Review of the Gaggia Magenta Prestige. This slim performer makes it easy to enjoy cafe favorites in your home. Key capabilities and features make it an excellent value compared to machines from other manufacturers. Using a simple yet powerful touchscreen interface, whole beans ground fresh and a detachable milk carafe it's easy to make cafe quality favorites including espresso, coffee, cappuccino, latte macchiato, Americano, espresso lungo, cafe au lait, flat white, ristretto, cafe cortado and plain frothed milk.

Been using the Magenta Prestige now for a little over 3 months. Just LOVE it ! After work a Flat White and sometimes an Americano. Those are the 2 types of coffee I use most. Right now with coffee beans I took with me from the Vera Cruz area in Mexico. Also with some beans from a small local bean roaster (especially like his Peru beans) Learning more and more about coffee and enjoying it even more that way. Thanks again to WLL for their insights and explaining about the Magenta.

Finally got my Gaggia Magenta Prestige yesterday (Was delayed in Italy for a week) Easy set-up (thanks to the WLL video's) First few drinks were rather bad, so were the pucks. But after 7 to 8 tries the machine started doing great ! Specially love the Cortado, the Flatwhite and the Americano. Thanks again WLL and Marc for these great video's and helping me make the decision to buy this great machine !

Hi Bert, You are welcome and thank you for the comment sharing your Magenta love! Yes, some users get a little worried with the first extractions being weak. It's just the machine adjusting to the coffee and dose you are using. Once it has a baseline they get so much better. Our favorite drinks are similar although the Americano tops my list. Marc

Is it wrong to go through every drink variation on your first Morning with it?!!!!! Appreciate the video on operations and settings. Better than the Gaggia corporate video. Got my machine from you yesterday and so far loving it. Really like your enthusiasm for great coffee and your comparison videos really helped me decide on the Magenta Prestige. Decided to buy a machine after getting spoiled at a friends house who has a $6K Miele machine. The Magenta hit the perfect spot between cost and convenience for me. Truly a great Value. Thanks for the fast delivery and all the videos.

I've had my machine 3+ months and I love it. It would be great if there was some kind of forum to exchange brewing ideas, but this will have to do. Based on Marc's suggestion, I leave the grind set to finest and Aroma to strongest for everything. I (think I've) learned a few tips from speaking with customer service which I'll share. The Aroma setting only adjusts the grinding time. It doesn't adjust to the Volume of espresso you choose or the hardness of the beans you are using. In other words, it grinds for a set number of seconds depending on how many "Beans" you set it for. So, whether you set it for 40ml of espresso or 80ml, it uses the same amount of coffee, which means that the 80ml espresso is just adding more water. Which brings me to my question. I had been setting my cappuccino to 70ml of espresso and 140ml milk. I like the total quantity, but it tastes a little thin. Has anyone cracked the code for cappuccino on a Magenta? Meanwhile, one more tip. The first drops of milk froth are actually water. I put a spoon under the milk spout just as the milk starts to flow. I capture about 1/2 tsp of water and pull it away. Not a huge deal, but it lessens the dilution.
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 2 жыл бұрын
Hi MDLB, Thanks for your detailed comment and question as well as sharing your love after using the Magenta for 3 months. The cappuccino you are making is relatively large. Your 70ml of espresso is being made from a coffee dose of ~11.5g at max strength setting. That's a light dose for 70ml volume. Couple ideas... 1. Keep your milk at 140ml and reduce your your espresso to 35ml. Make that and then do another max strength espresso of 35ml over the top. 2. If you like a coffee forward milk drink try the flat white. When you make a flat white the machine will do 2 grind cycles automatically for more espresso flavor. The flat white flips the prep order so it does the 2 espresso first then the milk. In the flat white the espresso and milk mix more than in the cappuccino. It's personal preference of course but the mouthfeel of the flat white is very enjoyable and coffee flavor will be more pronounced. Marc
@mdlb6363
@mdlb6363 2 жыл бұрын
@@Wholelattelovepage Thanks, Marc. Yeah, I had already stopped the 70ml cappuccino for exactly the reasons you mentioned. I went back to the default cappuccino setting of 40/120. It's better, but not enough CAFFEINE or enough total volume. On the other hand, 23g of coffee is a lot in the afternoon. So I'm going to try a flat white with 140ml of milk, but drop down one Bean in the Aroma setting and 2x35ml. If I update this at 3 AM, you'll know I overcaffeinated.

Can you adjust the amount of foam when making a milk drink. Also does this machine add air to the crema like some machines. Thanks
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 5 ай бұрын
Hi aw, Thanks for the question. The amount of frothed milk can be programmed. If you're referring to the density of the milk foam, then that is not adjustable. The machine does not add air to the crema. Internally the brewing process is similar to semi-automatic machines using a portafilter.

@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 4 ай бұрын
Hi, you are welcome and thanks for the question. Coffee temps out of those machines are the same. If looking for extra hot milk froth understand that automatic machines do milk to ~120-140F. This is the temperature where milk has best flavor due to heating and where a well trained barista froths milk to. I understand some like the milk hotter. If that's the case for you I suggest a machine with a manual wand frothing option. On those you can make as hot as you like and create a very fine micro-foam. Automatic frothing typically produces an airier traditional cappuccino density. Here's a Gaggia Cadorna with manual steam wand: www.wholelattelove.com/products/gaggia-cadorna-barista-plus-automatic-espresso-machine-dark-chocolate-straight-grain

Hi Anna, You are welcome for the video. Answer depends on what is important to you. Is it price, features, drink selection, ease of maintenance? Thanks for the in-depth review Marc! I’m in the market for a fully automatic machine and have been watching a lot of your reviews. I was wondering which machine in your opinion makes the strongest and best tasting espresso?
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Marina, There are so many choices! For a good strong espresso go with a machine that does 2 grind cycles automatically when you select a double espresso. All Gaggia machines do that. There are a couple more recent Jura machines that do it but they have high price tags. I really like the Gaggia Cadorna which uses up to a 22g coffee dose when making a double. The Cadorna is our daily driver in the office. The Magenta does the same dose I just prefer the UI and build of the Cadorna. It's also good if the machine will be used by more than one person as it has user profiles allowing for storage of 4 custom versions of each drink. I also appreciate the slide out front access to the water reservoir. Whatever machine you get if you like it strong be sure and set the grinder to its finest setting, coffee strength to highest setting and temperature to high. From there program a single espresso to produce about 1oz/30ml liquid volume. When you make a double you'll get a 2oz/60ml espresso made from 22g of ground coffee. If that's too strong you can back off on coffee strength. If you don't do milk drinks very often or are okay with manual milk frothing the Cadorna Barista Plus is a good option: www.wholelattelove.com/products/gaggia-cadorna-plus Hope that helps! Marc

In my experience, do NOT get the LatteGo. I had one, and the milk based drinks left a lot to be desired. First of all, they were miniature. Also, the espresso it made was mostly sour to my taste. But the most important reason is that despite the milk I tried, including whole milk, the consistency of the milk was terrible, and disappeared into the coffee shortly after it was processed. Forget about latte art quality in this coffee maker. if you are looking at the 4300 line you are better served in getting the one with the classic milk frother, and save about $200.00. This way, you can make the milk to the consistency you want.

Hi Marc. Thanks for the detailed review. With milk drinks, is it possible to make it with a double shot of espresso (grind twice, brew twice), but the same amount of milk/froth? I’m afraid the single dose from a compact super auto may not be strong enough for my taste.
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Bernard you are welcome and thanks for your question. It is possible to make with a double shot. With the Flat white that's automatic - you'll get 2 grind cycles yeilding a ground coffee dose of up to 23 grams. For other drinks you can always add a shot manually or do milk froth separately and do a double shot before or after the milk is dispensed. Marc

I know ceramic burr grinders are usually on the lower end of the spectrum due to not having near the longevity of steel burrs, is there a way to replace these ceramic burr? How often do they need to be replaced if so? And how much would this cost?
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 2 жыл бұрын
Hi DDX, Actually Ceramics stay sharper longer than steel burrs so long as they do not encounter foreign objects like small stones. I've ground many hundreds of kilos of coffee through machines and have only once run into a small stone - it's very rare. Should you have a ceramic burr go bad you just replace the whole grinder. The entire grinder assembly part runs about $70. Marc

Just got the machine delivered today after buying from your website. I notice there is a short stream of water that is released before the milk comes out when im making cappucino, cortado etc.. is this normal or is there something i can adjust so that there is no additional water leaking into the cup for milk beverages. Thanks!
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage Жыл бұрын
Hi r, A small amount of water is normal - especially with the first milk drink due to condensate in the steam system. In most cases any added water is negligible in relation to total drink volume. Whenever milk is steamed, even on prosumer level machines a small amount of water is added. If you'd prefer not have it you can move the cup aside for the first release of milk. Another tactic is to run a small amount of just frothed milk from the machine immediately prior to making a drink. Hope that helps and thank you for your patronage.

Hi ml, Yes, you can use the machine without the filter but will need to descale more frequently. Filter life depends on source water hardness. The harder your water the sooner you need to replace. For water with mid-range hardness filter capacity is 400-600 cups.

Hi YH, Thanks for subscribing! If you have not been there already, here's a link to the machione on are website. 35 reviews there: www.wholelattelove.com/products/gaggia-magenta-prestige-super-automatic-espresso-machine Warranty on the machine is 2 years parts and labor through us. No extended warranties are available. We are the Gaggia Certified repair center and located in NY. Gotta take what you read on Amazon with a grain of salt. Satisfied customers are much less likely to leave a review. These machines are highly reliable so long as you do the basic maintenance. We get regular reports of well in excess of 10,000 brew cycles with nothing more than routine maintenance. It's like any product with moving parts and liquids involved - ignore taking care of the product and you're likely to have trouble at some point. Hope that helps!

Hi team - thank you for the video! I took out my brew unit to wash it off. There's yellow gunk here and there. Is that manufacturer grease? Or excess coffee residue? I only find the grease/gunk around specific joints/areas. Thanks!
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Y, You're welcome! Yes, the "gunk" is a food safe grease applied by the manufacturer for lubrication of the brew unit. Do not wash off or remove the grease. For cleaning take the brew unit out about 1x/week and rinse at sink with room temp water under faucet. Allow to dry and re-insert in machine. Yellow discoloration is some coffee residue in the grease which is okay. We have this video which shows how to deep clean/rebuild the brew unit in which the grease gets re-applied: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fq2dmdF4s8WugXU.html Video demonstrates using brew unit from a Gaggia Brera but procedure is essentially the same for the Magenta's Marc

Hey Marc hope u are well. How does the milk froth compete with miele units? I know miele units make a very micro froth. So very very smooth. How does the magenta prestige compare? Also is it very loud? Will it wake up my house at 5 in the morning? Via grinding or anything else?
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jacob, I am well and thanks for asking. Hope you are too! The milk froth is very nice on this machine. It's not as fine as milk manually frothed by someone with barista skills but quite good and similar to that from other decent auto-frothing machines. One thing that makes a big difference in mouthfeel/apparent froth quality is the ability to flip the milk prep order to be correct for the drink being made. Many machines always do the mik prep first. The Magenta Prestige does that for a cappuccino or Macchiato but flips to espresso first as needed for drinks like a flat white. I would not call the machine loud but it does make noise when grinding and brewing. Unlikely it would wake up the house unless they're in the same room. I have a similar machine at home which I use in the main floor kitchen at 4:30am while the wife is sleeping upstairs about 30 feet away behind a closed door and no noise complaints. Marc

I like the compact nature of the magenta but prefer the extra choice of drinks and the front loading water tank on the cadorna. I’d like to make a latte on the go in the morning for my drive to work, so I think ultimately it may be the drink size that swings it for me. What is the largest latte one can make on each machine? Hi AJ, Too bitter generally indicates over-extraction. Corrections for that are set grind coarser, lower brew temp, reduce coffee strength. But you might also try a different coffee - no idea what types you were using but if dark roast you might go to a medium roast.

I currently use a Lavazza capsule machine but, since I am now drinking more coffee am concerned about the number of capsules I am using. Hi GJ, The Magenta Prestige sounds like a good choice for you. Another option is the Cadorna Prestige. Also has front access to the water reservoir which works out well if the machine is placed under cabinetry. Check it out here: www.wholelattelove.com/products/gaggia-cadorna-prestige Marc

Hi Dulce, Thanks for the questions. You can use any beans you like except for beans with anything more than a minor amount of visible surface oils. Visible surface oils are more common in very dark roasted beans. Beans are often roasted extra dark to cover flavor defects in inferior beans. You end up tasting the roast and not the flavor of the bean. You do not have to buy beans from us or do a subscription. Shipping on orders over $50 is free. Sales tax is added to orders shipping to New York, Indiana, and Wisconsin.

Hi BG, Thanks for the kind comment and question. We get regular reports of >15,000 brew cycles with nothing more than routine maintenance. Most important is using quality water to prevent limescale deposits and descaling machines when alerted to do so. We suggest keeping the brew unit clean with a weekly rinse at sink with room temp tap water and a deeper cleaning and lubrication of the brew unit every 6-12 months depending on usage level. Take care of these machines and they will take care of you for years! Marc

Any input is appreciated on what to do with this. Thanks!

Hi Marc, Thanks for another great review (as always!). I bought a couple of superautomatics from WLL over the years, but this time, 2 weeks ago, I got the Philips 5400 - not from you though since you don't carry the Philips machines. I wonder if there is any reason to go with the Magenta for $500 more vs the 5400 - a 50% higher price tag. The features are very similar, and each machine has a few features the other one doesn't. And given the fact that they share many of the components since Philips owns Gaggia, I assume the quality is very similar. How many oz/gms of coffee and how many oz/gms of milk. Also the grind setting, temp, and the coffee variety. For example, for a Flat White using Crema Wave with the finest grind, use X oz of coffee and X oz water on X temp. Marc... you like Flat Whites, what's your formula? It'd save me a lot of extra experimenting and I might be able to actually sleep at night. Thanks

Hey MDLB, Thanks for sharing your experience with the Magenta. Here's a video I put up on Friday comparing the Magenta Plus to the Magenta Prestige. In the video I make a flat white using Crema Wave on the Magenta Prestige: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l7GSl7l3y8uRc5c.html My flat white recipe w/Crema Wave... I like them strong so I go with strength level 5. At that setting the machine will grind ~ 11.5g of coffee and when making a flat white it does 2 grind cycles automatically for a total coffee dose of 23g - that's a triple shot so it's a stiffly caffeinated drink! I set the grinder to it's finest setting (always do), temp to high (always). I set espresso volume to 2.5oz and milk volume to max of 3.8oz. That's a morning drink for me as I would not sleep if I downed that much caffeine in the evening! Marc

@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Cam, Well... Not familiar with that grinder. But if me I'd go Gaggia Classic Pro. Bambino is a pressurized basket appliance. The Classic Pro is a true machine that'll last a very long time and is easy to service for a home user if needed. If the Bambino fails it's not very user fixable and sending it out for repair generally cost more than residual value. But the big thing is the Classic Pro can grow with you. It has a true 58mm commercial size/weight portafilter. It comes with both a pressurized and non-pressuirzed filter baskets. So you can start out with a not so great or no grinder at all with the pressurized baskets. Then turn your game up with a decent grinder and the non-pressurized basket.

Hi Marc. Just bought the Magenta Prestige from WLL. AWAITING delivery this week! Question. How many grams of coffee are ground at each Flavor/Aroma bean setting? Also does this vary depending on the drink selected? Thank you for your reply.
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Rich, Congrats and thanks for your patronage! Dosing range is approx. 6.5 - 11.5g per grind cycle. So lowest strength gets you 6.5 and highest gets you 11.5. That's approximate as it depends a bit on the beans. Lighter roasts are more dense than darker so a bit more or less depending. No variation in dose weight based on the drink selected. When you first use the machine keep in mind it takes about 5 grind cycles to adjust to your beans. First few drinks are usually a little weak as the machine adjusts. Also, I recommend setting the grinder to its finest setting before adding any beans and setting coffee strength to max. After the first 5 or so brew cycles you can back off grind fineness or strength if needed. Hope that helps and enjoy your new machine! Marc

Hey Andrew, You're welcome! Guessing you're outside of the North America? Through special arrangement with Gaggia our Cadorna Barista Plus in North America has the manual/professional style steam wand. It's a little bit longer than the wand on the Magenta. I like the longer wand for better reach into the pitcher. Panarello wands are good for those who do mostly traditional style airier cappuccino frothing or don't want to learn frothing techniques. They are not good for frothing to super fine microfoam for latte art. If choosing between manual wand and Panarello I'd go with the manual as I appreciate the finer frothing capabilities. It's +25% price of the Magenta and has less modern interface. I prefer the UI of the Magenta. But it may have some other features which appeal to some like adjustable froth density. Marc

@@Wholelattelovepage Hi Marc, I have the DeLonghi Eletta Top for two years now. I have found the interface is confusing and was very impressed with your video and how user friendly it is. Basically I want to know if I will be missing out on anything from the DeLonghi if I buy the Gaggia from you? Thank you very much.

Hi Jaime, User interface on the Magenta is a lot nicer than the Eletta! Your machine does have the adjustable froth density on the carafe control. The Magenta does not. But Magenta does flip milk prep order to be appropriate for the drink made. I know you will find the Magenta much easier to use with the more modern display with color drink pics and names plus the ability to make any adjustments to drink before it's made. After drink finishes you can easily save changes if you want. Hope that helps! Marc

how does the temperature compare with that of Jura E8? Thanks!
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Marina, Thanks for the question. In my experience the Magenta is a little warmer than the E8. Have to be honest I have not done a direct measurement of temperatures out of the E8. But, I have used the E8 and other Jura machines extensively and the Magenta is hotter IMO. Marc

Nice review, I'm interested in this machine. Any idea how much coffee is used in making each espresso? I assume a min - max depending upon strength selected.
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Mark, Thanks for the comment and question. Coffee dose range is 6.5 - 11.5g per brew cycle. So if you choose to make a double espresso range is 13-23g. You are correct dose weight is determined by coffee strength setting. Here's a link to full specs of the Magenta Prestige: www.wholelattelove.com/products/gaggia-magenta-prestige-super-automatic-espresso-machine#product-specs Marc

What is the difference in the texture of the milk frothing - wand version vs the model with container that does it for you?
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 2 жыл бұрын
Hi JW, Thanks for the question. The wand version allows the user to texture their milk any way they want. It takes a little skill/practice to do it, but you can go from traditional cappuccino coarse to super-fine texture capable of pouring latte art. Beyond that you can froth to any temperature desired. Machine which froth for you from attachable carafe split the difference so you'll get a medium fine froth. What helps a lot on the Gaggia Magenta Prestige (w/carafe) is the changing of the frothing order depending on the drink being made. Doing that you get excellent drink quality with proper mouthfeel.

I have had this machine since last week and already I have an issue I'd appreciate hearing whether any others have had. The issue is that my machine doesn't actually rinse through on start up despite the on screen message stating that the routine is in progress. It did do this at first but 2 days after taking it into operation and it has stopped pushing any water through.
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Dan, I passed your comment along to our lead service tech who gave this advice... Assuming there is water in the tank, because the machine would tell you to add water. My next thought would be to make sure the water tank is seated properly. Make sure there is nothing in the water tank holding area that wouldn't allow it to seat all the way down. If the tank is slightly up, it will draw air and not water. If there is a filter in the tank. I would remove it and then test to see if water moves then. A video would be helpful also. Any errors or messages that come up on the screen when it doesn't complete rinse? I'm guessing it's something simple, since it is only a couple of days old.
@dans8129
@dans8129 2 жыл бұрын
@@Wholelattelovepage Thanks for caring firstly :) Secondly, the rinsing is only not happening on start up - I see no water coming out at all. On shutdown, it does rinse, strangely! So rinsing does work, just not always when it should. No error messages come up - rather I get the message that rinsing is taking place and I hear noises that suggest indeed some part of the routine is working. Could it be that on start up the result of the rinse does not come through the nozzles that dispense the coffee but somehow the water finds it's way directly to the tray? I have noticed that the tray always seems to be fuller than I expected it to be. On shutdown water does come out of the coffee dispenser, so it could be a false expectation that the same should happen on start up.
@dans8129
@dans8129 2 жыл бұрын
So actually, the start up rinsing cycle only sends water to the drip tray not through the dispensing nozzles. So, all good!

what is maximum cup capacity per day for this machine?
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 3 жыл бұрын
Hi HA, Thanks for the question. Often when asked this question it's because someone want to use in a commercial application. If that's you, know this machine is intended for home use. In reality no problem making many cups cups per day but it does not have a specific cup per day capacity rating.

Looks very convenient, I had a Phillips LatteGo and returned it because the coffee tasted very flat. Then I went to a Jura and it also lacked body. How does this compare? FWIW I ended up with an ECM Synchronika FC and a Eureka Specialita and will never go back. The small bit of extra work is worth the effort! Thanks for helping me make a decision with all these videos!

Hi David, Thanks for the comment and you are welcome! The Synchronika with FC is a whole other beast compared to automatic machines. With the right coffee, some skills, knowledge and a bit of patience one can extract world class espresso. You nailed it, super-automatics are convenient and consistent. Marc

Hi CC, The Magenta ranges from 6.5 - 11.5g per brew cycle. Selecting 2 coffees to brew automatically runs two grind cycles so dose range for that is 13 - 23g. Marc

How hot is the milk coming out?
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 2 жыл бұрын
Hi JJ, Like all super-automatic machines frothed milk is dispensed in the sweet zone of 130-145F. At those temps milk gains the most apparent sweetness from heating. Same temp range a well trained barista manually froths milk to for best flavor. Frothing hotter reduces sweetness. Marc

I’m torn. Which super automatic Gaggia do I get ?!?
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Sonja, Choices right? Magenta Prestige is very similar to the Gaggia Cadorna Prestige. Slightly higher price on the Cadorna gets you front slide out access to water reservoir, 4 user profiles so you can store 4 versions of each drink, XL versions of some drinks. Internal brew group is the same on both machines and drinks common between the machines brew in the same way so both do Americano, true double shot flat white and flip the milk prep order as needed for drink. Hope that helps! Marc
