Shlomo Perel (Solomon Perel) was a Jewish teenager in Germany during the rise of Hitler and Nazism. After escaping to the Soviet Union and destroying his identification papers, Shlomo transformed himself into dedicated Nazi Josef “Jupp” Perjell. It wasn’t until the war’s end and his immigration to British Mandate Palestine that Josef would begin the lifelong journey of returning to his Jewish identity as Shlomo.

About Explainers: From ancient Jewish traditions to the modern State of Israel, we explain it all. Diving into anything and everything related to Jewish culture, history, and even religion.
Understand Jewish holidays, Israeli politics, Jewish diasporic communities, and more. Learn about Judaism in pop culture, debunking myths about Jews, and explore obscure Israeli landmarks. We’re asking questions as basic as “What is the Talmud?”, and as obscure as “How did hip-hop boost Kosher wine sales?”, and everything in between.
About Unpacked: We provide nuanced insights by unpacking all things Jewish. People are complex and complicated - yet we’re constantly being pushed to oversimplify our world. At Unpacked we know that being complex makes us more interesting. Because of this, we break the world down with nuance and insight to drive your curiosity and challenge your thinking.

@@Topg1It’s a Nazi.. I think he was an angel compared to others. A Nazi is a Nazi. There isn’t a good Nazi. My opinion on them didn’t change even if he gave Shlomo a slice of bread. I have no such expectations. But if we pretend this is a normal situation with a normal person, sounds to me like he probably thought shlomo was gay also. Because he could’ve easily take advantage of him when he found out he’s a Jew. Actually I would’ve expected that. Who knows. I don’t care. We have bunch of so called “humanitarians” who are doing much worse now supporting terror groups…..

I met Solly Perel in Germany, when I was there lecturing about Holocaust and Jewish identities. I met him again later in the US at the Wiesenthal Center and Museum in LA. He was the nicest man, obviously stricken with anxiety about his survival yet many Jew in his audience's castigated him, insulted him for having used the Hitlerjugend as a survival mechanism. I've never heard such mean things said to an old man as those said to him; ie better to have lived in "Jewish truth" and been slaughtered than to have "become" one of "them." He looked so wounded when things like that were said.

He interpreted what his mother told him, I bet his mother didn't tell him to join the Nazi and live a lie. My grandmother also impressed on me the need to survive, and when I asked her at what cost she replied that I should strive to stay alive, but to do so with dignity and humanity towards others. As a 14 year old, I think I might have lied about my identity in an attempt to stay alive long enough to escape the clutch of the Nazi militia, but I would not have stuck around to assist those fuckers. Let us not forget that many of our grandparents told us that some of the best people died in the Holocaust because of acts of generosity and kindness towards others and that many collaborators survived because they traded the welfare of others in order to promote their own self-interest.

There was another Jewish boy who was a Zionist, a Jewish nationalist, while also being a German nationalist. He wanted to marry the two together somehow. His name was Hans Joachim Schoeps. He even tried to make a deal with the Nazis, the youth services, unsuccessfully. After 1938, he managed to escape from Germany to Sweden, where he studied philosophy. He went back to Germany after the war and became a very controversial public figure, in both the Jewish and German communities.

Back in 2002, I came across a review about a book that talked about Jewish soldiers in the Germany military in World War II. It was titled, "Hitler's Jewish Soldiers: The Untold Story of Nazi Racial Laws and Men of Jewish Descent in the German Military," May 6, 2002. Bryan Mark Rigg is the Author. He interviewed Jewish German World War II military vets for his book. When he would be asked to speak at Jewish Community centers, the audience at first was not open at all to hearing about this subject. But at the end of his talk, there were times he'd get a standing ovation. He had a follow up book published in 2009. "Lives of Hitler's Jewish Soldiers: Untold Tales of Men of Jewish Descent Who Fought for the Third Reich (Modern War Studies). Published in March 2009. Bryan Mark Rigg is American veteran having served in the Marines, studied history at Yale and Cambridge, and later taught it at Southern Methodist University and American Military University.

It was a good movie and an amazing story. They took some license with the story in the movie, especially at the end, but basically it is the same story. From Germany to western Poland to Soviet controlled Eastern Poland, and then gradually back to Germany, taking on whatever identity would enable him to survive at the moment. It was incredible. And you thought that your teen years w ere difficult and confusing.

So I guess circumcision wasn’t very common in Germany’s population back then.

@reinhardvonlohengramm6296 It's not common in the UK, I've encountered a handful of non-Jews who had the surgery done as small children due to medical complications. If you are a Jewish lad in a secular school, invariably your classmates who are circumcised will be Muslims and other Jews.
