Who Were the Maccabees? (And what did they mean for Jesus?)

What did the ancient Jews have in mind when they thought "Messiah"?
Included in some Bibles, but not often found in Protestant Bibles, are the Books of Maccabees. They detail some pretty intense stories, stories that help give context to the Gospels in the New Testament. The Jews were living in a time that had specific and intricate political and religious realities. We try to distill some of these events so we can get a better idea of the world the Jesus enters and ministers into.

Pretty good summary but you missed 2 huge and related points directly to your subject: 1) You did mention the one non-Levitical high priest being appointed but you completely missed the Maccabees - of the tribe of Levi and the Houses of Aaron and Zadok - grabbing not only the high priesthood for the Hasmoneans but also usurping the throne of David to which they had zero Biblical right. Descending from Zadok or Saddok, they became the Sadducees. 2) This spawned the two major political parties of Judea AND their doctrinal positions that are a constant background noise in the Gospels. To make this usurption seem legitimate, the sadducees HAD to de-legitimize the books of the prophets that spoke repeatedly of a Messiah from the House of David and the tribe of Judah, hence they only acknowledged the 5 Books of Moses where the tribe of Levi was in charge. To rebut this, the Pharisees party, largely of the tribe of Judah, was born. They invented the synagogue to take religious instruction away from the Temple. They invented the position and office of rabbi to lead that instruction or indoctrination. Those rabbis were seldon Levites and were Judeans often of the House of David like Hillel and Gamaliel. Neither is mentioned in the Old Testament. They emphasized the prophets and also invented "the oral Torah" That eventually became the Talmud which BOTH Jesus and the Sadducees roundly rejected. If you do not see that, you miss a lot of what is going on in the Gospels. Jesus, a Judean of the House of David, is claiming to be BOTH Messiah King, heir of David AND the High Priest of Israel offering himself as sacrifice, as well as being Yahweh himself. At the same time he roundly rejects the Judean Pharisees for putting words in God's mouth and trying to seize the priesthood themselves. He is basically telling the Sadducees, who were still heading the Roman puppet government to get off his throne. They both hated him for very obvious reasons once you know who they really were.

@@thetruedoctrineofchristnet7473 I &2 Maccabees are in the Catholic and some Protestant Bibles and easy to find elsewhere. They are part of the Apocrypha. Books of the Old Testament era considered useful by the Protestant Reformers but not equal in inspiration to the canonical ones. Luther did not like Maccabees because a passage in 2 Maccabees was used by Catholics to support the doctrine of purgatory tho reading it shows it does no such thing. The Pharisee rabbis that solidified the Masoretic Hebrew text in the 10th century AD would not have wanted a book that glorified their old rivals the Sadducee priests. Neither Jews nor Christians were likely to Make Josephus' books scripture since Josephus was a captured Pharisee general in the Jewish War of 70 AD who joined Vespasian's Romans in the siege of Jerusalem, We Can't have traitors writing scripture. Jpe did however write an excellent history of that war as an eyewitness and a pretty good retelling of Jewish history for his new Roman friends (Vespasian becomes emperor) using the Old Testament but giving updates beyond even the Maccabees with lots of details there. It or at least a summary of the history should be taught in every church as background. Not all teaching has to be doctrine.

The Jews were actually expecting two messiahs, a Messiah ben Joseph and Messiah ben David. They thought Yeshua would be the Messiah ben David (the conquering king) but he came as the suffering servant (Messiah ben Joseph). When Yochanan (John the Baptist) asks if Jesus is the one or should they be looking for someone else, he isn't having doubt and asking if he is the Messiah, he's asking what role he came to fulfill and Yeshua's responds by remezing with scriptures that allude to both Messiahs, saying that he will fulfill both!

Just small correction, the Antigonids ruled what the Seleucids did in 272 bc. Ptolemaios I even helped Seleukos to get rid of the Antigonids. The Antigonids with Demetrius Polyokertes ultimately made Macedonia their homeland after they killed Kassandros, avenging the murders of the ones who killed Alexander s’wife and heir by poisoning. I know its not a video on the Diadokhi but just wanted to explain better this part of history that has lot of action and betrayal

God inspired many Bible prophets to provide details about the birth, the ministry, and the death of this promised Deliverer. All these Bible prophecies were fulfilled in Jesus Christ. They are amazingly accurate and detailed. consider a few prophecies that foretold events related to the Messiah’s birth and childhood. The prophet Isaiah foretold that the Messiah would be a descendant of King David. (Isaiah 9:7) Jesus was indeed born in David’s line. -Matthew 1:1, 6-17. Micah, another prophet of God, foretold that this child would eventually become a ruler and that he would be born in “Bethlehem Ephrathah.” (Micah 5:2) At the time of Jesus’ birth, there were two towns in Israel that were named Bethlehem. One was situated near Nazareth in the northern region of the country, and the other, near Jerusalem in Judah. Bethlehem near Jerusalem was formerly called Ephrathah. Jesus was born in that town, exactly as the prophecy foretold! -Matthew 2:1. Another Bible prophecy foretold that the Son of God would be called “out of Egypt.” The child Jesus was taken into Egypt. He was brought back after the death of Herod, thus fulfilling the prophecy. -Hosea 11:1; Matthew 2:15. Prophecies While you examine these scriptures, keep in mind that those of a prophetic nature were written down hundreds of years before Jesus’ birth. Jesus stated: “All the things written about me in the Law of Moses and in the Prophets and Psalms must be fulfilled.” (Luke 24:44) As you can verify in your own copy of the Bible, fulfilled they were -in every detail!

It's a detail I actually spent a lot of time sorting out. The short answer is that it seemed to be the most historically-appropriate name for the region. Herodotus referred to it that way in the 5th century BC and it was used by Greek and Roman authors after that. If memory serves me well, I considered "Judea" but that was a smaller geographic area right around Jerusalem and so not representative of the whole region the video talks about.
