Whoa! I Can't BELIEVE What Fuel Mileage The New Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 Managed On A Road Trip

According to official EPA figures, the best possible fuel economy you can expect from the 2021 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 is 17 MPG. On a full tank of fuel at 21.5 gallons, you should only expect about 300 miles of range. On this road trip, though, what did Tommy actually achieve? Is it better (or worse) than what the EPA estimates?

I have a feeling the power to weight ratio overcomes some of the raw fuel consumption. Compared to, say, the 3.6L or the 5.7L... The 5.7 is pretty rough because imo it's inefficient AND a little underpowered for what it is, and the 3.6L is efficient but a little underpowered for something like a Ram 1500. Throw the 6.4L in there, you overcome the power:weight issue, and that offsets some of the consumption

I would call you a damn liar - but I owned a 300 w/ 5.7 and a Charger SRT 392 w/ 6.4 and BOTH blew me away on highway gas mileage if you set adaptive cruise and stay out of the throttle (and aren't climbing serious elevation). They are both really impressive platforms.

I had a '95 Wrangler with a 4.0L straight 6, and a 99 TJ with a 4cyl, and for the reason you describe above, I always got way better mileage out of the 4.0L. It simply didn't have to work as hard. And by comparison, there wasn't hardly a moment where that 4cyl wasn't under tremendous strain.

If you've already replaced pretty much everything on your JKUR, you're already at 60 to 70k total including purchase price. Typical 392 conversions run about 40k on the high end if that's what you're after. In my mind, that would make this JL Wrangler 392 somewhat reasonably priced considering all the things you won't need to replace outside of Tires. When the 392 market settles down, I'm tempted.

Looks like a similarly equipped V6 Rubicon including one-touch power top is around $62k, without the lift and fancy shocks. Add in those extras and the difference for the 392 might be less than $10k, which doesn't seem so bad. Would be cool if you could get the 392 in a slightly less optioned package. I suspect that'll happen later, but for now Jeep is getting maximum profit margin by packaging the 392 with everything but the kitchen sink...

In the US, at least when we first started the idea was supposed to be there's very few taxes except for the wealthy and corporations and then the Government leaves you alone to make your own mistakes and decisions. If you don't save enough to cover your own medical expenses that's your problem. If you don't save enough for retirement that's your problem, if you don't save enough incase you lose your job that's your problem. That was what apart of being 'free' meant, to be free in making your own decision and also to be free on what you decide to spend your money on. But too bad dumb people in the US think that the Government knows better about what's good for them than they know themselves. I had a 392 in my 2014. It was an AEV conversion kit. Maintenance isn't any more difficult than he V6 except the oil filter is a little harder to get out around the steering system. Plugs go in the top of the valve covers and anymore they last a long time. The 6.4 has more grunt than the 5.7 L and with 35" to 37" tires and some altitude the Jeep can use it. My road mileage was around 16.5. I rode in this Jeep and it's more refined than mine was. Jeep did a great job on these.

I was considering a G63 but after careful consideration, this car has my heart. Nothing better than American muscle, the ability to remove the top and doors, and have an entire community associated with the brand/model. Plus, the exclusive "Jeep wave" should be enough.

Ok I’m not fond of the quality control with FCA (Stellantis or whatever it is) but I’m actually proud of the engineering to fit the engine in there. Good job engineers.

We own a 2010 Wrangler Rubicon with a 6.4L Hemi engine swap. Went straight from the dealer to the after market shop for the upgrade. 6" lift, 40" tires, wench, heavy duty steel from and back bumpers. In 2010 it cost well over $80K to have this done. I can't imagine what it would cost today, which is why I would gladly pay $78K for this off the lot. It's fun to drive and before these 392s started coming out, a bit of a sleeper. Folks reaction to flooring it off the starting line is hilarious. When the light turns green my nephews yell "Aunt Mxxxxx, step on it!" and then laugh at how fun that was. 8-10 mpg. Worth it.

awesome ! Thats very very impressive ....I am guessing its the low end tq that allows it to "put along" w out a downshift. As long as your not pushing it too hard I bet this could see very close to 20 mpg ....closer to 65 mpg the better w the lack or aero...I bet at 75-80 its 13-16 ish .......how much better would the penstar V6 or 2.0 L Turbo be ?? Can't be much w those tires ....I best the V6 is only a hair better ...very impressive !

Kind of a bad test, because from Vail down to Denver/Boulder, it's mostly downhill cruising. Yes there are some uphill moments, but not enough to offset how much descending you do.

Uh. Wow. That’s just amazing for an off road beast but not for a family hauler so yeah it’s for boomers and us X-gen’rs that want to show off, on and off road with the most cylinders and HP. I appreciate this a lot for what it is, but for $74k I assume most would buy a TRD Pro something, TRX, Denali, or a Raptor to haul more everything on the slightest of dirt and rocks. Thanks Tommy, dad(Roman), and all of the TFL family for all the awesome unbiased and honest reviews.

Transfer case is similar to the Grand Cherokee WJs (99-04) that had available 4.7L V8. They came with the full-time 4wd that went to a 4hi and then 4lo.

Selectrac offers 2Hi as well. This new Selectrac isn't the same, simple, viscous-coupling NV242 tcase that was used in the XJ, KJ, and ZJ. This Selectrac system uses electronics in FT 4WD.

@@RKmndo That's interesting. And I was actually thinking of the NV247 which came with the "Quadra-Drive I". Select Trac had them all I believe (2hi, 4hi part time, 4hi full-time, Neutral, and 4 lo). Do you know which transfer case the Rubi 392 is using?

I would thought that jeep would have put in the 5.7 Hemi into the Wranglers before sticking in the 6.4 (I have a 2019 loaded 6.4 Challenger Scat Pack and love it, it's MSRP was around $50K, not $75K)
