Like many people, Fiona Bruce dreams of finding a rogue in her family tree. “Dull is not good,” jokes the newsreader and presenter of Antiques Roadshow at the start of her episode of Who Do You Think You Are? “What would be great, I suppose, is if we got some kind of a great character or some sort of, I don’t know, a mass murderer, a stripper, or someone extraordinary.”

Fiona Bruce's great-grandfather, Frederick Crouch, died during World War One in mysterious circumstances. The family story is that Frederick failed to duck down when shells began falling nearby, despite the fact everyone else around him dived for cover. But a letter written by Frederick's widow to her son's school soon after the war reveals the sad truth behind the story.
Another family story about Frederick is that he joined the army to escape his parents. Hoping to understand the reasons, Fiona investigates the life of Frederick's father, a seemingly respectable Victorian photographer. It soon becomes clear that all is not as it seems with William Crouch, a larger-than-life rogue and star of a celebrated court case.

The level of record-keeping in England & the isles will never cease to blow my mind. A drunken, rheumatic pauper died in 1876 (not knowing that his great-great-granddaughter would turn out to be a nationally recognised television personality), and 150 years later, you can reconstruct his life, almost to the day, from immaculately maintained and preserved records. Absolutely incredible.

I had a 3rd great grandfather William Dunston who had an unusual death. He was drunkenly driving home in his wagon in 1848 when he literally fell off the wagon, hit his head on the way down, landed face down in a puddle, and drowned.

I had a distant relative (great-great uncle) who suffered a similar death. He was drunk and was fording a river and fell off the horse. His wife witnessed the accident. This I found on Findagrave.

seems george had rheumatism which likely was a result of his job as a fisherman, and the alcohol was probably medication for the pain. poor fellow.

Or maybe his alcoholism was so bad that it caused nutritional problems (malabsorption) causing gout. That might have been called rheumatism in the late 19th century. It would also explain his cause of death. Either way it’s a terribly sad story.

@@petat13 He could also have had cirrhosis or an undiagnosed cancer (liver cancer?) that caused cachexia.

@@Ea-Nasir_Copper_Co True. I guess the point is that disease was classified so differently that our understanding of these terms doesn’t always apply.

@@petat13 We're also assuming he would have seen a highly qualified physician. A lot of these diseases were known to exist in his time, but they were often only diagnosed in people well-off enough to receive a diagnosis.
