This is a bassinet cover. Sort of between a light coverlet and a lacey shade cover that can be drawn over top of the bassinet, crib, pram, or stroller to shade and protect Baby from the elements and drafts, indoors or out. I remember my Grandfather building a tiny maple and cherry bassinet and my Grandmother crocheted the cover for it. I think they made it for a church raffle in the 1960s.

Would roughly be pronounced "bare-so-NET" -- French 'r' pronunciation makes no exact English equivalent. Uncle Google says a berceaunette is a wicker basket with a partial top used as a cradle, so close to a bassinette.

I totally agree, for patterns like this where there are long repeats and you need partial repeats to maintain symmetry, having a starting stitch count is essential. I remember when I first started crocheting, those confused me, but now I appreciate them. I also get frustrated when a pattern wants you to do the same thing as in a previous row (example: shell in a shell), but it's worded differently. Why? You want me to do the same thing? Use the same words! Anyway!! I love how this looks at the end with the diamond holes. Could see it being used for a beach cover-up or breezy cardigan too. Great job working through this mystery pattern! Definitely chaotic, but not a hot mess - the chaos is why we all love the mystery patterns ❤

One caveat about Hooks & Needles... unless they have changed in the last 4 months (since January 2024), you cannot get more of the yarn that is included in the boxes. You get 2 skeins - and that's it. The yarn is gorgeous, but you will never be able to get enough for a larger project than the one in the box. I typically don't do small wearables, so as much as I loved the yarn, the subscription was a waste of money. 😟 I sincerely hope others get more out of it than I did.

One of these days you should make a book filled with the updated translations of the victorian patterns with their photo outcomes!

Tip for bone tools: If the bone is dry you can take some Vaseline on the hooks to make them smooth again, sometimes they need several thin layers, it depends on how dry the hooks are. The dirty ones you can cook for up to an hour in plain water to get them cleaned and you can also get the bent ones straight again. But sometimes they are just sadly too far gone. But if you cook them they need to get Vaselined afterwards, otherwise they get dry and brittle. When the hooks doesn't want any more Vaseline you can dry them off with a cotton cloth and take some hard beeswax towards the hook/hooks to protect them and make them smooth and shiny. I have done musical instruments in bone and that's why I know this. The beeswax aren't necessarily if you can't get hold of it. I love watching as you figure out these patterns, and you have more patience than I ever will. I suggest that long ago, some bassinets had hoods or a hood frame. This crochet piece, made wide enough, might be lined with a fabric then placed on the frame to provide shade for the baby. Some bassinets doubled as prams.

As I've said before, I like the typing sound, given that my mother was an avid crocheter and an excellent typist. I find the sound to be comforting and inviting. I figured a stitch count in my head, but because I'm knitting someone a hat for an upcoming birthday (not you, but I may have something else in mind), I have yet to test it. We may have come to the same number of stitches, I'll let you know. Great job, great video, and I look forward to the next one!

Yes, we all have our quirks. Mine is those chain ones at the turning. Hate 'em. Unless the pattern has a very specific design idea for putting them there, which I've only seen once, I omit them with impunity! Ha! So there! I'm a crocheter that has also written my own patterns. Based on what I saw that you were doing... I think you were right the first time, and there is a mistake in the instructions, something left out. I think what you are supposed to do, is after that last shell, you should chain 2, then do 1 dc in the last stitch. It would make it match up with what you had in the beginning. When you 'fixed' it for the different chain count, the shell pokes out, and this looks like it's supposed to be a rectangular pattern, with straightened edges on either side. It looks to me as if there should be a 3dc block at each end of the pattern. At least, that's how I would do it. A berceaunette is a wicker basket with a hood, which is probably what the bassinette was derived from. I think the difference is that a bassinette is the height of a cradle, where a berceaunette is set on the ground... probably used to take infants outside when the family was out on a picnic, or the mother was sitting out in the yard shelling peas/beans. There was also probably a contraption with a handle and wheels that held the berceaunette to turn it into a stroller. You would put this type of blanket over the berceaunette so that there was enough air to baby to breath, and not get too hot while shading him/her from the sun. It could even double as a coverlet for baby if it got a little chilly.
