Nana Badu: A majority of Afro-Jamaicans trace the majority of their African ancestry to Ghana. The Maroons of Jamaica are primarily Ghanaian descendants. Chief among those Maroons was priestess, Nanny who led rebellions against the British colonizers/slavers which eventually led to the British signing a treaty with the Maroons in 1734, granting them semi-autonomy in Jamaica up today where they live in their self-governed townships such as, Accompong.

True Dame Greetings. Actually, your statement is false and not supported by slave records or DNA. Part of Jamaicans’ African ancestry can be traced to modern day Ghana but certainly not the “majority” as you claim. You should visit Tracing African Roots website. The author warns people not to buy into a “one tribal” roots myth as the reality is that Africans throughout the diaspora have a mixed West and West Central African ancestral background as supported by slave records and DNA. I have yet to see any Jamaican genetic cousin match with predominantly Ghanaian DNA. I have only seen approximately 15% and some slave records indicate that approximately 36% of Akan people shipped to Jamaica in a certain time period and another time frame would indicate in the teen percentage.

@@001islandprincess Let me repeat: a majority of Afro-Jamaicans including the Maroons trace the majority of their African roots to Ghana. Another major African ancestry is from the Ibos of Nigeria, etc.

When I was a toddler in New York City during the 50s some strange people came to my house. They said that they traced us from Africa via the Slave Route. They kept talking about a Tree. They would say that the tree told them that their family was a tribe from Israel and had escaped from the Roman soldiers who besieged Jerusalem. My ancestors escaped to Africa and eventually ended up in the Sahara Desert Region. They then ended up in what is known as Malawi. Of course my sister and I thought that they were crazy for talking to a tree. Because of my ignorance and arrogance my parents decided that I was going to Africa to learn about my roots. I learned that the tree was The Family Tree that tracked my ancestors from Jerusalem to the name of the slave ships that brought my ancestors to America. Back then Africa was truly Africa. I remember people getting killed by lions and Leopards. I remember the large herds Elephants. I remember going hunting for food. The history that I learned in Africa is diametrically different than the so called AFRICAN HISTORY that they taught in the American schools. We had those eight millimeter cameras that had no sound and the Kodiak camera with Rolls of film. I am very happy for Reggie that he was able to reestablish contact with his roots and find his African family. When I was in the Navy I went back to Africa to buy the house of my ancestors. Now my children attend school in Africa and debate with the teachers. Our true history has been whitewashed. But I was very fortunate to visit the first African University in Timbuktu and learn about my history, heritage, customs and culture. Now the western nations want to destroy our history by building dams, highways, railways Mega cities. I refuse to sell my ancestors land to the CHINESE people who are the new Colonizers of Africa.
