Thank you for this informative video. When my niece was in grade school she had to read the Flat Stanley series. Part of the assignment was to mail a printed cut out of Flat Stanley across the world to different friends and relatives and then have the last person on her list mail him back to her. She was then able to see and compare with classmates where their Flat Stanleys traveled to. Pretty fun idea.

I highly recommend the Mandie series by Lois Gladys Leppard. The stories take place in the early 1900s. She is an 11 year old living in North Carolina. She comes from a Christian background and her ancestry is Cherokee, so it has quite a bit of cultural diversity. There are 40 books in the original series and several others that take place when she's older or have other themes (like a cookbook). It is a mystery series. For a stand alone book, I recommend Mandy (ha! I didn't notice until I typed that that the protagonists share a name!) by Julie Andrews Edwards - the actress. It's an incredibly beautiful and imaginative book about an orphan who turns a tiny deserted cottage into her "home". It is similar to the first Boxcar children book in that she puts a lot of work into cleaning and making the cottage a beautiful, functional hideaway. I feel this book is an unknown gem. I've never met anyone else who has read it - but my girls will, when they're old enough :).

I am an elementary school librarian - I would suggest The Penderwicks series by Jeanne Birdsall about 4 sisters. It has the charm of a book written long ago but still manages to be fresh and modern. It’s a bit longer, and the reading level is probably more suited to a nine or ten year old.

Great books! We’re so happy you’re homeschooling and we were praying for all CA Homeschoolers on Tuesday for the big legislative decisions being brought up. So grateful for a good outcome! It inspires us to have a “Drop Everything and Read” day with some great books! I LOVE Grandma's Attic. I'm so glad you introduced it to your girls! We are in book 6 of Boxcar children. It's one of our bedtime reading series we do together. My 8 year old son is loving it! I'm getting my boys into audio stories / audio theater. Focus on the Family does audio theater as does Jonathan Park and Heirloom Audio productions. We live in the country and commute 30 minutes each way to town and school so I'm hoping to have my kids enjoy these stories. Right now I have them listening to The Hiding Place, Corrie Ten Boom's story. It's created in a family appropriate manner. Thank you for your suggestions!

Hello, Jennifer! I never usually comment but love your videos and enjoy watching them from England, where my family and I live. I just have to recommend The Jesus Storybook Bible to you - it is such a captivating version of the Bible for all ages (as an adult I often weep as the story hits me once again). I buy it for and recommend it to anyone I can! My son also loves Flat Stanley and the original Stuart Little story which is written in a very similar style (I think they were both written in America in the 1950s or thereabouts). Also, I just want to let you know that I was so inspired and empowered by your self-publishing story that I decided to go ahead and write and self-publish my first book that I've had in mind for a little while. I've now finished it (It's a short non-fiction book) and am about to have some author friends copy-edit it for me! Thank you for sharing your story! Xxx

Hi 👋, Jennifer! TFS for this list of wholesale 👻 books 📚 for young readers. My children and my grandchildren are all well past that age. However, I always felt good about spending money on books for my kids. My mother who was the teacher gave my oldest son (as a toddler) a copy of “Where the Wild Things Are,” which he loved. Son number two loved it so I bought him his own copy. Sun number three was born 18 years and two days after my first son. Son one was home from college when he caught little brother, a preschooler, “reading” his book. He immediately removes the book, placed it in a high location, and let me know I was to not allow little brother to read his book! So, of course, I bought son three his own copy of this book. I like the book because it causes a child’s imagination soar. 🌿🌷💚

I'm an elementary school teacher and love your recommendations. I love books by Eleanor Estes: The Moffats, Ginger Pye, and other books about this fun family. I could go on and on with suggestions, but am sure that people will chime in with many great recommendations.

The series that I began my reading "career" with, as an 8yo were the "Elizabeth Gail" books by Hilda Stahl. They will probably be really hard to get now, as I read them in the late 70's and early 80's, but they were my first book love. I still have them up until about book 17 or 18. I also loved the Enchanted Forest books by Enid Blyton, and the Famous Five books. I never got into Secret Seven, but I lived the Famous Five. I've since read them to my own children and my students at school, and they've loved them too.

Thank you 😁 My newly 8 year old is flying through chapter books. I'm intimidated at the library because I don't know what will be contained in all of these novels from the past 30 years. She has just started reading Boxcar Children and a few random ones that I remember reading at her age. I've started to look for pre 1960 as much as possible. Thank you for some newer safe/wholesome choices, too! 😁💗

I am a teacher and love your choices. My students and my own children love/loved the Bailey Kids, Ranger in Time, the Little House on the Prarie series and the American Girl books. Wonderful read to books are all the books by E B White. I highly recommend theses as read together books because the language is so beautiful. As the children get older The Secret Garden, A Wrinkle in Time and Island of the Blue Dolphin are wonderful choices. I recommend reading to children especially as they get older, there is so much to gain from this! I read to my 4th and 5th graders everyday.

Fantastic list! My son also loves the A to Z Mysteries and the Calendar Mysteries. We also like to read the classics together: The Phantom Tollbooth, The Wizard of Oz series, My Father's Dragon, etc. Even though I have sons, I do plan on reading The Little House books because I feel like all kids enjoy those books. An author I loved as a kid who I can't wait to introduce to my boys is Eleanor Estes. She wrote The Moffat series and they are so fun.

How fun! I loved Encyclopedia Brown, the Magic Tree House & the Boxcar Kids! If she likes mysteries she may enjoy the Hardy Boys & Nancy Drew as she gets a little older. Amelia Bedelia was also a favorite, and an easier read!! I was boxing up some of my books from childhood at my parents house this weekend & two additional series I had a lot of were the Little House on the Prairie series & the Dear America series. Apparently they continued the Dear America series & it now ranges from 2/3rd grade to high school depending on the book. The books I had were short & fun to read. They're historical fiction books written in diary format. Each follows a young girl through a pivotal point in American history, i.e. The Mayflower, Oregon Trail, Titanic, etc. I'm also a voracious reader, so I definitely cheer for her healthy habit! My absolute favorite book series growing up was Harry Potter, but I grew up with that series as the first book came out when I was 11 & the last book came out when I was in college. As for your youngest daughter, my entire family loved the Berenstain Bears series!

I used to love the Mrs. Piggle Wiggle books! The Secret Garden was one of my favorites, it's a bit longer than many of these but not too difficult a read I think. The boxcar children reminds me of another book I enjoyed, The Five Little Peppers and How They Grew, about a poor widow and her 5 children. If your little girl likes mysteries, I'm reading the Nancy Clancy books (of Fancy Nancy fame) to my 4 year old right now, but it is geared more to 7-8 year old's.

Hi Jennifer! I'm not a mother, and I'm not quite sure what constitutes as wholesome, but as a twenty-something with fond childhood memories of books I hope my recommendations can still come in handy. In Sweden we have a very popular children's books author named Astrid Lindgren. Although most of her books are written during the later half of the 20th century they're still very popular today. There's quite a few with various genres, I really recommend looking into her work as I'm sure there's something for everyone, although most of them might be more suitable for a bit older readers now that I think about it. Since your daughter likes mysteries perhaps she'd like the trilogy about the detective Bill Bergson. Personally I'd recommend the fantasy/adventure book The Brothers Lionheart.

Growing up with the Nancy Drews series, it's amazing to see so many mystery series for young children offered these days and what a nice routine you have with your children before bedtime. The Betsy Books by Carolyn Haywood were my favorites as a child, as were the Bobbsey Twins. My children love the Happy Hollisters, and (for when yours are older), the Cooper Kids mysteries by Frank Paretti. Also chiming in with my love for the Jesus Storybook Bible. The Henry Reed books and Centerburg Tales are other household favorites.

My girls loved the Magic By The Lake books by Edward Eager (I read these growing up). I see others have recommended the Happy Hollisters (my favorite growing up as well) and The Borrowers, The Chronicles of Narnia (kind of scary at points, we read them aloud and then they read them on their own when they were older), Little House on the Prairie were my favorites growing up although my girls never really connected which bummed me out. Magic Treehouse of course were also favorites.. It gets harder as voracious readers grow because they want to read beyond their age level and those so often are not appropriate...I also grew up with the All of a Kind Family books and my kids STILL talk about them. oh, and the Beverly Cleary books... Henry Huggins, Ramona the Pest, Ramona and Beezus...maybe to read aloud, and they (and you) will get a kick out of Mrs. Piggle Wiggle...really cute books that actually emphasize manners!

Jennifer, you are a girl after my own heart! Great book recommendations. There’s one extremely special series my youngest daughter loved called The Moody Family series which is all about a homeschool family. It’s a real life example of the way a Christian family can operate - schooling, chores, habits of Bible reading every morning, family Bible time every night, siblings treating each other well, ministering to others together. It’s so special and encouraged me, as well as my daughter. These make great read aloud books as they promote great discussions. The author is Sarah Moody and her family has a wonderful ministry at Titus2.com. Also, I was sooo thrilled you discovered Lamplighter books. Have you listened to any of their CDs? They are incredibly special. They are so very YOU! I must take some pictures and tag you on Instagram with some of my best recommendations. Are you familiar with the Sonlight curriculum? If I had it to do all over again, I would use it for literature and history. It’s just a whole bunch of books. The book guides are great and promote a Christian worldview. I just wish I had known about it when my girls were small.
