His rookie year was wierd. Started off so slow, like often a second slower than Massa. Then Canada where he finally scored points that seemed to give him the confidence he needed for the rest of the season. It has to be said too that Canada race was a frustrating watch because Stroll was clearly driving way too cautiously and under driving that Williams. Like you see onboards of him lifting out of overtakes when he's alongside his competitors. So it was good to see him get over that hump by getting some points that day. He had a solid car that season to stand out though. I think realistically Williams should've been fighting the Force India's that season but found itself fighting the unreliable Renault more often. Definitely the team under performed that year but still a strong rookie year from Stroll.

I dont get the oscar hype? What was so special about his season? After 20+ races, he was nowhere near charles who was beating a 4 time world champion, while oacar was still way behind lando.

@@askeladden450 He had multiple races (like miami) where he had a slower car, less upgrades. He has been matching Lando's pace over one lap and was quicker than him in the rain in Spa and Zandvoort (which speak volume given how good Lando is in wet weather condition). He hasn't had any big crashes and showed tremendous handling of the pressure. Also, post Germany 2018 Vettel wasn't the same, the car also had a loose rear in 2019 and Vettel is no better than a guy like Stroll with that set up. Imo, current Lando > Any (besides 2015 and 2017) Hybrid era Vettel.

@@quentinhirschfeld9382 i dont get this 'vettel wasnt the same after germany 2018' talk. He was just as good that season after the race and got just as many podiums despite merc being much faster. And he was just as good in 2019 too. The 2019 car didnt have a loose rear, that was the 2020 car. 2019 car was built completely around vettel and charles still beat him. 2020 was an absolute anhilation. Lando has beaten a rookie and a washed dani ric and somehow he is better than 2018 vettel, who was challenging for a championship in an inferior ferrari and was comfortably ahead of a world champion teammate? Not even close. Oscar is a very mature driver, doesnt make mistakes, and is definitely quick on one lap pace. But he has been so bad at tyre management and race pace that he just cant hope to win championships if he does something about it. Hopefully it will come with experience.

@@askeladden450 2018 Vettel was pathetic, the amount of spins and contacts he made is unbearable mate, he threw that championship fight away. Raikkonen was also faster on some occasions despite a 2nd driver treatment. He kept falling down after that year, he had again pathetic mistakes in 2019 and was sometimes barely faster than Stroll.

@@laszlomatko9981 Disagree, Albon was good, but he was overall slower than Kvyat and even if he did well in the second part of the season at RB, he was still way off the pace from Max. Lando consistently matched Sainz and wasn't from unlucky incidents or bad luck would've scored points at basically every race.

Max Verstappen will always be the best rookie. If you watch 2015, he was battling with the big guys in the front row in a Toro Rosso, which back then has the same pace of the Alpha Tauri 2023.

Hard to say. Apart from a couple of brilliant showings, he was not that mich ahead of rookie carlos. Pretty inconsistent. Yeah ik he was just 17 but a rookie is a rookie.

Imagine saying ocon was better than alonso in 22, or that sainz was better than leclerc in 21, or that rosberg was better in 16 or that alonso was better than raikonnen in 05. If you want to have an opinion, atleast take the effort to watch the thing beforehand.

Ocon was. Ocon destroye him in the rain at Interlagos (that was the performance that earned him the Force India seat, he was in the point for a large portion of the races and was on average 3-4 tenths faster per lap despite never driving an F1 car in those conditions) and matched him 3-3 in races were both finished. At the beginning not the season, he also struggled to beat Haryanto in qualifying.

I agreed with most of your analysis except for 2022. I'd say Zhou was the better driver during most of the year, yet was unlucky that the car was only able to score points during the first few races. Bottas was able to capitalize on this since he was already accustomed to f1 and performed well when the car was strong, during the first few races. After the car got bad, there was no catching up possible for Zhou.

Best rookie each seasons: 2014 - Kevin Magnussen 2015 - Max Verstappen 2016 - Esteban Ocon 2017- Lance Stroll (only rookie that season with a certain amount of races, so...) 2018 - Charles Leclerc 2019 - Lando Norris 2020 - Nicholas Latifi (same as Stroll) 2021 - Mick Schumacher (it was between him and Tsunoda, both unremarkable) 2022 - Nyck De Vries (default choice) 2023 - Oscar Piastri

Wehrlein was clearly rookie of the season in 2016. Ocon 2017. Norris 2019, although Albon did well against Kvyat. Russell had no benchmark against an injured Kubica. Latifi easily the best in 2020 😊. Yuki v Mick is impossible to decide for 2021 because Mazepin was a lolcow. Zhou was astonishing in 2022, scoring 6 points in a car that secured 6th in the WCC 😅. Piastri ROTY in 2023, no questions. Max 2015 and Leclerc 2018

Yes, Ocon was very impressive. I considered the fact that Lance was 2 years younger than Ocon when he joined F1, had a much stronger teammate in Felipe Massa, was able to get a podium and secured a front row start in the Italian GP (that wet quali was amazing, he was 4th but was promoted due to the red bull drivers taking grid drop penalties). And as I mentioned Ocon also participated in the 2nd half of 2016 for Manor Racing, so had a bit more experience in F1 cars.

@@f1alpaca Sergio Pérez > Felipe Massa from 2013 onward mate (that's a fact, Massa was mentally destroyed from his Ferrari years and was never the same after his accident anyway). Ocon wasn't a rookie anyway, but let's not forget he literally matched Pérez's qualifying pace and progressively took the upper hand as the season progressed. Stroll was on average 8 tenths slower than an old and off-prime Massa

@@quentinhirschfeld9382 ocon didn’t really have enough time in 2016 to be rookie of the year. Also in this video the guy put ocon as a rookie for 2017, since that was his first full season. While Rio may have matched him in qualifying pace, he severely lacked in race pace and that’s where it matters. Also pascal could definitely have been the next big thing if he wasn’t dropped in favour of Ericsson and money.

He had a very successful junior career. He started quite well in F1 and beat Daniel Ricciardo in 2015 in his first year at Red Bull. He even got an offer from Ferrari. While he showed some brilliant drives during his F1 career, he was a bit inconsistent and error prone. And then Max Verstappen came to the scene.

He was barely faster than Ericsson (go check if you don't believe me). He had some spikes in his inputs, very inconsistent (don't forget Ocon beat him with less experience in the Manor).

Nope, that was Ocon. Ocon beat him despite arriving mid season, he also obtained a superb 12th place in the pouring rain at Interlagos with 0 experience in those conditions while he was 19, very consistent. Wherlein was also barely faster than Haryanto in qualifying at the beginning of the season, he is overrated just because he got points in Austria.
