Romans didn't even think Greeks had the right to call Romans as Barbarians, However Greeks so freaking love to call Romans that...That is why Romans refused to forgive Greeks by give them the citizenship of Rome after conquered Greece. As for Barbarians, Romans think they are humans but much lower than Roman-Greeks.

“Emishi” sounds like a natural phonological transformation of “Ebisu” according to Japanese pronunciation patterns. (Compare _saburau_ [“to serve”] vs. _samurai_ vs. _de sourou_ [archaic humble copula].) Your guess is as good as mine why they started using those kanji for the word though.

I love this video. Also, it explains why some Japanese men look like George Takai while others look like David Suzuki, and the way in which the Emishi are described is very similar to the way some Roman sources (including Julius Caesar's memoirs) describe the Celts, who were probably the main inspiration for the Wildlings from Game of Thrones.

I already knew about the emishi and ainu populations in japan when I watched Princess Mononoke so I could enjoy it's history context. The clothing, manners, tools and even the way the characters fire an arrow seems to be accurate. Hey man, I just discovered your videos recently and really really love them. I started reading George Sampson's history of Japan a while ago and I started to use your videos to supplement my reading. I thought it was quite cool when I discovered you use the same book as a source for some of your videos. I was just wondering if you were going to make a video, or have made a video, on the Taiho code? I am having a little bit of trouble understanding it and how and why it failed. I think I understand it more less, and I think I understand its long-term ramifications. But I'm still worried that I may have missed something.
@Linfamy
@Linfamy 4 жыл бұрын
Hey good luck going through Sansom's books! They're great, though many today would consider them dated. There are more up-to-date survey type books around if you're interested. But Sansom's books are great anyways. I did make a video about the Taika Reforms, which the Taiho code is a part of. You can probably search for it. The Taika Reforms established a Chinese style government with departments of Worship and State, provinces, and laws. The reforms were ambitious but they ultimately fell short of creating a Chinese style state. The Chinese had a (theoretically) merit based government. The Japanese tried to do the same, but could not overcome the strong bonds between clan members. Loyalty to the clan usually won over loyalty to the state, so it remained a government based on family connections instead of merit. That's how I understand it.
@matthewarmstrong1609
@matthewarmstrong1609 4 жыл бұрын
@@Linfamy thank you very much. I am very interested in more up-to-date works. How are the Samson books dated and should I be reading them? I don't really want to read something that is factually inaccurate. I did notice a few problems with a few of the details. Like he does talk about the Jomon and Yayoi cultures but he doesn't name them that or differentiate them from the Yamoto and Ainu. So I was under the presumption that they were the same names for the same people. So your videos for me on those cultures were very helpful! Anyway thank you for the reply, and if you ever need book suggestions for the ancient near East or ancient Egypt, I have a few great ones. I love ancient history and the ancient history of the Ancient Near East and Mediterranean in particular, but lately I've been trying to branch out more. Thanks again and keep going with the videos they are great!
