Among the first enemies of the Romans, with whom they clashed for the control over Latium, the Volsci are the umpteenth emanation of the Osco-Umbrian people.
From the Lepini Mountains to the Pontine Marshes, the Volsci set out to conquer the rich centers of the Latins and Aurunci and then clashed with Rome, which they gave a hard time throughout the fifth century BC.
From warlike invaders to declining people, pressed between Romans and Samnites, the Volsci definitively lost their independence in the fourth century BC, but gradually became part of the Roman social fabric to the point of giving the City one of its personalities of capital importance : Augustus.
