I believe Melchizedek was an Old Testament manifestation of Jesus. He was both High Priest and King of Salem (Jerusalem) - no one but Jesus can hold both titles. There are various god's mentioned in Genesis, El-Elyon (God, the highest God) is one of them. Melchizedek is not a name but rather the title of the Priest-King of the ancient town of Salem (from shalom-peace), which was renamed Jerusalem. The Hebrew melech means king, and tzedek means righteousness, which gives us king of righteousness. The god worshipped in Salem was El-Elyon. The story we have of David taking the city of Salem/Jerusalem, means he took the title as well, Melchizedek. This story can be interpreted as David honoring the patriarch Abraham.
