his riddles. Either way he is looking forward to revealing what he has done; that is his character's through line. It doesn't make sense for Sutekh nor did it make sense for Dracula. But I think RTD is so enamored of that generic plot device that he doesn't care about the rationalisation. And for that matter; why is Kaled an anagram of Dalek? Thank god that is never spelled out in Genesis just a one-line saying something like "kaled? K a l e d. That's interesting"- if Genesis was written by RTD the cliffhanger of episode one would involve the Doctor hacking a computer screen with his sonic screwdriver, like it is a magical tv remote (it only has one button but you can program a power point presentation with it instantaneously!), just so it could demonstrate via a flash animation that the letters of "Kaled", if you put them in a different order do actually spell the word "dalek"; we would watch the letters rearrange themselves on the screen just so we are absolutely sure) only for all the computers in the room to suddenly display the word "dalek" repeatedly as if in hysterical sympathy with the first computer, and the camera gives ever more dramatic close ups of each monitor screen! Now, if you wanted a rationalization, what if his name had to be uttered in order for him to manifest himself, like kandyman? In that scenario he would have a motivation to leave a clue to his identity in plain sight. Consider this plot is written by the same people who thought you were a crazy conspiracy theorist if you speculated that the Wuhan novel bat coronavirus might feasibly have escaped from the research virology lab in Wuhan that is specializing in developing new strains of bat coronaviruses. Maybe it was the lack of anagrams that made that story seem far-fetched! Maybe if a Doc V I Nineeten had been running the lab they would have found it more credible!
@DoctorHowTV9 күн бұрын
@@markpostgate2551 Agreed. A narcissus like the Toymaker or the Master or Q or the Riddler might conceivably use a puzzle to announce themselves, but not Sutekh. That Kaled reveal, complete with swelling orchestral score, is 100% what they'd do for modern audiences!
@mudcrab34209 күн бұрын
The added problem with RTD and his little anagram games is that S Triad is not really an anagram. You removed the letter you couldn't fit. The added added problem is that if you play by RTD's rules for making anagrams what can we make using the word Ncuti? (Spoiler? Not safe for work). Well done Davies.
@markpostgate25517 күн бұрын
@@DoctorHowTV It just occured to me how funny it is that they don't care that most of the audience won't know who Sutekh is but they will hold the hand of anyone who doesn't know how an anagram works?

Great review show from the panel . Once again the internet is full of " It was the best episode evaaaaa! ". For me,it just seemed like fan fiction . Do I care who Ruby's mother is? No, and she doesn't seem bothered who her dad is . But he won't be important ,he's just a man. I fully expect ruby's mother to be one of the mummies,because RTD is clever like that. The best thing about this episode is new fans may watch the pyramids of mars on the iplayer now and see what real.doctor who was/is.

Nice show. As usual your points were all spot on. I did enjoy this episode as it was a vast improvement on previous weeks. However lazy writing is lazy writing. RTD blatantly stealing ideas from others while regurgitating his own. Not to mention a prolific writer not knowing the difference between an anagram and a portmanteau. To be honest I think RTD has always done this but back in 2005+ we were all just so glad to have Doctor Who back, we didn't notice or care. More than ever I really noticed his Soap Opera style dialogue this episode. I can't put my finger on it but there is an annoying rhythm in the speech patterns and often banal dialogue. I believe the main issue is that if the character of The Doctor doesn't resonate nothing falls into place. RTD cast 2 strong actors in Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant and because they made The Doctor their own the show worked even in sub standard episodes ( and there were quite a few). However in hindsight I feel casting the right actors was a fluke by RTD. He has a history of employing actors he has previously worked with and that's exactly what he did then. Fortunately it worked. Ncuti on the other hand despite bags of charisma does not represent the spirit of The Doctor. More specifically he is RTD's Fantasy Doctor. Of course you can blame the writing. However Eccleston, Tennant, Smith and particularly Peter Capaldi all had bad stories but they all shined due to sheer talent.Even the almighty Tom Baker had some stinkers but he was never less than stellar. It's in the name of the show, we all watch for "Doctor Who". Having said all that I am quite keen to watch next weeks Finale.

I agree that it's confusing that RTD says they're trying to appeal to a new younger audience but refers to things from the series past that someone born in the 00s won't probably know. As for the episode itself, I'll give it 3 out of 5. It's better than most of the other episodes, although I think Boom was better written. I'm guessing this won't be anything like the Sutekh of old anyway it will be like the new Davros and the Toymaker. He's using the legacy, but its not really them it's just an attempt to capitalise on other people's ideas. I totally agree that they've made the doctor too human, and he's not even a capable human. The companion was always the one we were supposed to relate to. It's Sarah in the Pyramids of Mars who is emotional when they find the body of Laurence Scarman. The Doctor literally pushes the body to one side and starts examining the robot mummy. Sarah says, "Sometimes I don't think you're...." and then stops, and the Doctor finishes the sentence "Human. " He realises the urgency of the situation and doesn't have time to get all emotional because he has to save the world. That's the Doctor. All the Doctor's could be that way, we'll apart from Jodie but the point is the Doctor could be quirky and silly but when it came to it he was able to be serious and take charge. Now, even Mel, who spent most of her time on the show being either annoyingly perky or screaming, is telling him to get a grip.
@WhosViews8 күн бұрын
Thanks Nigel, welcome to Who's Views. This is the danger of continually referring to the past, especially now the show is so old. I think the only things relevant from the shows fab history are the Daleks, The Cybermen, The Sontarans and at a push, The Master.
@nigelwalker61038 күн бұрын
@WhosViews I think you can successfully bring elements of the past back. You just can't take it for granted that the youngsters will know them, so you have to do it cleverly. If instead of just having a random woman appear in every story, they'd actually dropped some hints about something from the Doctor's past coming back, that could maybe have built up the anticipation. They could have had subtle clues relating to Egyptian mythology in a couple of stories, too. In a weird way, they did this a lot better in the McCoy era for a villian who had never actually been in the seriss before. Fenric. As part of Ace's story arc, we find out (in a story written by her creator Ian Briggs) that Fenric was behind her being transported to Ice World and it makes sense of a throw away scene in Silver Nemesis where the Doctor plays chess. No one was expecting an arc back then, but Curse of Fenric manages to create out of nowhere a powerful enemy from the Doctor's past and make it feel like there are big stakes. It also adds layers to the Doctor, he knew something was going on before the story but kept it to himself, making Ace not trust him. Ironically, this revelation helps save her.

The doctors reaction to sutekhs reveal was kind expected and a relevant one, he said he split in two with the toy maker and couldn’t stop maestro and was afraid that it was too much to stop and that it would lead to disaster and maybe his own death, probably didn’t know how to stop it this time, plus the doctor being more human I have no problem with, the doctor regenerates to endless possibilities, he can be anything including personality, sexuality etc..

Prove to me that the show is being watched by the Great British public Jordan on the I player and not just a minority of die hard fans going back over and over again. We also hear that the iplayer views are not that strong. We are looking to discuss that when we get the official figures. I've had another thought, which I hesitate to mention. I think the reason the Ncuti's Doctor hasn't taken charge and been basically like the Doctor is that I think now it's got to the point that RTD can't have a man being in charge. Not even a black gay man. It started with Tennant in the Star Beast being criticised about pronouns, and then that awful line "You know nothing and we no everything" also "It's a shame you're not still a woman because she'd have understood. So I think they've deliberately made it so that the Doctor is essentially neutered. Even if David Tennant came back, they couldn't let him save the day because that would make Ncuti look lesser. My prediction is that Ruby will save the day, which will solve her storyline as well, and it will be a deus ex machina. Susan might be in it, but I doubt it. As much as I would love Carol Ann Ford to return, I think she deserves to be given more than a brief cameo in this story. What do you think?
@DorisDay-lw4xs6 күн бұрын
Its going to be Donnas son and his super powers that’ll save the universe.

I think that's a very good point, actually. I hadn't thought about it quite like that, but I can see where you are coming from. It seems rather obvious if you think about it. The Doctor is secondary to Ruby, and that's a pattern we've seen repeatedly from Marvel and Disney.

But that's Davis for you. He couldn't write reality if his life depended on it. Nothing Davis does stimulates me. He's just an overrated, overinflated bag of piss who really is intolerable, and wants to piss off. Moffat was the same. I've never accepted Kate Lethbridge-Stewart as a credible character.
