@aschmidty112 ай бұрын
The tricky thing with the on field plays is the angle we have from the TV is so different from what the ump actually sees. So my guess is Madrigal's helmet fell just right in the worst position it could for the ump
@cinco_de_la_tarde2 ай бұрын
That last one especially falls into that camp. He looks out by a mile from the camera angle but you need the Umps position to see if he actually whiffs the tag.
@vidowatcher912 ай бұрын
And the audio too. On safe/out call the ump is looking at the bag to see when the foot comes down while listening for the ball to hit the glove. At least, that's what a broadcaster told me in a game I watched once

@rileyneff18892 ай бұрын
Honestly, I wouldn’t really mind that, since bad/unfortunate positioning is usually the actual culprit of bad calls. It might actually do wonders for the perceived integrity of all sports leagues if fans realized that the official didn’t intentionally blow a call, but instead just ended up in the wrong spot and had a mess of legs block their view.

Used to be a community little league umpire. It’s so much harder than it looks on TV. Sometimes the angle from the broadcast is just a better angle to see the play, and sometimes the only way to see what’s going on is being right there on the field. Being an umpire is a thankless job, and I respect a great deal of them for being as consistent and good as they are.

A big part of calling plays at first is sound. It’s very important to listen to when the ball hits the glove compared to when you see the runner touch the base.
@AWood7292 ай бұрын
Isn’t the ball being in the glove for an out technically before it hits the glove?
@iamjp12 ай бұрын
@@AWood729humans have one set of eyes so it would be hard to look at both the base and then track a 90 mph throw trying to see when exactly it enters a glove in real time😂😂 look at the base, listen for the glove. replay can determine which millisecond the ball enters the glove haha
@LetsPlayBojangles2 ай бұрын
@@AWood729 yes but you can only look at one thing. And the ball popping the mitt makes a more consistent sound than the runner touching the bag so you look bag, listen for sound. It's not perfect but it's more reliable than anything except instant replay with a perfect camera angle.

As a former umpire for softball, the view on the field is SO much different than the view on TV, so it's completely understandable Jack got the one wrong. And Zo, I've never known any of the players names, or coaches for that matter. Just knew which small town was playing against the small town I lived in

As an ump I can assure that angles are a thing, especially when calling balls and strikes. You see, the umpire is not centered with the plate, he's a bit to the side, in between the catcher and the batter. This makes calling inside balls easier but makes calling outside balls really hard because of parallax, untill you get the hang of it.

I had 8 out of 11, a lot of these were bang bang which I do like and I like the idea that you dont get a replay. The fair and foul bouls, I always call them fair if I'm unsure because you can always stop after and be like oh that was foul ok go back to bat, you cant do the same for foul to fair.
@garyedwardgray75492 ай бұрын
Played along with you guys. Got 8 of 11. Proud of myself. I used to be an umpire. I quit because I sucked. LOL. And the foul on the right field line looks fair even on the slow mo. So, I’m gonna chalk that up to the camera angle. I got one pitch wrong, and missed the pop-up on the slide at third. Not bad for a guy who quit the business cuz he sucked so bad. Of course, doing it this way, as a KZfaq play along is far easier. What got to me, and the reason I sucked so badly, is I anticipated too much instead of going with the play. If someone SHOULD have been out but wasn’t, I would sometimes call them out anyway. I didn’t suck so badly that I did it all the time. But I did it often enough that I knew umping wasn’t right for me. I do a great job armchair umpiring, as I did in this video (I think 8 of 11 is “great” considering the right field line play still looks fair). But throw me in the middle of the action on the field? Forget it. I’m a disaster.
