The Two Dollar Bill Documentary

The Two Dollar Bill Documentary

Күн бұрын

How did the 2 dollar bill become so uncommon in our culture? What led to the bill being looked at as a novelty or collector's item? The director of The Two Dollar Bill Documentary looks at the bill's evolution, and what happened when it was re-issued for the nation's Bicentennial in 1976. It all makes perfect sense now!

What I’d really like to see is a decently designed $1 coin that everyone can get onboard with. That way, the $2 bill would be the smallest note in circulation and would become more commonly used. At least, that’s my theory… and I’m sticking to it! 😬

I remember $2 bills mainly as "bait" used by convenience stores, taxi drivers and pizza delivery drivers. Often used on "clip alarms,", a device that fit in the drawer where the alarm was tripped when two, two dollar bills were removed. The theory was the $2.00 bills were odd enough they would be known not to use or after a robbery police would take note.

Good question. The government actually DOES advocate people to use twos because they save money on printing if more people would use them. It's just that people don't. Good possible question for a future video though.

@@TheTwoDollarBillDocumentary Trust ME! I am doing my part in Texas, it's the banks I have accounts with, that have an issue, or can't hold them for me, or call me to tell me they have $2.00 bills available.. I'd make a special trip to purchase them, and spend the $2.00's! I might need enough $2.00 bills to get my car repaired.. Approx about $1,600.00 or so in trans-axel, and air conditioning repairs, driver side door hinge, weather strip repairs... I also might need about $5,000.00 for a new / used engine.. for my 1982 Ford Granada.. :"( I have serious needs, heck, to have a small cooler full of $2.00 bills, to pay for day to day expenses, food, bread, chips, cheese, salsa. Ritz crackers, ect... paying nothing but $2.00 bills in Texas.. :D But... I'm going on faith, and prayer to G-d / Hashem for a serious break in my financial woes, lonely single Jewish women, wanting a boytoy, lover to spoil rotten as her security guard? :)

The Two Dollar Bill Documentary yes great question, another could be why you get the looks from cashiers when trying to use them. With the dreaded marker to test counterfeiting, then they mark it again damaging more ! I think the treasury should run some commercials to promote its use and educate the younger generation.

These are all great comments - thanks everyone. The looks from cashiers will continue until those cashiers understand that the $2 is normal currency. If $2s start getting used more, cashiers can adjust their registers accordingly. I doubt they'll ever get rid of $1s, but they should stop making them, as there are already over 11 billion out there. let them slowly fizzle out.

We've been collecting a lot of hidden camera reactions over the last month, and it should be our next video on May 23. We have a video on our channel already about vending machines, but it's more of an explainer than actually going around testing machines. We do have a video planned where we test them in ATMs. And finally, we do have one sort-of reaction video, where we spent $2s at fast food places. It's conversational, not just reactions: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jbpiaNuSvrLIn30.html

While I was supervising the intake area of a county jail in NJ a few years ago, there was always a disproportionate amount of 2 Dollar bills in the possession of incoming inmates that had to be logged with the rest of their money and property. I couldn't figure out why so i asked an inmate who had some who possessed a few when he was getting booked. He explained that the local adult bar "gave them out as change all the time". He further explained that the twos were then used as tips for the dancers and at the bar which effectively doubled their tips as there were more two's than one's circulating in the establishment.

As merchant, I TRIED giving One-Dollar coins and Two-Dollar Bills as change -- for about 2 years. But there were just too many negative reactions. It got to the point that we had to ASK customers if they would be willing to have dollar coins or two dollars bills back. More than 60 percent of people simily didn't WANT them. A big part of it was that many people felt obligated to KEEP them as collectible rather than to use them as real money for spending. So, if it was their last few dollars, they didn't want them as they needed 'Real Money' that they could spend.

Just stop making them, and replace old one with coins. Prior to the Information Age, a dollar bill would be lucky to last 4 years, with 18mons lifespan being common. Coins would last 30 years. However, nowadays, with most transactions being electronic, $1 bills easily make it to 4 years, and conceivably, coins could last indefinitely. She was looking for something different she said....I have received a bank sealed package every year on my birthday now for twenty nine years. My mother took up the cause after my grandmother passed away.and has purchased a sealed pack at Wells Fargo every year up until 2020 when for the first time she was unable to get them unopened so she was forced to buy just a circulated bunch I have never found any other people with any interest in these bills until today when I happened across this thread I have always wondered if there is any value to my collection other then the face value of $200.00 a bundle?? I love to pull them out of my safe and show friends they are truly beautiful notes...

I use twos when I get them as a cashier, I give them back out as change and yeah it puts a smile on peoples face, or they think they're fake... But I've only kept two twos, a Series 2013 for my full set of uncirculated current style currency (I believe they will change the bills in the relative near future) and a Series 1976 to complete my full set of Bicentennial coins and bills, Got the Penny, Nickel, Dime, Commemorative Quarter/Half/Dollar coins and the only bill to be stamped as a Series 1976, the $2... The Bicentennial Coin/Bill set in my opinion is a great start for someone looking to start collecting sets, six coins, and one bill, four coins easy to get, the other two and the bill a little more scarce but still common enough...

Was the $2 ever issued as a Silver Certificate Bill ?
@terryholloway3241
@terryholloway3241 5 жыл бұрын
From what I read back in the 70's, the Treasury wanted to save money from making the highly used $1 bills. So they decided to start printing a $2 bill to replace the $1 bill and in the $1 bill's place, they would make a $1 coin, just slightly larger than a Quarter. So to avoid people from confusing the $1 coin from the Quarter, they colored it gold and put the Indian maiden, Sacajawea on it. Needless to say, that idea went over like a led balloon. Everyone hated the new coin. Vending machines couldn't take them. No one wanted to use them or the $2 bill. To this day, you have people either hording them or businesses not wanting to deal with them.
@TheTwoDollarBillDocumentary
@TheTwoDollarBillDocumentary 5 жыл бұрын
The dollar coin came in a little later than you suggested. In the 70s, the idea was that by printing more $2 bills, the government could save money, since you could get twice as much money made with half the paper. It was never intended that the $1 bill would be replaced - they just wanted to print less of them. It didn't work. Then later on they went the $1 coin route as you said, and it failed. The most one dollar coins I've ever seen in one place is in a mobile app for iPhones called The Container. You have to guess how many of something is in a container, and on one of the early levels, they filled a giant pot with dollar coins. Worth a look - it was around 2500 of them. Anyway, thanks for the comment!

@@TheTwoDollarBillDocumentary Sorry, I meant the 80's, but the reasoning was the same. The $1 bill is the most used paper and the Government wanted to save money by creating a $1 coin. From what I read, they DID want to replace the $1 bill for the dollar coin, but it was a colossal failure.

I grew up through this period and was once in retail in the 70's and later in banking in the 80's. There was ANOTHER REASON the $2 (which I loved to see) failed in retail (and Banking). Cash registers and Teller drawers had bills slots for $1-5-10-20's and 'Large'. In retail Checks went under the tray. There was no place for the $2 to go, 5 slots is all there were. in both retail and banking it was important to keep the denominations separate. Putting 'Large' under the tray was a recipe for loss and in addition we were trained, in both retail and esp. banking, to keep all bills aligned properly. I think this was a contributing reason the $2 failed. The gov't should have stopped making the $1 when dollar coins came back -but that was almost as sacrosanct as the proposal to eliminate the Penny...

@TheTwoDollarBillDocumentary 5 жыл бұрын
In this video on our channel, we show how it's up to the cashier. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nJ1mqtB1tr2-e6M.html But if you were trained a certain way, then the $2 was in fact out. The register slots were a factor for sure, but it certainly could have been overcome if people just used the bill. Thanks for the comment.

@@TheTwoDollarBillDocumentary Oh the tellers 'say' they will order some, and I'm back to work for 4 nights of 12-16 hour shift due to mandatory overtime.. 1st Convenience Bank out of Killeen, TX has branches in my area, yet many don't actually order some for me, but mostly military so it's a serious hit or miss.. by the way If G-d / Hashem forgave me, of my sins, and destroyed this financial curse on my life, to have a 7 to 12 figure income of millions in my accounts, to be respected by the banks I deal with, it wouldn't be an issue. I work for the prison, and take home only after 15 years of service $3,500 a month, and about $2,500 take home, and take out mortgage costs, I have $1,800 to spend on bills.. Compared to Military Soldiers, and Federal Government employees that get way more respect than a low paid prison guard.. Banks in Central Texas just either ignore me, or just blow me off.... So, I travel up to 400 miles in other towns to find banks I don't have accounts with if they sell what they got.. Yet... I ask you to please pray for me to find a higher paying more suitable security job, with better benefits, pay scale, I can qualify for, to help pump the $2.00 bills into main stream circulation.. Heck, I just stopped at Starbucks in Stephenville, paid my coffee with a $2.00 bill and a $1.00 and put another $2.00 bill in the tip jar.. But... my FWD transaxel transmission shut down on my 1990 Buick LeSabre, and broke down, in front of a guy's house to beg for a jump start, I limped home... So.... I asked the 1st Convenience Bank in Stephenville for $2.00 bills and they had none... Good thing, I am lonely, single, and no love life.. lol no wife and no kids... Struggling... like everyone else. :'( Thank you for responding... Yet... It would be sweet, if I had a job paying me $6,500 a month, spending nothing but $2.00 bills, like a stable job with retirement, till I turned 70... I'm 46... 6 feet.. single. Travel to towns in Texas, spending $2.00 bills on gas, food, motel stay, auto repairs, having so many $2.00 bills to get my trans-axel FWD repaired-replaced... Day to day stuff, reload my Debit Cards with $2.00 bills, shopping at Wal-Mart, and H.E.B. spending NOTHING but $2.00.. heheh perhaps some wealthy Jewish sugar mama, that wants a boyfriend to spoil, gives my pay allowance in nothing buy $2.00 bills... Seeing the reaction on people's faces, as I use nothing BUT $2.00 bills.. :D A good reliable car... restoring my 1982 Ford Granada with a used engine, or new old style engine, transmission, rack-n-pinion, front brake overhauled repairs being paid but nothing but $2.00 bills... (I'm VERY DEAD Serious about spending $2.00 bills and circulating them into cash registers ALL OVER Texas... (ASSUMING THEY ARE NOT, the Red Seal $2.00 bills) :) I'm keeping those! lol But that's OK.. I'd like to work for a bank that pays more than a prison guard for a long term job..(Till 2035) TDCJ is Ranked #47 in base pay, high stress, high turnover, and mandatory overtime..

I love two dollar bills. I use them and gold dollar coins for tipping all the time. About twenty five years ago when my niece graduated high school she said all she wanted was a car. Well I couldn't afford to get her a car but I got fifty brand new $2.00 bills and cut the side out of a refrigerator box in the shape of a car. Spray painted it green, took yellow construction paper and cut it out in the the shapes of the windows and glued them on to the car. I took 25 of the $2.00 bills and famed them out into complete circle to make each tire. In this way she got her car. I took the car and put it into a giant white envelope I had made out of new butcher paper I got from a local grocery store. Addressed it to my niece Amy ________ and even drew a stamp of Fred Flinstone sitting in car for postage. Took it to her house and leaned it up against the front door and rang the bell. Needless to it was one of the hits of her party. It was on display for ten or more years with the two's still on it. She still has it to this day having removed the two's. I don't know if she still has them or saved them, but she has never forgotten that I got her a car for her graduation! And that's a $2.00 bill story you will have a hard time topping. I have pictures of it hanging on the wall at her party but probably can't find them now, but she was a pretty special niece to me as my sister raised her herself and so I babysat her a lot and grow up into the lady that she is today! Love the $2.00 bill and always will,
