Pontius Pilate oversaw Jesus' crucifixion around 30 AD, but what else do we really know about him for sure? In this video we dig into the facts, and the mountain of historical fiction (like the Acts of Pilate/Gospel of Nicodemus) associated with this enigmatic from the first century.

Yeah, that's kind of the point of facts. The more you study the historical accuracies the more you have to disregard the myth surrounding him, and as soon as you do that you see the same pattern with Jesus as with your average con man. All of a sudden he's just a man who conned people in a manner not too dissimilar from other religious cult leaders. No one's disputing that Jesus existed since it can't actually be disproved. They dispute that he didn't have magical powers and that he wasn't actually the son of God. Also, it's a logical fallacy to use the Bible as a historically factual source in order to prove the Bible is historically accurate. You need to use multiple non-religious outside sources, compare them, and then come to a conclusion. A religiously biased person is also very much the wrong person for that job.
@rhubarb5670
@rhubarb5670 4 жыл бұрын
@@CriticalRoleHighlights I'd be interested in hearing your argument for jesus being a con man as, given the major faith that grew up around his story and the surrounding evidences, the way I see it he either had some supernatural power or almost all of his story was fabricated by Paul with help from Peter and John because, were he a con man, his following surely would have ended in his death. Also since all historical sources carry biases and so their accuracy must be determined by corroborating the data from multiple sources as well as extrapolating the writer's motivation from both the text and historical context so looking at the Bible and comparing it with other sources (as is done in this video) is definitely not a "logical fallacy" (also throwing terms like that around historical study is slightly odd as so little is certain or singular but maybe I'm missing something, please help). Furthermore, it is probably almost impossible to find a researcher who isn't biased in some way concerning the history of Christianity and Jesus so this research simply joins the larger body of research and viewing that body as a whole is a way of limiting bias and so research by educated religious people is essential for making sure all biases are countered by the opposing bias. I currently consider myself an agnostic if that aids any response to this, please correct any errors in my thinking

Now THAT’s the way to study scripture! Non of this evangelical, bible-thumping ranting that we all grew up with. Just logical, fact-based, historically driven information, in its context, that a thinking person should appreciate and thus build a sounder theological understanding of the WORD. To me, this is the ONLY way to gain understanding of Jesus and the unimaginable significance his life and death plays in our lives. Also interesting to note that the pharisees were in effect blackmailing pontious pilate. They claimed that christ has exalted himself above ceazer by claiming to be Lord and king; if pilate would release him he would be an enemy of ceazer. So Pilates already being concerned about his own life is in a very difficult predicament.

Had a moment of realization today, after watching this last night: In Matthew's Gospel, the guards at Jesus' tomb go and report to the Jewish leaders what has taken place. The elders pay the guards to claim they had fallen asleep, and if the governor (Pilate) gives them any trouble, they'll take care of him. The Jewish leaders seem to be operating under the assumption that they hold considerable influence of Pilate, maybe even emboldened by their recent "win" in the whole Jesus incident. Perhaps the guards' willingness to accept this deal suggests a similar belief on their part. I think it fits so nicely with the picture of a Pilate who has his mind elsewhere, and can't bring himself to focus on governing these rebellious people. Anyway: Love the video! Thanks for all the hard work, research, care, and more that went into this!!!

Hey I know these are secondary sources but you should read the book by new testament scholar Warren Carter entitled Pontius Pilate portraits of a Roman governor. And a book by another historian entitled Pontius pilate in history and interpretation by Helen k bond these books were really insightful about pilate historical role in Jesus execution and it also proves that the whole thing was a political show trial where Jesus guilt was already decided upon by both Caiaphas and pilate

@patrickbarnes9874

I don't believe the story about the guards as Roman legionaries. Either the guards were Jews appointed by the Sanhedrin or they didn't exist. The penalty for falling asleep on guard in the Roman legions was death. And that justice was not subject to influence by locals and not carried out by the local governor, it was Roman law enforced by the tribunes of the legion. I find the notion that Roman legionaries would have conspired with local Jewish religious officials and agreed to admit to a death penalty offense that they didn't really commit to be unbelievable. It's like saying that during the occupation of Afghanistan a squad of US soldiers would have admitted to smuggling cocaine when they didn't do it because a Taliban warlord said he'd put in a good word for them with the US Army if they got court martialed. It's just not believable that the soldiers would ever trust the warlord to get them out of trouble, and not believable that Roman legionaries would trust the Jewish religious leaders to keep them from being executed for admitting to falling asleep on duty.

For Pilate to publicly wash his hands of Jesus' death is a critical statement. I've never thought much about what happened to Pilate after the crucifixion, though I'm glad you did the research. I loved this video. Pilate has always been an interesting figure to me. Here are a couple things that came to mind as I watched. - Pilate would have still been in Jerusalem at the time of the crucifixion as well as after the resurrection.He would have experienced the darkness that fell over the city for hours, as well as the earthquake that reached as far as Nicea.. Further, he would have later learned of the extent of those two events. Surely he would have at least wondered at these in the context of Christs claims, Pilates interview of Jesus, and his crucifixion. -Also, Pilate would have heard the reports of the tomb guards and sightings of Jesus. I know it is only speculation but he surely must have had thoughts about these issues and been affected in some way.
@deezynar

Yes, that is all true. He also would have heard about the miracles being performed by the disciples after Jesus died. It would be nice to think that he became a believer, but we have no evidence one way or the other. That God would forgive the man who represents all the Gentiles in the act of sacrificing the lamb of the world, would be extremely profound.
@BB-kt5eb

deezynar We do have evidence he became a believer. The Ethiopian Orthodox Church teaches that he converted and that he was martyred by the emperor for the faith. He is even a saint in the Ethiopian Church. Considering the Ethiopian Church was started by St Mark and is one of the oldest Christian churches, it’s logical to conclude there could easily be some real validity to this.

He processed the real questions, and he seemed to be drawn to ask Jesus those questions... It’s so fascinating to hear all the different stories and legends of what might have become of him later... And i could very well imagine that his spiritually-sensitive-dream-receiving-perceiving-husband-warning wife became a Christian later... just wondering and speculating.🤔

Thanks Matt, this was super interesting and informative. I, as someone who didn't know much about Pontius two hours ago, lean a bit towards the France legend. Like you said, lots of smoke, maybe there's fire. Also that the 8th C. archbishop unequivocally stated Pilate died in France. That suggests the fellow had lots of good evidence. TMBH has been consistently informative and challenging, and I really appreciate it. Out of interest, where'd you buy that coin from? I think my dad would enjoy one as a birthday gift.

Thank you for this video! The timing was absolutely crazy! I started a thirteen-week teaching series at our church on the Book of Luke a few weeks ago. I am including a lot of historical backstories (Since Luke did so as well) and spent three days compiling research about Pilate and those around him. After I completed my lesson notes, you published this video... You help confirm all of the research I had already done and even gave me a few more connections I missed in my own research. I could not have enjoyed this video any more than I did! Really great work!

This had a very Sarah Koenig feel to it, almost like you were doing investigative journalism on Pontius Pilate. Fascinating. As for theories, I don't know why the Eastern and Western views of him couldn't both have some truth to them. My theory: Maybe after Pilate meets with Caligula, he then goes back to Caesarea where there are people that might still be loyal to him (or maybe he heard mid-voyage that Tiberius had died and turned around), then he sees this whole Christianity thing taking off and wants in on it (because he wasn't too fond of Judaism anyway and maybe saw this as a way further eliminate it) and helps start churches in the region. Then, somehow through his old connections to the Roman military he hears through the grapevine that the Romans are planning to come and sack Jerusalem and they don't care too much about the subtle differences between Jews and Christians, so he flees to France ahead of time and ultimately dies near Vienna.

ENTIRELY PLAUSIBLE............. Logical Sequitur... Simply: ''The Historian's'', Job NOW to 'Prove' [proof it] & one helpful item is that more and more 'Forensic Archaeological'-Tek is In Use modelled on existing 'Forensic' platforms (In many Fields & Disciplines (from Archaeology to Medicine) - this adds MUCH power to The Field (of Historical Investigation!).

Ok so first time watching one of your videos, and very impressed! I love history and historical context of the Old and New Testament. Learned quite a bit! I love having interesting context when explaining the Bible to my kids and this is the type of stuff I get them intrigued by. That way my kids are asking me questions! Thank you!

Great stuff, Matt! To me, it seems most likely that Pilate retired to France or some other place. However, it is hard to ignore the eastern traditions as well, but maybe its just me projecting... Love, Your Mom

Where did you get that coin? Sounds like a cool thing to have and to show to people. Oh btw. Before you said you lean towards Vienna, from everything you said so far I thought it is most likely, but maybe just because of the obelsik. However, I wonder how legitimate that thing is, or better, how legitimate the inscription is. On another note, I think it would be really interesting to hear your "testimony", however that would be a highly subjective video and that doesn't seem to be your style. Would love it though!

More serious note: while the one or two texts floating around of Pilate's report are at least somewhat forged (obviously written up a looootttt), it was generally understood by patristics with strong ties to the government that his report was indeed in the files somewhere in Rome; and they act like it has been accessed on occasion. If i recall correctly, Julian the Apostate confirms Pilate's report along the way (as part of his anti-Christian arguments, for reasons too complex to get into here). So I think Pilate's report, whatever it was, can be practically counted as one of the things we know about. We just don't know what was in it, but I think we can guess the material was pretty neutral and uncontroversial. (Julian was appealing to it for a theological point about how dumb he thought it would be for God Most High to submit to a mere human authority. He does bring up Jesus having registered for one of the ongoing Roman censuses at least once, maybe twice, which is interesting though not really controversial.)

The Tertullian claim is interesting. Eusebius isn't in the habit of just making up sources, so there's a good chance Tertullian did claim that (in a work later lost). Where he got it from would be hazier, but it does actually sound like something Tiberius would try, which the senate would be likely to reject as diplomatically as possible. None of that would require a real conversion either, which makes the story less like convenient apologetic legend. The sticking factor, I suppose, would be whether Tiberius would have survived that long. (I'm fuzzy about whether he ever got back to Rome and the Senate during his self-imposed exile at Capri, but I suppose the story would effectively still be true if he sent a letter, as he often did to the Senate, and which would be easier for them to carefully ignore or delay on and not be suspected of treason by the increasingly crazy Emperor!) Worth noting that Eusebius was more in favor of Pilate suffering divine retribution, so his reference to Tertullian -- a source he actually claims to have at hand -- gains more credence proportionately.

Thanks Matt (sp?), that was really interesting! For me especially as I am currently doing a M.A. in Military History and so was really interested in seeing how a trained historian works (I am sort of changing careers from journalism to history... the two are very similar!) I was aware of the Ethiopian Church's view of Pilate and have been intrigued by the parallels between the Gospel accounts of Pilate's wife talking about a dream, and the Roman historians' accounts of Caesar's wife seeing a dream the night before his assassination. Incidentally, I have had dreams in which I believe God warned me and the dream was bang on. That's quite remarkable. Also thanks for describing the 'Pilate Cycle', which I had, frankly, not known about. BTW, I was once in Vienne, France, and it is a beautiful little gem of a town, but didn't know about Pilate's link because I was just driving through. Thanks again, a most enjoyable video!!! All the Best from a rainy, cold Pretoria, South Africa!
