For me it has always been between Black Sabbath And Deep Purple with their epic 1970 albums ( Sabbaths debut and the monster that started purple as we know them now, In Rock)
Speed or sound? was there an ealier album that if you listen to now screams METAL???
Comment below and in part 2 we will look at all the suggestions and maybe ill even change my mind and i missed a band.............

I think one element which defines what is metal is the lyrical content too, it has to be dark, about satan, fear or death or something similar so in that vain I think Black Sabbath is the first true Metal song as we would recognise it now. That said, I think Dazed and Confused from Led Zep 1 (1969) comes veeeery close to being a metal song. It's got dark lyrics and a dirty heavy riff which sounds like screams. It's probably just this side heavy rock though, as is the rest of that album.

I agree the content of the lyrics and the whole feel is a massive part……….put on bloodsucker and speed king and see how you think they stack up, and possibly into the fire, think you might be surprised! Zep was right on the edge for me but it’s too bluesy in my opinion

Surely you've got to go back to 1964: The Kinks' "You Really Got Me". That IS a metal song. Van Halen's version just clinches the argument!

Always a valid song to chat about but for me it’s what sounds like metal now. If I listen to you really got me now it’s a great early rock track that influenced heavier music which is awesome.
