Interesting lecture, thank you. I visited the Longfellow house in Cambridge, Mass last summer during my 3 weeks stay in Boston.

Hi! You might be interested to know that I’m a descendent of Longfellow! He really was an excellent poet and man, before I knew he was my great-something grandfather I always loved his poetry and was inspired by it. Proud to be his descendent.

Interestingly enough, I just found out a few weeks ago through my 88 year old grandfather that I am also a descendant of Longfellow. I had never heard of him before, now Im finding myself looking into his life and work. Cheers to us!

Bowdoin also gave us Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, professor, soldier, college president, and governor of Maine who died in 1914 at the age of 83 of the wounds he suffered in the civil war.

Poe was known for his critical nature and his tendency to harshly critique the work of his contemporaries, including Longfellow. He expressed his disdain for what he perceived as Longfellow's overly sentimental and didactic style, which he considered to be lacking in originality and depth. Poe, being a more avant-garde and experimental writer, may have resented Longfellow's success and the mainstream appeal of his poetry.
