Who Was John of Damascus? Should Christians Have Images of Jesus?

Although debate has continued for centuries if Christians having paintings of Jesus is idolatry. John of Damascus dealt with this conversation when it began. What do you think about his defense of using icons?

Good to see that people were appealing to church history in the 700s to justify their idolatry. I'm beginning to think appeals to tradition shouldn't be taken very seriously.

I don't see his defense as leaning towards idolatry, though I think Catholicism tends to fall that direction. Based off of what I'm reading it seems that even though he believed honor given to icons would be passed on to what they represent, he seemed pretty adamant that icons cannot and should not be worshiped.

The accusations of idolatry that Protestants continue to promote against the Catholic Church were settle centuries ago. These is no new interior persuasion that individual Protestants received from the Holy Spirit since the 1500’s

It is better for christian worship the unseen Jesus, the unseen God just like muslims. They should use the cross without Jesus on it. It means they only remember death not the sacrifice of Jesus, because cross means death. So they would be mislead further and further from Jesus and what Jesus wants his followers to do.

Christ represented on the Cross reminds us of the ransom that the Lamb of God paid to redeem us from sin.
