I would've ruled the first a single with an error on the throw. Easy solution 😂
@6thwilbury233125 күн бұрын
Nailed it, for precisely the reason Jack stated: Arenado beats out the throw no matter what. The initial "bobble" is already beyond ordinary effort for the fielder given how hard the ball was hit, and how far the fielder had to move away from his base - particularly to his right. So good call by the OS, good call by Jack, good call by you. 😊

Umps are not in charge of hit vs error.
@6thwilbury233125 күн бұрын
"The No. 1 rule of scoring, do what's obvious." Unfortunately, that's very often not the case (unless ordinary effort itself is obvious). The number of times a very makeable play is ruled a hit is staggering to people who've never scored a game. In the case of Betts' fly ball to right (3:16), the outfielder misjudged the fly and went too far back. Then he had to dive forward in an effort to correct for a bad route. Common sense suggests this should be a caught ball - i.e. an error seems "obvious.". However, the OBR ("The Official Scorer shall not score mental mistakes or misjudgments as errors") and the MLB case book ("Taking a bad route is a mental mistake and not an error") both spell out this scenario. Thus, once that OF has to dive for the ball, it's no longer ordinary effort, and thus, the batted ball becomes a hit. This is why fans, players and especially coaches/managers are often shocked to see how rarely we charge errors. Based on the rules as interpreted right now, they are surprisingly hard to give.
@alexowen952826 күн бұрын
First play should be ruled both hit and error. Infield single with the throwing error allowing the runner to take second base
@cinco_de_la_tarde25 күн бұрын
I think you gotta cut the ejection vids a little shorter. If an ump starts pointing at you like that, you are likely getting tossed.
@legitimatebusinessman553725 күн бұрын
In the last ejection video, the umpire pointing after the hitter slammed the bat down was calling an equipment violation. That’s essentially a warning (possibly a fine?), but not an automatic ejection. If the player then slammed something else down (say, he slammed his helmet after the umpire pointed at his bat), then that’s an automatic ejection. It’s unfortunate that they didn’t show the entirety of the play/ejection, because it would have been more obvious. The bat slam didn’t get him ejected, but he almost certainly did or said something afterwards that got him tossed.

Guys I'm new to baseball why does an ump have to call hit or error like how does that effect the play?
@MikeP205526 күн бұрын
Oh boy, depending on how new to baseball you are, that's kind of a tricky one to answer because there are a lot of scenarios, but it all boils down a player's statistics (or as I like to call it, Baseball Math). Let's say there's a player on third base when a batter steps up to bat. He hits the ball, makes it to first, and the batter on third scores a run, BUT those two things only happened because a player on the fielding team screwed up the play and it was ruled an error. That means the batter wouldn't be awarded an RBI (run batted in) or a hit. A proper hit would have improved his batting average (and other stats, but I don't want to get too far into the weeds). They're basically saying that the batting team only got the one run and a man on first base because the fielding team fkd up. I hope that makes sense. That's the quickest, easiest example I could think of.
@manuell435525 күн бұрын
@@MikeP2055 that clears it up perfectly, thanks. I thought the call might actually influence the game in some way
@legitimatebusinessman553725 күн бұрын
@@manuell4355The umpire does not score the play. There is an official scorer who is judging each play. The umpire only calls the plays based on what happened. The official scorer decides if it “should have” happened, essentially. Hits/errors come down to statistics, but do not affect the outcome of the play or of the game. The umpire calls plays that determine the outcome of the play/game. So, this video is unrealistic (which they state at the very beginning), because the umpires would not be making hit/error determinations.
